Synology DiskStation DS411+II, bundled with 4x1TB HDDs, is specifically designed for small and medium-sized businesses who need a high-performance, easy to manage, and full-featured network attached storage solution to centralize data backups, protect critical assets and share files across different platforms.

Still Reliable after 2 months of use . I have had this Diskstation DS411+II for two months with Seagate Barracuda 2GB Green harddrives installed. After 2 months, it is still running well. Even on the maximum "cool" mode, the DS411+II runs very quietly. I had also considered the DS1511+, but opted for this DS411+II since it was only for home use and did not need hot-swapping capability. The biggest benefit of this system is the good software support from Synology with a steady flow of firmware updates. The USB-printer server also works well with my Xerox printer as well.Be sure to keep the extra screws handy as you are installing the bare hard drives. In actually, I would give it 4.5 stars, since the Synology backup software would never work; however, I ended up using the backup software from Windows 7.Overall, this is a good purchase.

Synology DiskStation 4-Bay 4 TB (4x1 TB) USB 2.0 Network Attached Storage - DS411+II 4100 (Black) Reviews
A few bad units but I'm hopeful! . I'll start with the bad news. The topmost bay in my DiskStation must be empty when I power the unit on, or it won't turn on at all. Once it's on, I then have to hotplug the hard drive into that bay. This problem first started occurring a few months after purchase.
I set up an RMA with Synology, and after a bit of a delay, they reached out to me with a brand new unit to make up for said delay. Unfortunately, that brand new unit has a defective CPU fan! I asked if I could swap the fan out, but they warned me it was difficult. After a half hour of trying to disconnect the fan from the motherboard, I contacted them again and they're arranging to send me a third unit, and to pay for the returns of the first two.
Aside from the delay, customer service has been doing everything within their power to correct this situation. The good: it's very quick, reasonably silent, feature packed, and just all-around a fantastic piece of equipment. I have 4 drives at 3tb each in RAID 10, and it's just so fast. And I don't have to worry about running out of room anytime soon!
The web interface is absolutely brilliant and so modern, and the iOS apps are wonderful.I truly believe my hardware issues are isolated incidents, and that my two problems are merely coincidental. I previously had a DS209 from Synology and it was absolutely wonderful. No problems, was up for months at a time, with the only reboots due to software updates (which tend to be great). I've since resold it in favor of this model. I think this is a very well designed unit, and I'm impressed with Synology's customer service so far. Hopefully within a few days I'll have a flawless unit and will be happy again!

Synology DiskStation 4-Bay 4 TB (4x1 TB) USB 2.0 Network Attached Storage - DS411+II 4100 (Black) Opinions
Blazing fast . I put this together to replace my venerable Synology CS407 with DSM 2.3 on it. I used the slowest, cheapest 3TB hard drives I could find -- some 5400 RPM Hitachis. The performance difference is amazing. I was never really unsatisfied with my CS407 (just ran out of space), but the DS411+II is three times as fast to read and write *while I am backing up my CS407 to it at its full speed*. Also, the DSM 3.2 software is a huge improvement. With the higher performance, you can actually use this as an effective BitTorrent client as well. Older Synology NAS devices had BitTorrent capability, but due to memory size and CPU speed they would always download much slower than a real PC. The DS411+II has no such problem.Synology has put a lot more thought into their NAS devices than most of their competitors; they're kind of pricey but you get what you pay for. Things like if you enable remote access in DSM 3.2, it automatically configures port forwarding on your router so you don't have to. Things like Android software so you can use it as your own little Flickr/Picasa as well as a VPN endpoint. The price looks a lore more reasonable when you realize it's more of a really streamlined home/SOHO server than just a NAS.

Best I've found . I have been evaluating NAS for the home and the Synology brand is great. Too often the development stops on a product but not this one. Also, while they have "business" level products they don't ignore the home. Tried it with the beta DSM and install of Wordpress and other packages became much easier.
Great NAS . Easy to install, and I've never built a NAS before. I chose to utilize the WD RE4 1 TB HDs using the SHR configuration and it runs very fast. The Synology Assistant software is excellent with an easy to navigate and nice looking interface. I'm currently using this to back up my Macbook, Home PC and also stream media to a PS3 and the setup was fairly painless.
I was concerned that the device would be noisy, but it's very quiet.

A great NAS solution without breaking the bank . Works great with decent read/write speeds. Operating system and web interface is superb. Compatibility with Windows and OS X is great. My particular configuration for this is as a Raid 5 with four Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB Drives (ST2000DL003).
Drives definitely spin down with inactivity. Spin up time with these particular drives is a bit slow, but that was expected and not a show stopper.
The only hiccup I've had isn't with the NAS itself per se, but rather with the Mac OS X 10.6.7 upgrade that appears to have broken Samba/CIFS compatibility. Previous versions of Mac OS had no issue, but there is something causing problems when writing to the device after the update (the files are copied but left in a busy state, or copied and then are immediately deleted). However, this isn't really an issue as you can simply use AFP instead of SMB with Mac OS, which works without any issues and seems to be faster anyway.

Perfect Performance . I just received the DS411+II last Friday. I have to say that I am nothing short of impressed. I purchased it with 4 1.5T WD Caviar Black (WD1502FAEX) hard drives. It was pricey compared to other NAS boxes on the market. It took me a while to make the decision to buy and outfit with the Caviar Black vs. the Caviar Green. However, I am not sorry that I did. Here is a summary:
The PROs:
1. Went together as shown in Quick Reference Guide with no issues.
2. Easy to format; set user accounts and priviledges. I did not use the quick install. I formated using custom option and set it to RAID 5. Gave me 4.02TB available out of 5.44 TB possible.
3. Seamless operation with MAC OSX (Snow Leopard v10.6.8)
4. Faster than I would have thought. Sustained throughput of 10.6 MegaBytes/sec. This was based on moving 300GB of data to it. (I think I did that calculation correctly!). I am sure this is also due to the drives that I used. I think the WD Green Series would be a little slower.
5. QUIET!! I have it in my bedroom and can't hear it. It is a small bedroom.
6. DSM is pretty intuitive and powerful. It allows you to easily manage the system. I love how it gives you status and health of each drive in the unit.
The CONS:
The only con that I can comment upon at this time is the users guide. There is SO much information in it; it is hard to navigate. I think that if Synology organized it differently; it would flow better. At this time, the users guide is broken into chapters. The chapters are not really organized in a sequence that a user would follow if they are setting up the system for the first time. I had to jump around a lot to find what I needed.
All in all, a strong buy! You won't be sorry.

Well thought out design )hardware and software) . We have started using Synology products at work and the sysadmins can not stop raving about how easy the integration into our environment was. Software is very intuitive. Would definitely give these a try over buffalo products.
