Outstanding portable disk drive! . I wanted a portable drive that would store all my photos, documents, music, etc. that would stand up to some minor abuse and possible water exposure. I wasn't looking for a standard backup disc that uses a proprietary software program, as I may not have access to that program after some disaster. This drive is meant to survive a major disaster where I lost all computers, through flood or major earthquake. It installs easily and transfers at nearly its rated 30 MB/S. I have confidence that should I lose all, I will still still have my digital files to recover at some later point. This drive easily survives 3 ft drops on hard surfaces and is water resistant. I feel very secure in knowing that all my important files are being kept separate from my computers in a robust drive with a small form factor. It is everything I expected.

Wanted yellow but this was 40 bucks cheaper for the same size! . this is an awesome clumsy proof tech tool for anyone that is hard on products, consistently drops stuff in puddles, or like I did today let it fall out of the bed of truck while I was driving off. my neighbor was behind me, picked it up and gave it to me when he got home today. still worked. this is ME-proof which is great.
however, 1st one I bought was DOA.
I also wish that the usb cable supplied that connects to the drive (you always have what you need) had plastic covers or lids attached to the cord that can be removed when using the cord, and replaced when the drive is inactive. I think it would help keep the cable from getting trashed especially if the reason it got trashed was the bits of rock and mud that got inside the prongs when itfell from yourtruck onto the ground into water

1. It works straight out of the box. Nothing else needed.
2. Tough rubberized finish protects from rasonable drops.
3. Short USB cable clips to the perimeter of the drive so it is easily found.
4. Rubberized cap for the USB port making it water resistant.
5. Bright yellow color makes it easy to find in the "bottom of the bag".

what all portable hard drives should be . I recently (past 6 months) purchased another 500 Gb portable hard drive and found that after putting it in and out of my laptop case, carrying it around, etc. the enclosure was starting to interfere with the hard drive functions. This unit works well and is rugged enough to be portable--why have a portable hard drive that can't take some abuse?
Great for travel . I have a laptop and a backpack which goes with me everywhere. I keep all of my files+movies back'd up on a harddrive which I carry with me. The problem was they kept banging around and breaking. This one can withstand some abuse. It's 640gb and cost only around $150! It was a great buy. Really happy with it.

I like the rubber coating because it won't slip-slide around on the desktop. I have not tried dropping it from 50 feet or submerging it in water yet, but Its quiet, and seems to stay cool when plugged in for extended periods of time. This is NOT your wimpy little fragile, plastic drive, that you can't hold onto. When I received mine, I ordered another one the same day. Awesome! Take-anywhere drive. Fits your cargo pocket and take your data with you wherever you go. Handy slot for the USB cable to wrap around the drive, so it won't be at home when you aren't. Great bargain on Amazon ! This is one tough puppy !

Durable Drive . This thing is pretty much what you're looking for if you're looking for a durable portable drive that you could even use outside (probably even in the rain, no less). MIL-SPEC DURABILITY! Great product.
Cons Review
Twice returned . I returned this hard drive after eight months because it twice failed to be recognized by my laptop. Each time, I tried to repair it and it refused to mount. So I wiped it cleaned and started over again. The third time, I sent it back to A-Data and they replaced it with a 640-GB hard drive. This one lasted a month. The RA department said that it's because I'm unplugging it before I unmount it, but that was not the case in any of the failures. I'm planning on buying from a different company. This one is totally unreliable.
Maybe I got the lemon.. . Maybe I just got the lemon, but mine locked up three different computers with compatible operating systems and USB ports.. A few files would transfer, then it went into limbo requiring a shut-down and re-boot, over and over again. It is a really cool looking drive, it's a nice size, it definitely seems rugged, I just wish mine worked as well as the other reviewers' did. Function is the first priority, so despite high marks on every other attribute, I give it one star..
