This review is from : AmazonBasics 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (Gray Blue)
Decent flash drive . I was somewhat hesitant purchasing this drive, as there were no reviews yet. I was mostly interested in read/write speeds, as they weren't shown on the information page (or perhaps I missed it). For the 8 GB model, 7.53 GB are accessible, and the drive comes formatted in FAT32. I tried a few read/write tests, with digital camera RAW files. Copying around 7 GB resulted in a sustained write speed of 5.6 MB/sec, and sustained read speeds of the same files was around 28.6 MB/sec. I was impressed by the read speeds, but slightly disappointed in the write speeds. Granted I won't often be filling the drive up (which would take about 20 minutes), so it won't be too big of an issue, and for most data transfers I would not have benefited from any additional write speed.Build quality is fairly impressive, as it's made mostly out of aluminum. It feels solid in my hands, and looks to be fairly durable. The ends are plastic though, but I don't think that matters much.I feel it would be useful to have a key-chain loop included on it, in case you would want to easily have it with you at all times.Overall, it's a solid flash drive for the money, and you probably won't be disappointed.

Speedy for The Price: 40X Write 100x Read. . Pretty zippy for an inexpensive memory stick. Real solid feel. No annoying LED blinking while writing or reading. Does have a removable cap that will probably get lost. Lanyard hole on end.Speed test:Writing speed: 7.88 MByte/s
Reading speed: 17.7 MByte/s
AmazonBasics 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (Gray Blue) Opinions
Works fine sturdy and well designed . This is a sturdy little data key and was attractively designed. Its cap fits snugly enough not to come off accidentally and protects the plug-in contact end. I have used it several times to backup vital data from my hard drive, and it has worked quickly and flawlessly. also, very handy to have to carry your computer files with you, either for safe keeping or for working on them at other computers while on the road. I plan on buying a larger capacity key in the near future. Highly recommended.
Good Value . I've gotten some AmazonBasics products before and have always been satisfied and this Flash Drive is no different. Its a 4GB flash drive for $10. Pretty good value there. The drive's construction seems sturdy so far. No problems with file transfers or holding data. There's not much to say other than this AmazonBasics flash drive does what it is supposed to do. The price point is right for what it is. Another good AmazonBasics product.
Solid great looking with above average performance . I like the feel of the metal. The cap snaps on nice and tight. The usb plug is probably as vulnerable as the ones on plastic drives. Write speeds are about average at 7.5 MB/Sec. Read speeds are much better, averaging 18 MB/sec on large files. One year warranty from Amazon. That's a good thing, as Amazon has about the best customer service on the net. You won't have to speak Chinese to do a return or exchange. Overall, a good choice, for what has become a generic product, even from the name brand companies. At least for usb 2.0 drives.
Covers the "Basics" . This USB flash drive fits well in the category of "Amazon Basics" as they are at the point of being "generic" now.Amazon's entry is strictly no-frills: 4-Gig when much larger are common now, and no access light when drugstore models often have such.Frills aside, the unit seems solidly built, and the case fits together firmly, both in "cap over usb" and "cap on end" mode. I checked performance on FreeBSD, Linux and Windows-XP, and the device was seen with no problem on all systems, and read and wrote without error.I also tried it on several old laptops, and can confirm that it works (more slowly, of course) on USB 1.0 systems.
Nifty Little Thumb Drive . Nice little drive, especially if you just plan to use it for daily backups or transfers from one computer to another in your house or workplace. The gray aluminum housing makes it sort of cute too - compared to other drives. The removable cap can be placed on the outside end of the drive for storage when the drive is plugged in; minimizing the chance of losing it. Very sturdy and well made and seems to zip along when files are copied to it. I say seems to, because unlike most thumb drives I've used in the past, this one has no lights to indicate whether the drive is being written to--I ended up opening the drive contents from My Computer to insure that what I wanted on the drive was actually there. The other downside is there is no way to attach this to a key chain, at least not that I can see. For me, just dropping it into a pocket, briefcase or purse is not the way to transport a thumb drive from one location to another. But hey, that's just me - I'm used to carrying my drives along with my keys - it insures I don't forget it.All in all, for the price, a great little thumb drive to have around. It works for what I need it for - backing up my accounts and my fiction. But, I never expected anything less from an Amazon Basics item and this one does not let me down.
Problem free in a nice metal casing. . This is my fourth flash drive. All of them were fast and trouble free. I use Lenovo Thinkpads, running Windows XP and now Windows 7.The biggest differences are in the construction.I have a PNY Attaché flash drive (16 GB) that has no cap. Instead, the cover slides back. The selling point is that there's no cap to lose. I don't like this "feature" because, since there's no cap, the USB end is always exposed. (Though that's not caused any problems so far.)My HP flash drive (4 GB) has a cap. I prefer that. Both of these flash drives are plastic. That's not been a problem, though I suppose they'd break more easily. This Amazon flash drive (4 GB) has a metal body and cap. It feels very solid. The cap feels more securely attached than does the HP's cap (though I've not had problems with the HP's cap falling off). All of these flash drives have a small hole at one end, to loop a string, wire, or keychain through it for easy carrying. The PNY's hole is the widest. The hole on the HP and Amazon flash drives look too small for some keychains. The Amazon has the best construction due to its sturdy metal body; the one that can take the most punishment.
its a flash drive . it does exactly what you expect a flash drive to do, fits perfectly into all usb ports on my computer, its as if they were made for each other. when not plugged into my computer it doesn't do much tho, it just kinda sits there
Basic functionality . This is a basic thumb drive memory stick. Performance is about average. It is the old-fashioned, non-retractable type (which I prefer, actually) which means that you should try to hang on to the cap. My experience with the new retractables is that they can collapse annoyingly when you try to plug them in from a distance. These old kind are more sure footed, but to each his own.

