Decent product photos are WRONG WRONG WRONG . I am a loyal customer of Amazon.com, so I am sorry to have to say that they have some work to do when it comes to the accuracy of the photos and descriptions for electronic and computer related merchandise.
The "Best Connectivity SD-U2DEL-525 USB 2.0 5.25-Inch External Enclosure" being sold here doesn't look at all like the photos provided by Amazon.com. The photos show a metallic case, with two different external ports and two cables (presumably USB & firewire) What I received is very different. I am posting photos of what I received.
All the listed product features are correct. The enclosure is USB 2.0 only. I believe that the photos by Amazon.com are for the firewire/IEEE1394-version of this product. The actual housing I received is entirely made of plastic (not aluminum as is indicated on the carton in one of the photos.) And it's actually two-tone grey, not black, red, blue, etc.) It only comes with one USB cable and there is only one USB port on the rear. The enclosure has square corners on all sides. And it comes with a plastic stand/holder not shown in the photo. It doesn't have "Versa-drive" printed on the side of the enclosure, there is nothing printed on the enclosure at all.
Not long ago Newegg was selling an enclosure with the name "Syba SD-U2DEL-525" at a very similar price, and the description and photos on Newegg better described what I received from Amazon.com.
Having said all that, given that the enclosure provides the functionality I need, and considering the price I paid I am satisfied.
The documentation included in the package is very limited. The assembly instructions are a set of illustrations printed on the outside of the box. A mini CD was included with the drivers. But I had no trouble assembling a 5.25 inch LG IDE DVD R/RW drive into the enclosure. The case snaps together and the only tool that was required was a small flat blade screwdriver to pry the connector for the front LED panel loose. Pretty much any small flat blade would work just as well. And Windows XP recognized the drive and installed the driver automatically - I did not have to use the disc. I haven't tried it with Win7 or Vista yet - I'll update the review when I do.
