Cooler is better . Few products provoke as much consternation as external hard drives, and since I've previously been a victim of Iomega products (remember the Jazz drives?), I'd sworn off the brand. But a special offer, and a stylistic match with the Mac Air, made this one hard to resist.
It's about the size of a wallet and comes with a claim that it can be dropped five feet without damage. I'm counting on the drive's not provoking me to test its claim.
So far I can attest that Helium is lighter than Air, that the device sets up immediately and intuitively with Time Machine, and that it has a well-positioned, small blue light that blinks for the amount of time required to back up your computer (about 5 minutes--not bad). Finally, it appears to draw more than sufficient power from the USB port. Power adapter unnecessary (though with the lone USB port of the Air, a wireless storage drive would rule).
I continue to be especially impressed by this drive. It eagerly appears on my desktop with startling regularity and speed, it appears to have no moving parts inside, it runs cool and silent, and thank goodness it's an overachieving mighty mite because there isn't even any provision for an AC connection. No Firewire 400 or 800, but the drive's power and efficiency make the Mac Air look all the better for their absence. Finally, it pretty much makes good on Apple's hype about Snow Leopard being an 80% stronger animal than Leopard. Let's face it: cooler is better.
6/30/11: I continue to get unfailing service from this drive, which came out before the 2nd (current) generation of Mac Air computers. It doesn't have "eGO" inscribed on the top of the device (just as the accompanying pictures are devoid of the label), it uses a thin and supple cable (as opposed to the thick transparent one of its successor) and, unlike its "eGo" successor, it operates efficiently with a single USB plug (the newer one employs 2 plugs). Finally, the back sticker states that the place of manufacture is Korea (the newer, current model lists China as the place of manufacture).

eGo Helium is perfect for a compact hard drive . Although it is a 320 GB, am using it as an immediate and handy storage device. With an rpm of 5400, it is a fairly good speed. Plugging it to Macbook Air, it is compact and stylish choice for an external hard drive. The best thing I liked about Helium is the dropguard feature - kinda shock resistant upto 5 feet. It is really a good thing that the manufacturers have thought about. Such features are generally not paid much attention. Backup is also trustworthy because of the Quickprotect. Since it supports PC also, I am able to take it to my office and use it to transfer data when I have to travel or while working from my home. I liked the comfort of use and its silver sheen.

Excellent little drive! . Really pleased with this drive. I bought it to store my music, photos, and other media as my laptop was getting pretty full with these file types. This drive worked perfectly out of the box, and has continued to do so (albeit for only a month or so) with no hint of issues or problems. Very good product - would recommend it without reservation.
Great Little Drive . This Iomega eGo Helium drive is sweeeeeet!!! Set up was no problem, as I am a "Mac" person and my iMac recognized it immediately. My initial backup was completed in no time at all. This drive is fast and very quiet. It will be used exclusively for Time Machine backups.
It is true . Initially I thought the claim of fallguard may not be a reality but I experienced it. Only when it slipped off my hands when multitasking a sip of a drink and setting up my desktop to accommodate a few things. I thought it was dead and whatever has been stored are all damaged. To my surprise the drive not only worked, it had all data intact. I hope it doesn't suffer another fall!
Cons Review
Died in 11 months exactly. . I used this drive for my regular monthly backups. I write about 300 GB of data and then place it on a shelf in an air conditioned house.
I will never purchase anything made by iomega again. Stay away from Samsung hard drives, because that's what they used in this model.
They now join Maxtor/Western Digital/G Tech as companies I will never purchase storage from again.
I have a Seagate external drive that I have also been using for those same monthly backups and it is over 5 years old and still going strong.
