Great burner so far. . Before ordering this LaCie DVD burner, I had purchased the Iomega SuperSlim USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer. But I had to return the Iomega burner because it stank. Literally, it smelled terrible! The Iomega burner gave off a horrible sweet CHEMICAL SMELL, especially while running.

But this LaCie Portable Slim DVD burner seems to be working fine, with no noticeable odor! I have burnt several discs with only 1 error (unreadable sector) so far. I also like the cable that comes with the drive much better. It's small and not too ugly, like a lot of cables can be (if you care about that sort of thing).

The LaCie burner does feel light and plasticy, but it does NOT feel like it's about to break. It seems sturdy and well made. The only problem is the circular button which holds the disc in place is a bit too big, so when I try to put a disc in the drive I have to press down a bit harder to get the disc to click into place. This causes the body of the drive to move (tilt up) because the whole thing is so light. So I have to hold the drive door with one hand while putting the disc in with the other. But this is not a bit deal to me.

When the drive door opens to eject a disc, it pops open just a centimeter or so and stops. You have to then pull the door open enough to get the disc out. It is not an automatic, smooth opening like we have come to expect on a DVD player. But this is fine for me, because I travel a lot with the burner and I usually don't want an opening drive door to bump into all the other crap on my desk.

So far, I think this burner is great. It has a shiny black case, which I was afraid would look tacky. As with most other LaCie products, this drive looks very elegant, despite it being mostly made of plastic. However, the shiny black shell does show a lot of finger prints. I suggest wearing gloves every time you touch it. No! just kidding :) They are just finger prints, it's no big deal. But it would be nice if the case were made of the same black, brushed metalic-like case as the LaCie Rikiki.

This burner worked just fine with my Macbook pro. I have no use for the lightscribe technology, so I can't review that functionality. Overall, very good drive so far.

It's USB Bus-Powered--Sorta . It's nice in many ways, and the LightScribe capability is good to have, although I don't use it very often except for gifts or business. But the big disappointment here is LaCie's idea of "bus-powered." If the first USB cable doesn't power the drive sufficiently, they invite you to use an auxiliary USB cable (included), all very well, if untidy, but then that uses up both USB ports on my MacBook, relegating me to using the touchpad whenever I use the drive, instead of my mouse. I hate the touchpad.

If you don't like that, you can buy a power supply. LaCie wants $29 for that!

A hub won't help you here, unless it's powered...

Cons Review

Junk . I bought this a couple of years ago and have been disappointed since. It has up and quit for no apparent reason. The case is thin cheap plastic which flexes to the point that if you pick it up to eject a disk it won't come out because the cover is crushing the disk. You have to hold it by the edges and you will because it won't eject with the button after the first month or so. It's poking it with the old paper clip every time. It's been nothing but a hassle. Now I can't get my computer to recognize it, I think it is embarrassed to be on the same desk. It seems to burn cd's OK when it works.....so I gave it a star.Run from this puppy. Make sure you find one with a real cover on it and is well constructed. I 'm going to be "hands on" when I buy another.

Cute but... . It is hard to put the flash drive back in, it's a little tight to re-insert to the bottom part. Then that flash drive itself came off of the head it's attached to, I looked closely and there's a crack where it came off of. Not good quality and inconvenient to use, especially for children.

Well made and fun USB port and collectible in one . This is a well made and very nicely painted model of the R2-Q5, a black version of R2-D2, that shows up in one of the movies. When you plug it into one of your computer's USB ports, it swivels its head about 20 degrees left, and then back across to 20 degrees to the right, does that about 4 times when plugged in. At the same time it makes R2 beeping sounds, like you hear many times in the movies, which basically is R2 language!

The color of the highlights are a Copper color, which looks to be a perfect match for an actual photo I saw published on the Net of the droid in the movie, even though I have seen websites claim it should be gold, and one site said this item itself had red highlights.

Every 3 minutes of being idle it makes a quick single back and forth swivel of its head, again with R2 sounds. The very top round part of the head is a button - press that and it also does a quick single back and forth swivel of its head, although a little faster. And it makes sounds and swivels when you plug in an actual USB flash drive.

I searched all over the Net for reviews of this item and could not find out if you can turn the sounds off. Well, you can! R2-Q5 does have a switch to turn off the sounds. It is flush with the case, and located just above the USB cord connection point. It is not immediately apparent, which explains all the reviews on the Net not mentioning it. With the sounds turned OFF the head still swivels back and forth every 3 minutes, and you can still make it swivel back and forth on demand by pushing the button on the top - but you just get no sound.

