You can also use your 2big Network 2 as a print server and expand its capacity by connecting external hard drives into the external ports (USB and eSATA). It’s easy to change your RAID mode using the 2big Network 2’s web interface. For maximum capacity, choose a RAID 0 array of the two hard drives. For maximum protection, choose RAID 1 for automatic mirroring of one disk to the other (available capacity = 50%). The hot-swappable disk trays even allow maintenance without affecting your workflow; a defective disk can be replaced easily without having to turn off the 2big Network 2. Get extra security and increase data portability by backing up your 2big Network 2—on your own schedule—to an external hard drive through its USB and eSATA ports using the built-in copy system. The 2big Network 2 also comes with three client licenses for Genie Backup Manager Pro™ for Windows and three licenses for Intego Backup Manager Pro™ for Mac to install on each PC or Mac for client backups to the NAS. You can connect your 2big Network 2 directly to your computer through a USB cable to access to a dedicated folder USBShare of up to 500GB like a normal external hard drive. This unique feature allows you to gain extra flexibility and mobility for customized usage so you’ll be able to format this USBShare in your preferred file system using your computer. With the 2big Network 2’s new widget-based dynamic web interface, administration is easy, convenient and secure.

Great remote access - easy configuration - and yes some fan noise . Build quality on the drive is amazing...the thing is built like a brick. It shipped with two Samsung 2TB drives (model HD204UI/Z4) which is the "EcoGreen" model with (supposedly) low power consumption. The air blowing out of the vent has always been cool, so I guess it's true.
After reading the reviews, I was wary of the fan noise, but I took a chance anyway. Out of the box, the fan was very loud, and ran constantly. I thought that I would have to run an Ethernet cable to an adjacent room to get away from the noise, however, the fan noise was greatly reduced after upgrading the firmware on the drive to v1.3.6 (it shipped with v1.3.3)...clearly Lacie made some changes to the fan control in v1.3.6. I still hear the fan running, but it is bearable now.
I specifically bought this drive over a Seagate BlackArmor since Lacie seemed to have the remote access figured out. The built-in file browser is good (although not great for uploading many files remotely since you can only select 16 files at a time), and I love being able to share my files/photos with family/friends. Remote access setup was easy once I figured out how to enable port-forwarding on my Linksys WCG200 (be sure to use port 80 as they state in the manual).
Installation of the Lacie Network Assistant on my iMac was flawless...really nice integration, although I haven't tried using it with iTunes or TimeMachine yet. Drive configuration using the browser screens is great...setting up users and shares is quick and straightforward.
Overall, I am very happy with the purchase!

LaCie 2 big Network v.2 3 TB Gigabit Ethernet Professional 2-Bay RAID Hard Drive 301508U Reviews
Great Network Backup or File Server . I've been using the 1 TB version for three years and have had no problems what so ever. It's a great backup option, especially when you can plug in two more USB drives to increase storage. I have 2 1 TB USBs added as "deep backup" for system restore files and long term backup, all accessed right through the LaCie. The LaCie runs as short term backup and music file server. It's been very dependable. The unit uses little power and the attached USB drives are Fantome brand enclosures that go to sleep when not in use so it stays pretty quiet. The fan on the LaCie is definitely noticeable but not loud. An important note is that the rated capacity is for "big" mode which adds the two enclosed drives together as one extended drive. The better way to run this is in raid mirrored mode so that if one hard drive dies you can swap it and not lose data. The LaCie will automatically rebuild the mirrored drive.

LaCie 2 big Network v.2 3 TB Gigabit Ethernet Professional 2-Bay RAID Hard Drive 301508U Opinions
Excellent RAID server . 2big Network 2 comes with two hard drives, and can work in two RAID modes: RAID 0 and RAID 1. The latter configuration supports hot swapping, in a situation when one of the disks fails. I chose to set up RAID 1 mode, since it offers maximum redundancy by mirroring both drives, at the cost of cutting the total available storage capacity in half. I have also connected the RAID server to UPS through USB interface. By the way, the drive also has a special function for managing power consumption. The casing is made from ribbed aluminum which together with the quiet fan system cool the hard drives efficiently. I love it!

