Good drive but buyer beware: not the best bang for your buck . Love them or hate them, WD Passport drives are popular for many reasons. I use mine in and out of work, and it has yet to fail me.
PROS:
-Small, fits in a pocket: Great for travel when you want to conserve room but still keep tons of photos.
-Aesthetic quality: Almost a futuristic look/design.
-Adequate/Good throughput: Despite complaints from others about similar drives, I have experienced no noticeable slowdown.
-Plenty of storage space: If you need much more than this, just bring along your computer.
-Configurable/Partitionable Drive: Comes standard with FAT32, but that can be changed to avoid the 4GB file size limitations.
-Sturdiness - I've dropped mine a few times and it still works like a charm.
CONS:
-Price: Comparable drives can be found in a myriad of locations, from as low as $48 for a Scorpio drive to $66 for a Lacie drive. [as of 20 April 2010]
-Cabling: The documentation and description is a bit misleading since it's listed as having a USB cable, and not the mini-USB cable with which it connects. Not a big deal until you forget that cable and don't have one sitting on the desk (where the regular USB cables are in piles). Besides, if the intent is to move towards the newer technology, why stick with the deprecated male mini USB B-type and avoid the new micro standard?
Other reviewers have listed the cabling and plugs as faults on similar drives, but I just don't see it with this Passport. Sure, the mini USB is easier to pull out than the old-school USB, but so what. The drive's rubber feet - one on each corner - prevent drive dislodgement, and to get the cabling or drive to falter would require clumsiness or drive placement on the edge of a desk. On top of that, the Virtual CD of similar models is nowhere to be seen; there is, however, some proprietary software pre-loaded that can easily be deleted if the extra space is needed.
Overall, I'd say this drive is almost exactly what I expected.