The front LED light "sensor" light blinks blue then red at all times, non-stop. The sensor light on the back blinks on and off an amber yellow color. There is no switch to tun off the lights, but you can just unplug it from your computer to do that (remember that USB is hot swappable, you can do that all you want and it will not bother your computer - as long as there is no drive in any of the R2's ports).

You will need a display location for this R2 that has about 6 inches clearance for the height, and about 4 inches clearance front to back and 4 inches side to side.

When plugged into my computer running Windows 7 it was detected perfectly, and it transferred files from a flash drive (thumb drive) as normal, no discernible issues (I did not run benchmarks on the file transfer times).

Being something of a Star Wars fan I thought it would be cool to have this act as one of my USB hubs on my main computer. I had seen similar ones before, but just the European ones that are an R2-D2 housing on USB jacks. The idea of something that blinked and beeped and such sounded almost like it would feel like you had your own little R2 unit on your desk interfacing with your USB add ons. While it is a fun product, it has a few flaws that really don't make it worth the asking price.

The unit has four USB plugs and sits about six inches tall. When you plug an item in, the unit swivels its head and makes a series of beeps like you hear from the R2 astromech droids in Star Wars. There is also a button on top of its head that will let you make it turn its head and beep in a different sequence when you want to show it off. It also turns its head and emits a single beep every 3 minutes. There is a light at the front of its head that will flash blue-red and an amber light at the back of its head. Both stay on as long as the unit is powered. It is pretty well built, but the instructions show the arms can be removed, so they are a little wobbly as you handle the unit. This isn't much of an issue since you probably wouldn't be handling this much, but it's not built like a tank which can be an issue for the handling you do have to do. So, overall it is a cute little desktop item that can be fun for your hardcore Star Wars aficionados. However, the problems I experienced may make all but the most die-hard fans think twice about paying $90 for the item.

INCONSISTENT CONNECTION
A couple of the USB ports on my model didn't always register the attached device consistently. On occasion I would plug in a memory stick and it would appear under My Computer and disappear, then appear and disappear. All the while the droid is spinning its head and beeping for 3-4 minutes straight. (I let it go that long since I was putting it through its paces.) Overall the performance wasn't bad, but that issue did crop up on a couple of the ports enough that it became a concern in terms of considering whether or not I would deem this a worthwhile purchase in the long term.

REALLY HAVE TO CRAM THE USB PLUGS IN
The USB port connections are *tight*. While a secure connection is obviously desirable, this means you not only have to brace the unit to plug a device in, but you may have to pick it up and cradle it securely in your hand to have enough leverage to suitably push the USB plug in. If the unit was more solidly built this might not be an issue, but since it is a little wobbly and you don't want to put any force on the head it means you have to brace the body solidly while handling the rest of it gingerly to plug an item in. If you're going to use this as a hub for devices that stay plugged in consistently it shouldn't be an issue. But if you're using this largely as a memory stick hub and will be swapping items out a lot you will probably find it a bit inconvenient to always have to brace this thing while being mindful of its more delicate parts. With a standard USB hub you can generally manhandle it pretty well as you brace it. The R2-Q5 hub, however, has to have a little more consideration.

3-MINUTE BEEP
This, combined with the price, was the real deal-breaker for me. The sounds and lights on the unit are really nice. The tones they selected for the droid are some of the more pleasant ones in the standard Star Wars astromech "language." Some R2 toys use many of the more shrill tones that can be downright unpleasant but these ones are less of the "beep, whistle, and shriek" sounds and more of the "boop, chuckle, and woo" tones. The tones and movement are fun when you plug a device in. However, it also makes a soft beep and turns its head every three minutes. The sound itself isn't bad, but the consistent 3-minute interval starts to wear on you after the novelty is gone. In fact, there were a few times that it startled me because I was focused on what I was reading. You can turn the sounds off, but the motor that drives the head is also loud enough that it actually kind of drowns out the beeps and boops. So even without the beep the 3-minute motion causes a "whrrr" from the motor.

All in all it's not a bad item, but the issue of having to cradle it to cram the plugs in and the 3-minute beep eventually becoming an annoyance convinced me to return this product for a refund. The other issue was these annoyances on top of the price of almost $90 at the time of purchase and review. If this was maybe $30 then I'd connect it to my laptop that I use largely as a music and movie player and let it do its thing when I'm in the mood for it - plus it would actually be handy access to that laptop's USB interface. But at $90, I just can't see keeping this thing to have on when I'm in the mood for it. It's too bad, as I really like it overall. I just wish the 3-minute beep could be turned off entirely (not just the sound) and that the price would come down. After all, for about $40 more you can actually get the big, interactive R2-D2.

