A little more information not provided by Amazon . I received this drive today (Nov. 10, 2009). It is a 5400 RPM drive and uses .6 amps operating and 1 amp on spin-up. Apple's disk utility calls it a "WDC WD50 00BEVT-22ZAT0 Media", which is no doubt manufactured by Western Digital. However, a search of WD's website returned zilch so I assume it's strictly an OEM product for HP. It comes with a case and a USB cable. The cable has one connector for the drive and two (2) connectors for the computer. Again I assume this is for extra power on computers that limit USB power but on my MacBook Pro it runs fine with only one connection. It comes formatted for Windows, but of course no problem formatting it for a Mac. I ran a benchmark on it and got the following maximum results:
Random write - 27.40 MB/s @ 512KB block size
Random read - 33.11 MB/s @ 16MB block size
Sustained write - 27.04 MB/s @ 512 KB block size
Sustained read - 34.79 MB/s @ 16 MB block size
This is not too shabby considering it's 5400 RPM on a USB 2.0 connection. And as the previous reviewer pointed out, it is bus powered, so no power blocks/cords. It also comes with Windows backup software, but since I don't use Windows anymore except occasionally in a virtual machine, I can't comment on it. So far, I'm well satisfied with the drive and would recommend it. 5 stars.

HP Pockt Media Drive 500 GB . The product was new in the box and the price and service were terrific. It works perfectly and I would highly recommend it for an easy backup solution. It also comes with cables for USB2 connection as well as a case for portability and can be used even if you do not have the HP slot.

Excellent Hard Drive . This is the best external hard drive I have used. I have another that is heading to the dust heap, hated it, it was clunky and took forever to work, and have used web solutions, also slow. This thing has great capacity, is compact and portable, and very easy to use, plus it is the fastest back up I have tried. I am only backing up My Documents, lots of pictures and music files, not to mention work related documents - figure if the computer goes, a new one will come with programs and an operating system, and I will load MS Office back on. So far I have backed up 3 computers and there is plenty of room for more. I am looking at my son's laptop now, just because this drive is so much fun to use - and there is nothing like the peace of mind that having a big iTunes library saved quickly and easily brings you!

Convenient if you have an HP Pavillion . I have a Pavillion Elite desktop PC that has the Pocket Media Drive bay. All I need to do is insert the drive into the bay and start it up. I like that it does incremental backups, which only take about one minute. I may buy another one to swap out and keep safe.
The initial backup takes a while. The drive itself is not that fast. But again, once you do that first backup, the incremental backups are very quick.

Backup by program on drive works well . HP's new 500Gb drive has a program that starts backup right from the drive. No loading to the desktop. Works very well.
What a Convient Computer Addition! . Between my video camera downloads and camera pictures...and...and, I knew my computer's memory would disappear quickly, not to mention a need to back things up. This hard drive adds loads to my computer memory and offers excellent backup. It's also easy to use, once you get used to it. I felt that the computer registration (required to get the thing started) was unnecessarily complicated, with many steps and ridiculous links. With that registration behind me, I've turned my poor little computer into a luxury car!
HP Pocket Drives . The HP Pocket Drive ia an intergral part of the HP Line and completely portable. It offers High Capacity user comfort of a second drive and yet is removeable without tools just as a thumb drive. It is equipted with a USB cable to connect to other computer that don't have this feature and allows me to share files on the go with ease in it's own beatiful tough carring case with strap. Small enought fit in your pocket. Never will I lose important documents and favorite files again. With 250GB, 320GB, and 500 aravailable. I chose the 500 (one half a Terabite) and plan to buy two more. This beats external hard drives tha that are combersome to carry. Get smart, HP Pocket Drives are where it's at!
HP Pocket Media Drive 500 GB . I have an HP dv9830nr laptop and just purchased an HP HPE380t tower for my office. The Pocket Media Drive slides PERFECTLY into the slot in my tower, and I can also use it as an external drive with my laptop, to keep all my company's quotes backed up on the medial drive as well as my laptop.
