good for newbies but I wanted more . I'm running a 3x1.5TB RAID 5 on it, and after a month it's still working flawlessly. Never tried simulating drive failure (I trust smallnetbuilder.com for that:-). I don't use Windows; clients are Linux and MacOS and NFS is my preferred network protocol. Setup for SMB might be straightforward (never bothered yet), but for NFS there's nothing to help you. You've got to know that userids must be preserved across machines, including the NAS itself. By manually editing those details I was able to get a working setup for NFS clients, but then the usernames have vanished from the NAS. I ended up more or less with a limited Unix server that I have to administer (not for the typical user, though). I should try to install a chrooted Gentoo system in the RAID5 (as opposed to the original system on flash memory), since then I would have an almost full-blown Linux server to pilot, and not the crippled Linux that is available originally.
I chose this model due to two reasons: smallest volume for a 5-drive enclosure and lowest power consumption, and it delivers. If power and size weren't my main concern, I would stick to the Netgear ReadyNAS 6-drive unit, since it brings the added benefit of working with different-sized drives simultaneously (a very simple trick to due with raid on Linux). To the best of my research, this is the only product that does this and thus is more in line with a typical small workgroup scenario (you don't have to trash all old drives at once to get more logical space).