This review is from : ioSafe SoloPRO 2 TB USB 3.0 Fireproof and Waterproof External Hard Drive with 1 Year Data Recovery Service - Black (SJ2000GB1YR)
Excellent Product! Excellent Customer Service! . After I recently lost the last 5 to 7 years of my life's data (financials, tax info, travel pics, etc.) to an unfortunate laptop HD crash, I decided it might be time to think about having a back up of everything in a remote location that I knew was solid, safe and most of all, protected.

After looking around the internet and reading a few reviews I came across the ioSafe brand and started doing some cross reference checking. I never like to take one sites' word on anything, who knows who is paying the bills, so I always try to read from multiple sources before I buy. The ioSafe brand has a few online reviews, and the biggest knock against them seems to be price. I am not sure about you but for me to know that I have a quality unit in the first place is worth it in the long run. Quality hurts the pocket book once, where quantity hurts again and again.

Having sedated my OCD like need to research I pulled the trigger and ordered up the 2TB USB 3.0 HD with the intent of backing up everything in our house (4 laptops - 2 personal and 2 work) and build a one source video library.

The ioSafe 2TB showed up on the doorstep in a big box proclaiming exactly what it was on the outside. :-( I would prefer to see it shipped in a plain jane box, but luckily I don't live in a bad area and no one was the wiser as to my new purchase. I grabbed it greedily off the porch and was surprised at two things. 1) it was smaller than I expected and seemed rather dense. 15 something pounds is 15 something pounds, until you can hold it all in one hand, then it seems heavier for some reason. 2) The exterior corner of the box was crushed and I just knew this was going to be a problem.

Went inside and opened the box to find that the drive was perfectly suspended in a high density foam chamber away from all sides and corners of the box, so while the packaging was crushed, the unit was untouched and in perfect condition. Yay!

The instructions are super easy to follow and since my laptop is running Win 7, I literally just had to plug the unit in, plug in the USB 3.0 cable, click okay/accept a couple of times and it self installed on my laptop in about 2-3 minutes. Bonus!! No extra hassles, no software downloads, no running three discs to pre-load software that you have to manipulate, it did it all itself. (Skynet? What??)

Having successfully installed the drive I was now ready to do some transfering of files to free up some space and create a back up of my new laptop drive.

The USB 3.0 is very fast transferring files and the HD runs with a very soft whirl of the cool fan. Unless the room is totally crypt silent, you can't even tell that it's running. No noisy spinning drives, no constant hum or whir of a unit you are unsure of whether it is about to give up the ghost soon or not, this unit is just a solid piece of hardware that will treat you right.

