Seagate Drive . This is a great drive. It is fast, silent, and seems to be reliable. It works well with my PC and Laptop. However, there are two minor quirks. 1)I use an IBM Thinkpad X31 laptop. When I boot up with the Seagate drive plugged into my USB port, my IBM system won't boot up unless the Seagate drive is disconnected. I changed my BIOS boot priorities to ignore the Seagate drive, but that didn't work. 2) The drive comes with two "pigtails" on the USB cable. One "pigtail" is labelled data + power, the other pigtail is labelled power only. It seems like this drive may consume more power than other drives and Seagate was forced to add an additional pigtail to draw power from a second USB port. Apparently, my PC's USB port provides enough power so the 2nd "pigtail" isn't used.
If you want a good, reliable drive, you can't go wrong with a Seagate drive.

Compact durable and fast portable storage . I have had this storage device for over three months and it is a great device. I like the small, sleek design and the hard case. It is about 6 inches by 4 inches by 1.5 inches and very light. You can take it anywhere and store it anywhere. The data transfer rate on Windows XP is incredible- it's about 11mbps! (Just remember to reformat the drive from FAT32 to the XP format of NTFS). I also used the drive on Windows ME but the data transfer rate was much worse. The device is also bus powered so you don't need an external power supply. All in all, it's a great device.

POWER: I could not find any information about this hard drive's power source. So, for those of you who may be wondering, all you have to do is plug in the USB cable from the HD into the computer. That's it! (It does NOT come with an AC plug because you probably DON'T need one, even though there's a place to use one on it, just in case.) No switches. No buttons. No worries! The USB cable actually has two "heads." One is for power+data (the one you'll probably use most often); the other is for power only. On some older computers that can't power the HD on just the power+data "head" alone, you'll need to plug in both instead.
SPEED: When I create a folder on the HD, it takes just a second or two to respond. Other than that, I am quite pleased with the data transfer speed.
QUIET and COOL: It's true that this HD is quiet! In fact, it's VERY quiet! Also, during and after usage, it is COOL to the touch. Not even warm. COOL. I can pick it up and put it away, just like that.
PORTABILITY: I was pleasantly suprised as to just how small this drive is. It's about the size of a grown-up's hand. I can easily put it in my backpack and/or put it on the desk without it taking up too much room.
WEIGHT: It's quite light for a hard drive that can hold 40gb. It feels a little weighted, like a small desk paperweight. You probably won't notice any difference putting it away into a backpack, etc.
40GB: I'm still amazed that this baby can hold 40gb, which is more than enough for my needs. I used it to back up my laptop (including all my video and music files), desktop, and my computer work I do at school.
OVERALL: I am VERY happy with this HD. It is very convenient, PORTABLE, user-friendly, and there are no drivers or software to install to use it. I can plug it in to virtually any computer and use it the next instant. It's awesome for the price! If you're looking for something simple, elegant, and easy to use, I strongly suggest this HD.

Don't forget the cable! . Good drive overall; silent, compact and feels solid. Just don't forget or lose the cable! A standard 6' USB 2.0 cable apparently will not provide enough power get the drive running. And the special 'Y' cable is not a commonly available item.
I OWN THREE OF THESE . I own three of these units. I am a professional photographer so I need the storage. Yes, these little 40 gig units seem expensive "per gig" but you must consider that they are very small, portable, stackable, hot-swapable, fast and, best of all, they are powered by the USB so you don't have to waste outlets and you won't have extra power cords and transformers to get tangled. They are almost silent in use and it was a snap to load the provided software (I work on a PC) I keep only one USB cable plugged-in to the computer, available for all three units, and just hot-swap among them when I want to change drives.
Excellent buy . Excellent! You may find this to be bit expensive but its worth the price. Very silent operation, quick data transfer and no hassels.. just plug and play. Never had to use the power cable.. only plug in one usb port was sufficient. Rhobust design was wonderful but the size isnt as small as yo may assume from some pictures.. But overall wonderful device..

Very Useful! With good customer service too! . I was really needing some kind of storage medium with at least 7GB of storage space to backup my f1 challenge 99-02 save. I decided to try to look on amazon.com to see if they had any good deals. I found a few portable hard drives that would work with my pc. Some had issues with reliabilty and others were too expensive. Then I came across this Seagate drive. I read the other reviews about it and they said it worked well. There were others out there that had more space for more money but this one worked out just fine for me. It also doubled my storage capacitiy! When my computer's hard drive started to run out of space, I simply transfered a lot of my data to the Seagate drive. Very useful! Seagate even has good customer service. I called them to see if this portable hard drive would work with my computer because my computer does not have usb 2.0 ports. I got through to someone quickly and they answered my question quickly! I've had it for only a couple of months now and it still works great! I would recommened this to anyone needing more storage capacity for their computer. I'm planning on getting Seagate drives from now on. It will probbaly be this same model too!
Consumes too much power - can't drive it from USB hub . My system only included 1 USB port, and I use a USB hub to connect all of the other peripherals.
This unit came with a cable with two USB heads, which I thought was suspicious. Sure enough, plugging it into the hub gave it enough power to light up the LED (it flashed to indicate something was wrong) but not enough to spin the drive.
Since the unit didn't come with an auxiliary power supply, and my whole intent was to be USB-powered, I had to return it.

Cons Review
WORKED AWESOME UNTIL THE WARRANTY EXPIRED..then it broke . I thought this was the greatest portable external hard drive ever made. It worked flawlessly and reliably...until the warranty expired. In fact the hard drive expired three days after the warranty did. Nice.
Seagate has a great reputation, but I also had Seagate internal drive, which broke on me in about two years. This external one only lasted one year.
I'm getting Maxtors for now on. I never had problems with them.