Works as advertised . 2big consists of two internal hard drives, 2 TB each, which are combined in a single RAID-array. This is a great solution for our network. We have only a few computers at our office, and we needed a centralized file server. 2big Network 2 has been working seamlessly so far. It supports Dynamic DNS, all popular network protocols, and can be easily managed via a user-friendly web interface. It can be also used as a printer server, which is very convenient. It's a good device and I'm fully satisfied with it thus far.
Excellent media server! . Simply awesome! You'll have to look far and wide for quality like this. The device can copy media files at speeds that I never even dreamed of! This thing supports iTunes streaming over the network, and since I've got a a sizable library of music, I stream everything to a player with a good acoustic system. Overall, I like this drive, and its 4TB capacity is great too.
Really cool device! . I needed a NAS drive for my office, and decided to purchase 2big Network2. The drive doesn't hum when it works, the casing is constructed especially for optimal cooling. The ribbed surface dissipates up to 60% of the heat generated by the internal drives, and the rest of the heat is dispersed with the aid of a quiet ventilation system. When not in use the drive saves power by switching to idle mode, but thanks to the Wake-on-LAN feature, it can be switched back to operating mode from the client side. I think that this is a very good network drive for an office.
Excellent choice . I've recently purchased this NAS drive. Overall I like it. Here are the pros: large storage capacity, remote management possibility, the supplied kit includes everything (the cables, software and a stand for vertical mounting). It can be setup to work with RAID 0 and RAID 1 modes, and it has a hot-swap capability. Also it's UpnP/DLNA compatible and can perform as a media server. Among cons I'd mention that it's a little bit heavy. There are clearly more positives than negatives. I researched many different options before buying this one. And now, after having used this drive for some time, I can definitely say that I made the right choice.
Excellent NAS drive . This NAS drive is mainly used as a file server. It has been working flawlessly for several months now. The RAID 0 and RAID 1 modes can be easily changed depending on the situation, which is convenient. Other devices can be connected via USB port if additional space is required. I'm very impressed at the quality and durability of this unit so far and hope it'll continue serving me well for years.
Working perfectly! . I'm very pleased with this device. 2big Network 2 is very easy to setup and use. The RAID modes can be simply configured by switching a button on the back panel of the drive. I've chosen the RAID 1 mirroring mode as it provides maximum security. The file transfer speed is quite good. The device is supplied with an installation software, with an intuitive and simple GUI. I was also pleased that all the necessary cables and a choice of backup software were included with the drive. All in all, this device is just what I needed and I am totally satisfied.
Cons Review
I have had 2 and another LaCiE of these fail with various problems. . First let me start out by saying I have in total 3 LACIE Products fail on me in just over a year of having them.I had a 2Big Network Fail over 1.5 years of use, power supply went no big deal got that replaced, had another one in due time cheap crap.I just had another 2Big Network 2 fail over the weekend, all my shares are gone and was on the phone with LACIE and they just kept saying how the drive had severe corruption. They claim a power problem effect the drive. Well the drives and all the computer equipment is on multiple SMART UPS "ON-LINE" UPS hooked to generator. What power problem did I have, who knows my Synology is running fine in RAID no issues there.I will never buy any Lacie product ever again. They are cheap unreliable and will stop working. The point of this device is to keep my content safe in RAID 1 which it did until it just stopped working (yes I got all my data off the drive) but thats not the point of this. Unreliable junk. When I purchased this for $450 / unit it was a great deal of cash and for Lacie to just shrug off and say too bad. The unit was always on but had very limited used. Well I know a lot of people the word has spread LACIE so long customers.Summary: If you want problems buy from LACIE. If you don't want headaches simply do not use their products.I feel bad for those who bought the big units for $900+ they have the same cheap components inside.