I have been running the unit for about 10 days now, moving files up and down to and from it the unit as our video library is taking shape and there have been no problems with my loading a movie onto the HD and my wife plugging in her completely different laptop and uploading it for viewing. No proprietary issues, no problems even though two laptops run other than Win 7 software (my work laptop runs XP and I don't know about her work laptop). Everything has performed as advertised (though I haven't tested the underwater or in a fire options and hope to never have too). LOL

After a few days of owning the unit I got an e-mail from the president of the company. While it would be easy in this day and age to have a boiler plate, blah, blah, blah e-mail automatically generated saying "Thanks for buying" hit your inbox, this one actually had some research done before hitting send. There were questions about my installation, questions about my application, questions about if there was something that I would like to see in a future or upgraded model, but there was also information saying 'I noticed you purchased from Amazon, how did you hear of us and did you choose Amazon because?" sorts of things. It made me feel that while this is a company, they are still interested in their customer's needs and are customer service oriented.

When I responded with a couple of ideas and a couple of questions, not only did the President of the company e-mail me back with answers, for the ones he did not have (concerning using it as a video server through my wireless network and/or outputing directly to my TV, he copied one of the tech savvy customer service folks who addressed my questions with helpful and detailed answers the same day!! That is excellent customer service in this day and age in my eyes, so I have no problems writing a positive review of both the product and the company.

Yes. This product is a bit more expensive than other's out there, but from construction, to operation, to performance and company customer service, I would have no problem purchasing another one should I ever fill up 2TB (1.82TB of usuable space) with all our electronic media.

Highly recommended if you are in the market for a serious, hardcore back up for all your digital needs.
ioSafe SoloPRO 2 TB USB 3.0 Fireproof and Waterproof External Hard Drive with 1 Year Data Recovery Service - Black (SJ2000GB1YR) Reviews
Quiet and works with Linux . Works on both my Linux and Mac PCs no problem. Seems very well built, solid. Doesn't make much noise on the desktop. Drive access speed seems to be relatively quick.
ioSafe SoloPRO 2 TB USB 3.0 Fireproof and Waterproof External Hard Drive with 1 Year Data Recovery Service - Black (SJ2000GB1YR) Opinions
Not tested by fire but installs and functions just like any other external hard drive . Packaged and delivered in mint condition. Installed as easily as any other typical external hard drive. Registration was painless and quick. Installed drive unit, registered online, and setup server backup in less than fifteen minutes. As a small business owner responsible for very sensitive client data, the ioSafe Fireproof and Waterproof External Hard Drive is a simple and money-saving solution for disaster recovery without having to worry about access, security, and costs of a cloud solution.I liked the drive so much that I intend to purchase a second drive for backing up my home data (pictures, videos, etc...)!
Fast and reliable . I'm actually using this connected to a Linux (CentOS 6) server via USB 3 and it's been fast and definitely the best bang-for-the-buck as far as mass protected storage. With a large amount of data using cloud services isn't as feasible as a locally-attached drive that can quickly and safely store large amounts of data.

I've been thrilled with this so far and would recommend them.

My only wish was that these came in a dual-drive (RAID) and/or NAS options so it could be a standalone device.

This review is from : SanDisk 2GB 2 GB Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drive
VERY SMALL EXCELLENT USB DRIVE . I have the 512 MB version of this drive with the hard plastic case and love the small size and performance so I was very excited to get one with four times the space. I really like the removable skins. The cap fits tighter and more secure than the hard plastic one on 512 MB one. Being able to change the color is great because I have many of these and I can tell them apart. I use these drives to backup and transfer many smaller size files (100kb to 200kb). One dirty little secret about these drives is that the larger the capacity the slower they transfer files especially if you are moving many small files. My 512 MB one will write at a rate of 3 MB per second, the 2 GB one at 1 MB per second. This is why I gave it a 4 stars instead of 5. If I would have known about the speed issue I would have bought the 1 GB version instead. If you need speed look at the new SanDisk Cruzer Titanium, they are supposable much faster.
SanDisk 2GB 2 GB Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drive Reviews
Little is fantastic! . I've never gone for small before (I lose things), or decorative (seemed frivolous), or anything less than 4gb (too much hassle selecting out all the files you actually need that evening because the entire folder won't fit on your USB stick). But when I happened upon this stick in a store (actually the 1GB version), I took one look at the colored skins and thought "Now THAT would be handy. Maybe when I lend this stick to someone else, I'll get it back." And besides, it was super cheap.

