Custom udev fixes problems with linux . This drive is very quiet, but it has problems getting mounted and staying mounted.
The good news is that I haven't lost any data. The bad news is that it is finicky. The degree of finickiness and the precise manifestations depend on the operating system and hardware used in conjunction with this device.
When used with Vista, installing Seagate DiskWizard (a free download), sometimes helped.
The drive comes formatted as one big ntfs partition. It worked better for me with Windows XP after I reformatted it with a FAT partition.
With Linux the drive stops working if you don't use it for a period of time, then you get I/O errors that you can correct with fsck. This problem can be completely corrected by making a custom udev. See wsms.wikiplanet.com/mediawiki/index.php/FreeAgent

Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 320 GB 3.5" USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Reviews
Best portable hard drive . This is the best portable hard drive ever!!!! I hooked it up to my older computer that had less than 150 megs of space left because I had all my digital photo stored there and I was able to transfer them all very quickly and easy giving my old computer new life, and I also am able to use it with my other two computers without any problem. I would reconmend this device to everyone who is looking for some quick extra disk space.

Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 320 GB 3.5" USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Opinions
Excellent for extra storage . We use one of these in the office, as well as out in the field.
In the office, we use it as a data backup device. No problems
there. eSata might be a better solution if you are storing
data that you need to access quick/frequently - we use this for emergency
backups in case of data loss on any one of the computers here so
fast transfers/access isn't an issue here.
Out in the field, we use one of these to transfer customers data
from old to new computers in the case where there is no network.
Zero complaints so far. This drive is quiet, and it works A+ for us.

Fantastic Solution . I had a desktop and I have a new laptop. My laptop has only a 60 GB HDD, and my desktop recently broke for good. So I had to get cables to be able to transfer the data from the drives to my laptop via USB. One problem: no space. So I went down to Best Buy and bought this FreeAgent 320 GB HDD. I followed the extremely simple setup instructions, and it was instantly recognized by my laptop and worked flawlessly throughout the transfers I needed. The only problem I have with this FreeAgent HDD is where did 20 GB go? Its a 320 GB HDD and I understand some space is lost in formatting, but 20 GB? Come on! Anyways, it really doesn't matter, I don't plan on using 300 GB anytime soon, and it was very cheap! Great solution to your storage needs! Very quiet too!
Super Easy Set Up . Installing this hard drive was super easy. Literally - got the hard drive out of the box, connected the electrical and USB wires, and my computer (Dell Dimension 9150 Windows XP) was able to see the drive right away! The hard drive is small enough to hide behind my computer monitor; therefore, it is not taking up much space on my desk. It runs quietly (no internal fan) and does not generate a lot heat. Only short coming of this hard drive is the speed in which it transfers the files from my computer to the hard drive. It is rather slow (uses USB 2.0) and lacks firewire for higher speed transfers (something to consider if you own a Mac). But I knew this from the product reviews I read, so it was not a surprise. Overall it is a great hard drive for the value of the money. I will find out about the durability as time goes on.
Easy to set up and use. . It takes all of 2 minutes to get this drive up and running. The only thing I don't like about it is that there is no on/off switch.
Seagate 320GB Hard Drive . I got this baby for 79.99, so there was really no losing, but I am very satisfied. I've only had it for a month or so, but it's been really reliable so far. Also, it comes with a 5year limited warranty, which I found to be one of the longest warranties among the many hard drives I considered purchasing. It's not very speedy, as far as transfering, but it does alright considering it's not firewire. So, I highly recommend it.

Terrific -- Plugged it in and good to go. I've had it a month and I have no complaints! I use it exclusively for archiving, backup, large pictures, etc.

Cons Review
flawed design . pros: the drive comes in a slick package, and is gorgeous. the side light fades in-and-out on drive reads. it is silent (more on this), and setup was very easy (just plug and play under XP).
cons: this drive is simply not reliable by virtue of its design. there is no fan to cool the drive. passive cooling is achieved by 2 metal plates enclosing the drive which is in turned encased by the plastic. as a result the drive overheats easily. after a few weeks, my drive developed "$MFT delayed write failed" even though delayed writes were disabled through the OS. it became unrecognizable. in order to access the drive to salvage data, I had to have a large table fan blow at the tiny vents to cool the drive. This made it stable enough to transfer data out of the drive. However, this is simply not acceptable.

Go for Western Digital Instead . I bought this external hard drive recently to back up videos I regularly transfer from my DVR (TiVo). It never worked very well. It had a lot of trouble connecting or being detected by my computer. It usually took about three or four tries to get the FreeAgent and my relatively new HP computer to communicate.
The Seagate finished off my patience and my willingness to ever own Seagate materials again after the drive effectively died and would not allow ANY computer I own to see it. It seemed like the drive had been contacted by a major magnet, but there is none like that anywhere in my house. I lost over 300 hours of videos and files I use for my job.
I replaced this drive with a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition external hard drive. It works flawlessly and is ALWAYS detected by my computer as soon as it is connected.
