There's a lot to like... . The folks at QNAP have really done their homework. They've done the spit and polish needed so that I can hook up my wife's Mac and get Time Machine working. And they've done the job with an embedded linux distribution that lets me see just what the drive is doing (and optimize the backups of my linux-based laptops and servers). My only regret, which is not a defect of the product in any way, is that I didn't buy a larger configuration. It's so nice I want more!

If I had to do it all over again, I'd get at least the 5-bay unit for RAID 5 (one parity disk--good for a single disk failure) or the 6-bay unit and go for RAID 6 (two parity disks--good for single or double disk failures). As it is, the 4x 1TB drives I bought deliver 2.7TB after formatting with ext4 and RAID 5. I've just finished backing up every disk in the house and I've only used 40% of the capacity. Hopefully the remaining 60% will last until we are ready to refresh the drives with newer/larger hardware. And who knows, perhaps 4x 2TB drives will continue to meet our needs.

Another note: like so many products based on open source software, this one continues to innovate. When I connected the device it told me there was new firmware, and indeed there was! I flashed the 71MB download and am running the latest and greatest without problems.
QNAP Pro 4-Bay Desktop Network Attached Server TS-459 Reviews
Excellent product . If you are looking for a high performance NAS with a lot of options and services for your office, this one is an excellent choice. I was able to achieve 70 MB/s writing speed which is realty fast compared to other well known products.
QNAP Pro 4-Bay Desktop Network Attached Server TS-459 Opinions
Solid build good performance easy to use . Acquired the QNAP 459 Pro after many months of reading reviews and researching the NAS offerings. My needs are for storage of edited digital photos and streaming videos for the
home theater downstairs. Synology's 1010+ and QNAP 559 Pro were my first choices, with 5 bays and ample interfaces plus class leading performance according to [...].
Although the 459 is a 4 bay unit, its price, size, performance, and construction (metal trays vs plastic) won my vote. I loaded up 4 Seagate 1.5TB drives and had it running in one evening.
The NAS is netwroked to the main G-bit LAN on a Netgear 3700 router. WDTV live can access the network share without any issues over a wireless-n Dlink bridge. You do have to have some IP
networking knowledge to set it up. The discovery utility is excellent for the initial network setup and experimentation. The average home user may not need some of the features like the
add-on QPKG modules (web server, media server, etc), and the dual-gbit network ports (the router has to support port trunking). It is fast but transferring a 1.2TB backup drive over USB
took over 12 hours. I've had the unit for 2 days and have a lot of features to explore. The box has clean lines with an attractive brushed SS finish and useful status LEDs.
Its small enough to sit on my desktop. The admin web interface is fairly decent. Finally its quiet enough not to be noticed next to an iMac and a fanless tower PC.
pricy however ..it just works!! . sometimes it worth paying a a premium so things will just work ;-)

this is one of those things.

loaded it up with drives clicked the box to make a raid6 volume..and everything just worked
its been on ever since, no problems; I can write a 1.5Gbyte file at 70-80MBYTES/sec writes over a 1gig network! (reads are around 50mbytes/sec)
Perfect storage for my small VMWare enviroment . I get roughly 80MB/sec writes to this device. I am using port channeled 1Ge interfaces to a Cisco Catalyst switch. Hands down my best investment for my personal vSphere servers.
Qnap Nas Rock solid! . I love this nas, does everything I need and more. I use it for iscsi vm storage for xenserver vm's. also a plus are the video survalence, web, and mysql servers.

Cons Review
Qnap for Final Cut pro users . I was thrilled when our IT person told us about the benefits of using Qnap as a server for multiple computers to have the ability to pull video clips and edit simultaneously from multiple video editing systems. However after the first use I became very frustrated because Final Cut performs slower via the Qnap. Nothing is more frustrating than software slowing down the editing process. I'm going to give it another chance and I realize there is potential for the set up to work faster if I learn more about it (I hope) but I would not recommend it at this point for video production.