Now that I've actually used it, I am amazed. The skins do their job: you get three colors (counting the white one), making it easy to keep track of which stick is which. There's a label for your name and phone number, the kind of AHA! extra that makes you wonder why nobody thought it years ago. Same goes for the blazingly bright light at the tip (much easier to see than the light on the computer drive) that lets you know when the stick is in use.

But the pièce de résistance is its size: it actually FITS in the awkwardly-angled, horribly positioned USB port on the front of my computer. It's the first USB stick I've ever had that doesn't require me to crawl around on the floor in the dark behind the computer (or conduct UN-level negotiations with my USB hub and the computer to come to some sort of understanding) to get access to the files on the stick.

And I don't have to worry about losing it: it comes with a ring to attach it to a keychain, and a lanyard for those who prefer to wear it around the neck.

I am extremely happy. If I don't experience any of the durability issues others have had, I'm going to buy an entire set. Bye-bye long, elegant, professional-looking USB sticks! You've been replaced.

Cons Review
Quality is poor . I bought it at Best Buy on 03/22/2006 and it did not work after about 30 minutes. I returned it to Best Buy and got a new one.
On 09/28/2006 it did not work. I called SanDisk and sent it to SanDisk for a replacement. Today is 11/01/2006 I still have not received the replacement from SanDisk.

Very nice product . I like it very much. It looks strong and durable. The only thing I would change is that the drive should be on the other part of the pen so you could put it on the computer as you use the other half as the pointer on a presentation. Anyway I'm pretty happy with this product

This review is from : Kingston DataTraveler 102 - 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DT102/16GB
Great Product . I have other Kingston travel USB drives. I love their product.
The only thing I would say is the drive is a little thick, so
if you have a computer with very closely usb drive inputs, you can't put
another USB drive next to it. It takes up too much room.
Kingston DataTraveler 102 - 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DT102/16GB Reviews
Great Flash Drive Product. . Pros:
Good Read/Write speeds for typical users (R:10MBps, W:5MBps based on its specs). Test Result will be uploaded as customer image(s) soon.
Smaller size than DataTraveler (not 102 series)
Plug-and-Play

Cons:
can't attach the cap to the other end of the drive
Thicker than DataTraveler (not 102 series)

Kingston DataTraveler 102 - 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DT102/16GB Opinions
Don't lose your cap . Pretty straight forward. Throughput seems to be pretty quick. I wish the cap would snap onto the back like a magic marker. I mean, if people designing markers that you can buy a ten pack of at the dollar tree have enough intelligence to include that feature, why wouldn't this have that. It really isn't that big of a deal, but when you pay good money for anything, intelligent and ergonomic design shouldn't take a back seat.
A good drive but needs some modifications . First, other reviewers are exactly right about the cap. It is very difficult to remove. Also, not being able to clip the cap to the other end of the USB drive is a real pain. Someone dropped the ball on that one.

However, two helpful hints in removing the cap. First, I took a nail file and gently filed down the raised edges that allow the cap to clip onto the body of the USB drive. be careful not to remove too much else you'll never get the cap to stay on. I think it is better for it to be too tight than too loose.

Also, the clips are on the longer portion of the cap, so if you hold the cap by the shorter sides of the cap, it comes off a lot easier. If you are holding on the broad side of the cap, you inadvertently press down pushing the raised edges even more firmly into the indentation which allows the cap to clip on making it more difficult to remove the cap.

I am testing this drive's read and write speeds and they are generally OK. It has an average read speed of 23 MB/s and a write speed of 13 MB/s under ideal conditions.

The body of this drive is a little large (it is a 32 GB after all) and it might not play nice when trying to plug it in immediately adjacent to other USB cables. I am downloading Ubuntu USB install/distro and will leave a followup review at some point to let you guys know how well that worked out using this drive.

Good Design / Poor Design . How can something so small be so good yet so frustrating at the same time.

I buy a lot of these types of drives, and hate when the designers get too clever for their own good. (mainly in other models)

I have other drives that incorporate that "slider bar" concept, that cause the USB connection piece to peek in an out. That sucks, and is poor design. Don't do that.