SanDisk Cruzer Gator 8GB . I bought two of these for file backups. They both work great.

They come with the U3 software pre-installed. When you plug the device in for the first time, it comes up with a dialog box that asks you if you would like to activate the U3 capability. I chose not to activate U3 on both of my devices. When you don't activate U3 it leaves a program on the device that you can use to reactivate U3 later, if you want to. I erased the preinstalled software on one and reformatted the flash drive. I left the reactivate program on the other, in case I want to try U3 later.

I have used both devices for 4G backup runs. No problems with either of them, so far. Nothing exciting at all - which is probably the best thing you could possibly say about a storage device.

I would have liked a way to clip this onto something, like a keyring, because it is small and can get lost in my bag easily.

Heavy Use No Issues! . I use my Gator flash drive all the time, at least a few times a week. It always works, I've never had an issue. The cap is still tight even after popping it on and off repeatedly when I'm bored. Would definately recommend!

Great compact storage space . This is a great and very reliable flash drive. It is small and sturdy. The croc skin is an added attraction on it.

Good but not great ... . I bought 4 similar SanDisk Flash Disk devices. 2 - 4GB, 1 - 8GB, 1 - 64GB.

I have had excellent luck in the past with SanDisk products.

However, I had trouble from the "get go" with all 4 devices. It turned out it was the U3 product included on each drive. Very POOR documentation on the effects of U3 use. And, basically IMPOSSIBLE to use for backup purposes from a DOS Prompt (the way I learned to automatically do "stuff," way back in the 1980s). Constant "Invalid Path" messages. I tried everything, and then deleted ALL U3 programs. Finally, EVERYTHING worked as it should have in the first place ... at least in my estimation. NO longer ANY problems.

I still think that SanDisk devices are GREAT. But, the inclusion of U3, has NOT been carefully thought out, in my humble opinion. Order SanDisk products. Unload the U3 "junk" included on them (you uninstall them from a U3 screen), and use the product like another disk drive, except it is removable and easily transferable.

Nice little fellow . I have used and loved (not literally) this thing since I got it. The only complaint I would have with it is that the top that covers the USB part is COMPLETELY unnecessary and I'm pretty sure I've actually lost it and have no idea where it is.

Cry when you lose 8GB . It works great as everyone says. However, it is really easy to lose !!!!

The biggest problem is that there is NO LOOP for a strap or keychain. That means you have to put it in your pocket to collect lint and static. Not to mention you can lose 8GB of data.

I can recommend you to buy this for home use. I DON'T recommend this for portability because there is a potential to lose 8GB of confidential information.

Cons Review

It doesn't work! . The flash drive was a problem from the day I got it. I purchased this drive so that I would have RELIABLE data storage that I could easily and safely transport. The first problem I had was the necessity to disable some proprietary software resident on the flash drive. The software didn't do what it was supposed to do. The next problem was getting rid of that software and just using the flash drive to store data. With some help from the Amazon people I was able to contact those in the know and re-format the drive. NEXT, I began to lose all of the data I had stored on it. Fortunately, I did have backup of the files I had intended to store on it but each time I saved to it I would have it come up and show that there was NOTHING on it or it wouldn't "come up" at all (mount). So, thanks to Amazon (and thanks as well to the company who sold it through Amazon), I was able to return it and get a refund of my purchase price.

Great little flash . I actually purchased this Kingsto 4GB flash drive from Buy.com. The price was amazing ($6.95, no S&H) and that is cheaper than in the stores. This flash drive is more compact compared to the other two that I have. It does not have a cap and is not retractable which is quite refreshing. To get to it, there is a swivel piece that swivels around the entire drive.

When plugging into any computer so far, it is recognized very fast (faster than my previous two).

The only setback that others may have problems with it the loop that is supposed to hook it on a keychain or something. The loop is very small and you may have a hard time getting something through there.

Other than that, a great flash drive. I love it! It gets the job done. I would recommend this to everyone!

Good overall significant annoyance when Hibernating a Windows machine . Works fast and seems to be reliable. Setup was very easy and it runs a lot cooler than my previous external drive. Personally, I like the power-saving spin-down feature, as it prevents the drive from spinning idly for days on end (as sometimes happened with my previous drive when I forgot to switch it off). The downside of this is that it doesn't have a power button that you can press to manually turn it off.

Obviously, it has the advertised size and connection options (750G/USB only). The included USB cable is a bit on the short side, and since it's a mini-USB connector on the drive side, it's not a simple matter of just swapping in any old USB cable you have lying around.

