Perfect Compact Drive for Photos & Video . I'm a long-term traveler who works on the road, and these drives are perfect. About the size of a stack of passports, they transfer data quickly to and from my 13" MacBook Pro. I have two of them. I use one for working with video, the other for photos and backups. They come with protective cases too.

G-Technology G-DRIVE mini 500GB 7200RPM Portable External Hard Drive, USB 2.0, Firewire 400, Firewire 800 Interfaces 0G01650 Opinions
Best hard drive I have ever got! . First of anyone who has complained about it randomly disconnecting after using it for awhile it is because they most likely do not have enough energy going to it. I use the newest (2010) Mac book pro and I have no issues with this. Also some others have reviewed that it gets to hot, well yes it does but it is a heat sink the outside gets hot but the inside remains at a correct operating temperature.

Now on to my opinions. My first opinion is that it feels extremely sturdy as sturdy as a macbook does and it looks as good to. When using firewire 800 it transfers at a pleasing speed. I portioned my drive one for time machine and the other for all of my photography. I edit my photos from this drive because I get a quicker response in my program. The only issue I have is that 9 out of 10 times when you hit the power switch it will not read it but I just turn it off and on and it always connects the second time. the drive has never disconnected on me while in use. you really do not have to worry about this issue this drive is extremely reliable. Also If you do get this drive I advise that you get a Pelican 1020 casePelican 1020-027-100 Micro Case with Clear Lid and Carabineer (Yellow) . This case fits the drive as perfect as the packaging that it comes in its crazy there is also room for your wires of choice. With a rugged drive in a extremely rugged case you do not have to worry about breaking it. I highly recommend this drive to anyone who needs a drive.
G-Drive pleasing but not perfect . Good:
Drive seems (generally) reliable and durable.
Bad:
Drive sometimes fails to mount to desktop -- disconnecting and reconnecting several times generally solves the problem, but why does this happen? This can be a real pain.
Prior versions had both Firewire 400 & Firewire 800 ports along with USB 2 (mini). New version has two Firewire 800 ports along with the USB 2 (mini). I would prefer that they had retained the original configuration for backward compatibility OR added a full sized USB 2 port.
G-Tech 500GB Mini - overcoming mounting problems . I have a 2TB G-Tech drive I use as my time machine drive. It sits there and works just fine since April 2010. I purchased two of the 500GB mini drives. I like them because their case is a built in heat sink, and the 2TB drive works just fine. I had a similar problem when I mounted my mini-drive. The 2TB went offline. I could remount the 2TB drive, but I have come across this problem with other drives. Typically I have eight drives on line at one time for massive video projects. Five years ago, I experienced a problem with mounting drives using different firewire access on my Macintosh. I had the built in, as well as a firewire card. As an Engineer, I hate daisy chains, and determined the problem was with the firewire access - not firewire itself, but firewire distribution. So I acquired several Belkin firewire hubs. I use ONE firewire connection, and distribute firewire access through hubs. In my haste, I connected the G-Tech mini drive using a firewire connection on my Mac, causing the problems I experienced with my 2TB drive. Okay, I was not following my own rules for firewire hookup. I connected the g-tech mini through my firewire hub distribution system, and I have no problems what so ever. I am using these mini drives for taking a large volume of data offline and for archiving. I do data logging on-site for independent film projects, so I always have two drives, using a hub. For heavy duty work, I stick with the powered drives. I took one star away because of the mounting problem, which I am sure is a firmware issue, and not one I commonly experience with most drives. Otherwise, a solid product.
Best Little Portable Drive for Video Editing . I use this drive for editing video in Final Cut Pro X with a Mac laptop. It's the second one I've purchased, having filled up my old G-Drive with projects. It's small, reliable, fast and has flexible connectivity and a handy protective case, a great value in a small, portable drive, and it looks cool!
Sleek and Blazing Fast . Love the design of the G-Drives. Bought the G-Drive mini since I'm constantly bringing my files back and forth with me to work.Pros:
Sleek design that matches my MacPro
Blazing fast firewire 800
No need for a power adapter
Completely silent
Stays relatively cool thanks to the integrated heatsink
Lots of included cables
Worked right out of the boxCons:
None at all
Pretty nice drive. . I've only had this drive for about a month, but it's pretty nice. Very fast, included three cables, and it comes with a pretty nice carry case. Seems to work very well so far. I use it mostly for school, so there's lots of HD video, big Photoshop/Illustrator files, and 3D models, all of which are pretty memory-intensive and don't put a dent in this thing.
Only downside is that it sometimes gets pretty heated when running for a few hours, but I have yet to find a drive that doesn't.

Cons Review
g drive mini . Fail to be mount after working for a few minutes. After trying on and off and when it's seems to work, it ejects itself randomly! Computer error said it's ejected improperly!
Aple store replaced unit same prolbem . They were very nice, no hassels about exchange. I had it for a month.
Old unit lost connection 6 times this week. New unit was plugged into
with power down. Booted iMac did not show drive and drive
light fluttered steadily. Unplugged it and it appeared after.

Ran full backup and few hours later unit lost connection with message
about improperly dismounted drive.

Rebooting did not show drive. Reconnect and it's back. Another trip
to Aple store. I used to be Unix admin. I'm familiar with poor hardware.