It always invariable creates either a questionable connection, and is too "floppy" in tight spots. In tight spots behind the computer, it's the equivilant of how George Burns used to describe making love in his 90's. "Like shooting pool with a rope", Stay away from slider bar drives.

This Kingston drive has solid and steady connection piece, and the 32GB is really great and at the high end of the current technology.
However, they put a big plastic cap over, it, which was so hard to get off, I ended up pulling the bottom plastic piece off instead. Poor design. No need to make it so tight. Really, there's no need for a cap at all, unless you're throwing this thing in your purse or pocket, and it happens to have cookie crumbs or something that will get in there.

What's up with that?

The drive itself is awesome, and easy to insert and remove, with assurance that a good connection is made.

Cons Review
High capacity low quality . I've bought Kingston USB drives exclusively for years, but this is probably my last one. I actually got 3 of them on sale (non-Amazon site) and it's a good thing they were cheap and I got more than one, for the first one suffered physical failure within a week. As another user posted, the cap is hard to remove and the clear plastic case came off far too easily. The drive fails to mount half the time I insert it; must pull it out and put it back in and only then will the PC/Mac (I use it on both) will see it. And the USB plug started "drooping" at weird angles, showing that it is not fastened firmly enough inside the drive; it's only a matter of time before it breaks off entirely and the drive is kaput.

So I moved on to the second drive. When first inserted, it claimed to Disk Utility that it was 1.9 TB in size. As really cool as that would have been, it prevented the drive from being formatted. Unplugging and replugging had no effect--it steadfastly claimed to be 1.9 TB in size. I was eventually able to format it on another computer but this is just weird. I've never had issues with USB drives before and now suddenly 2 out of 3 of the same model give me bizarre behavior? It's time to move on to a different brand. I read recently that Kingston has started subcontracting its manufacture out to other, less-reliable firms. I strongly suspect that's what happened here; to get a cheap 32Gb drive to market they went with the low bidder and slapped the "Kingston" name on it. Sad.
Was a Great product - until it died. . I received the 4 GB version free from Kingston as a replacement to a different model that gone bad but was still under warranty. When I got it, I reformated it to exFat, which increases its read/write speed. It has worked beautifully.

The 4 GB is still working fine. But the 64 GB that I bought just died taking more than 20 GB of data with it. Fortunately is was backed up -- but still. Kingston used to offer great products, but lately they don't seem up par. This is the third USB drive I have had to send back to Kingston customer service....
Simply doesn't work with XP or Windows 7 . Initially my 2 computers running windows 7 would see the drive about half the time but this eventually went to not at all or occasionally would see the drive and say it needed to format the drive first, then would say it can't communicate with the drive to format it. I tried everything on the support list at [...] to fix it. I tried multiple computers, XP, Windows 7 to no avail. I'm now trying to get [...], Kingston or Amazon to refund my money or give me a different drive. All my computers work fine with other flash drives and external hard drives. Of course, except my other Kingston 4GB drive, it works maybe 10% of the time and you have to repeatedly restart the computer to get the drive to work. I wont buy Kingston stuff (not the word I wanted to use) anymore.

My Country Tis of Thee . Excellent rendition of the lovely lady of America. I'm going to be working out of the country for a year and she'll be the perfect tiny accessory to keep me company. Arrived in record time with no problems. Great gift idea!
Super Talent Rubber RB LIB Series 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive STP8GBLYGN Reviews
nifty gift . My daughter is teaching in a university as a Peace Corps volunteer and was told "Americana" gifts are always appreciated. Among other things, she took this -- useful, very American, very witty.
It would make a fun stocking stuffer, too, I think.
Awesome . I needed to give out some gifts that look like the Statue of Liberty and this was perfect.

This review is from : Samsung S1 Mini 120 GB USB 2.0 1.8-Inch Portable External Hard Drive HXSU012BA/M22 (PianoBlack)
Much better than expected . As a user of several external hard drives, I was skeptical due to the size - it's about HALF AS BIG as a traditional external drive, but operates quieter and faster than it's big brothers.

I'm looking forward to future LARGER sizes (please!) but this is going to be my new mobile drive for video editing. Streams 720p just fine during editing and had very spritely performance while copying large files.

Bravo!