For another 50 bucks you can upgrade to Seagate's next tier of drives with additional eSATA Seagate ST307504FPA1E2-RK FreeAgent Pro 750 GB USB/eSATA External Hard Drive and Firewire Seagate ST307504FPA1E3-RK FreeAgent Pro 750 GB USB/eSATA/FireWire400 External Hard Drive connection options. Not worth the extra cost to me. I primarily use my external drive for full-disk backups of my two internal hard drives. Whether I'm getting 30MB/s over USB or 300MB/s over eSATA, it's still going to take a significant amount of time to backup an entire hard drive and then verify the backup image. Plus, right now my backup speed is gated by CPU for compression, so I doubt I'd see any difference at all.

Finally, for the aspect of this drive that I find really annoying and why I gave it a 3. When you Hibernate a Windows machine with the drive attached, it takes an extra 5-10 seconds to restart. At some point early in the boot process it blocks waiting for the drive to spin up. This can not be avoided without physically disconnecting either the USB or power cable. Using "Safely Remove Hardware" in Windows before hibernating doesn't make a difference - it still blocks the boot process (although the drive isn't available in Windows after resuming). A very annoying and unavoidable waste of time.

Decent external drive . I have this one for more than 6 months now and am satisfied overall.
Perhaps, the important thing to note is that this works well with Linux. I'm using Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 and it worked out of the box. I didn't reformat the drive to ext3. Works fine in NTFS mode.

It's good to have plenty of space to store music and videos, take backups and throw whatever bulky trash that might be lying around on your laptop on this one. It devours it all... and doesn't burp. It has a built-in idle timer, which puts the drive to sleep, if it's not in use. This helps conserve power, as well as drive life. A welcome feature. Also, it has a cool yellow backlit strip in the front, which demands attention, esp if you keep your room dark. If you are accessing the drive, the yellow light alternately lights up and fades out, which is kinda cool. The power adapter is slim, which means you don't waste additional sockets on your power strip.

You do need to plug this one into a power socket to operate it. Just USB doesn't power it up, which is quite expected. It is not the quietest external drive I have seen. And don't expect this one to be ultra-portable either. If you are thinking of carrying this around in a suitcase, consider something else. The base, kinda makes it bulky and you don't want to be lugging the power adapter around anyways. I would say this is for your server/desktop at home. A mildly annoying (bug?) of this drive is its wake up time. It takes a good 10 seconds or more to wake up on a Linux system (should be similar on Windows), once it sleeps. But, I can live with it. It's not my primary drive after all.

Meh it's an external nothing special.. . For the price it wasn't bad.
The light bar is only visible from the right side, which is worthless if you have it to the right of you.
The drive takes about 5 sec to spin up, which is annoying on bootup (especially when you have a few of them) and annoying when you are accessing it. Not a huge deal, but dumb design.
Speaking of dumb design, they use a small usb connector - no clue why they didn't put in a full size B connector. Again, not a big deal, but you have to pack the cable if you take it somewhere because chances are, people won't have a mini usb cable.
Hope it lasts.
The esata versions of this drive are terrible, the reviews speak for themselves.

Warning: software is not compatible wth Vista 64 . (Below is a copy of a review I also submitted on Buy.com)

Be warned: the software for this drive is not supported with Vista 64.

The drive itself works fine and I would give just the drive all ratings of 4 or 5. Setup was easy and the USB 2 connection works fine; my system detected the drive and ran the autoinstall for the FreeAgent Tools and the Seagate branded version of Memeo AutoBackup.

Once installed, however, the FreeAgent Tools sofware does not run. Seagate technical support told me to try to run the program with XP SP2 compatibility; this failed. On the Seagate forums, users had success with Windows 2000 compatibility instead, and that worked for me.

The Memeo AutoBackup is an entirely different matter. It is not supported under Vista 64 either. The version that comes with the drive is 2.00.1291. When it runs, it tells you there is an update (2.50.2785) available. I downloaded and installed this and AutoBackup failed to run and the service does not get installed. I uninstalled it and reinstalled the Seagate tools from the hard drive to recover from this. Segate responded to my tech support requests by stating that the software is not compatible with Vista 64.

After reinstalling (at least uninstall lets it keep your settings and bacup directory selections), AutoBackup runs again, but the first backup ran overnight and only backed up 10% of the selected files. Half the time, it reports that the AutoBackup service is not running. The documentation says it can backup without the user logging in, but this does not seem to be so. I have to log in, then I have to grant permission for AutoBackup launcher to run.

After restarting (again), the backups ran much better (it has backed up over 70GB), but the software is still buggy. I had configured it to backup a c:\Public folder which contains subdirectories called "Documents" and "Media". This worked OK. Later, I added a new "Pictures" folder, but AutoBackup did not back this up, even though it should backup all new files/directories added to a selected directory. So, I don't trust it.

The UI for selecting backup exclusions is very poor. For each exlcusion, you must open a dialog, navigate to the folder (the software does not remember your last selection, you you must start at My Computer, C:, etc. and drill down). You cannot type in a path, either. This UI should be the exact same as the UI for selecting which directories to backup: present a full tree and check which ones to backup or exclude.

Also, when selecting what to backup or exclude, you can only select directories; you cannot select files. So, I can't exclude the 'Trash' or 'Junk' files that Mozilla Thunderbird creates.

So, if you buy this, use it as a great external drive; don't expect the software to provide good backups. (YMMV; it may work better on Vista 32; I just don't know.)

Hard Drive . This seems to be a very good external HD. I have used it to store all of my important things from my computer in case my PC ever crashes. A good idea for everyone. Buy one.

Seagate FreeAgent FreesMe . This is my third 750GB drive from Seagate - I keep the 3rd one 'on' and doing the dsaily backups of my precious photo - evry now and again I fire up the first two Seagate 750GBs and backup the backups to them

No Problems Yet . In my ever growing need to store more and more large image files and thousands of mp3s I continue to buy larger and larger drives. So this drive replaces 2 250 Gig externals that I had been using, I still use those to back up the data from this which is now my main drive. I'm using it on a 6 year old computer with a measly 80 Gig internal drive, so really this drive is all of my data. I have used it for about a year now with no problems and I like being able to plug it into other computers to transfer stuff over since it is way quicker than trying to do it over my network. My only complaints are that it has kind of a large base thingy that is not removable so you have to stand it up on end as shown in the pictures and also if it is in sleep mode it takes a few seconds, maybe like 5-10 to get up to speed and give you your data. But I use it every day and have about 320 Gigs worth of data on it and it does what I would expect. So if you are looking for an external drive you should definitely consider this one if the price and size meet your needs.

Nice Design and Easy to use . That's it, nice design and easy to use including simple drivers, like that when it is plugged in the side LED lights up. No problems with it corrupting data or info not loading or saving, nice.

Cons Review

Disk OK - Mac compatibility NOT existent . Seagate are by now well aware based on my (and others') many complaints that despite the advertisement suggesting this drive set (Free Agent USB) is Mac compatible, it fails the test regularly. The drive management software for Mac lacks the ability to control the interval before spin down - normally set at 15 minutes, this would not be a problem. However, it often: resets to 60 seconds (!) and resets to USB 1! There is no way to change the value unless you configure it using the PC version of Drive Manager (where the sleep timer setting exists). Otherwise, be prepared for awful sleep/wake activity and super slow transfer speeds. If you have Parallels or other virtual machine with Windows installed, using the PC drive manager seems to set the drive up OK - I have only had it switch back to flaky behavior a few times. The drive itself is very quiet (fanless) and under its regular operation seems to perform well. Buyer beware...

Unreliable and crashes frequently . I used this hard drive as my backup hard drive for about 6 months until it stopped working. I was able to obtain another one from Seagate under warranty and about 7 months later it stopped working. It seems it is safe to say this line is defective and I would recommend another brand such as Western Digital that is more reliable.

Incredible convenience! . So two things happened that [were bad]:1) I bought a laptop, not realizing that it didn't have a floppy drive. 2) My digital camera came with a secure digital card that was WAY too small to be useful (16MB), and I immediately replaced it with something practical. Now what to do with that tiny little card?Needing a way to transfer files at home and at work, I bought this great little card reader. I love it!!The set up was a little shaky; I couldn't get get it to work and it kept crashing my computer. After about 10 minutes of this, I put the card back in the camera, reformatted it, and PRESTO! Works great, and with XP required no set up software. It does what it should do. . I like the Sandisk 2 In 1 USB Reader for Compact Flash and Secure Digital cards. What can I say, it does what it supposed to do, and does it well.

Great size for travel . I loved the size and functionality of the product. The file transfer speed is not bad as I thought and it can support flash, SD and sony stick. Only drawback is the fact that plug and play is only for Windows XP and up. For Win 98 and 2000 one must install the driver. It becomes a hassles to install a driver in a internet cafe when you are travelling.

Good to go... . Works very good....especially with WinXP.

Cons Review

A pain in the [butt] . I have had one of these for weeks and have had Hell's own time trying to get it to work with Win2K. When it is kind enough to let itself be installed, it stops woring when I restart. I got complex instructions from SanDisk support involving a registry edit and it failed again. Now they are telling me I need to use it with a powered hub. I bought one, and I will try it, but for now it is an expensive paperweight.
