This USB 2.0 External SATA Hard Drive Enclosure supports the latest generations of hard drive storage, and allows automated data/file backups at the touch of a button. The HDD enclosure connects to a host computer through USB 2.0 and supports 3.5in Serial ATA (SATA, SATA II, SATA III) hard drives, providing a cost-effective way to take advantage of the high capacity offered by the newest SATA hard drives. The enclosure includes highly configurable software that lets you pre-define backup tasks - allowing for fast, automated backup and archiving of valuable data when the One Touch Backup feature is activated. The External hard drive enclosure features a built-in 40mm fan that re-distributes the heat build-up generated as a result of typical drive operation. This feature is especially important for larger volume storage, and faster "spinning" drives (i.e 7200 RPM), as it can help keep drives running cooler, which can preserve data integrity and the drive's lifespan by reducing the chances of premature failures. Constructed of durable but lightweight aluminum, this external storage solution is an ideal add-on for maintaining data integrity, mobilizing data, or convenient backup.

A champagne enclosure for a Caviar drive . Western Digital makes great high-capacity hard drives. Western Digital makes lousy external enclosures for them. When my WD My Book Home external hard drive started flaking out and wouldn't back up my iMac and MacBook Pro with Time Machine, I thought all the saved data was lost. I took it apart to see what might be done to rescue the data and found a fatal design flaw. The USB/FireWire interface unit is attached to the 500Gb Caviar drive, absorbing much of the heat generated by the drive. Over time, the heat fried the electronics.

I perused Amazon's selection of drive enclosures and chose this one for its built-in cooling fan. A few Free Super Saver Shipping Days later, the enclosure arrived and the installation went without a hitch, requiring only a Phillips screwdriver. The StarTech enclosure comes with a full-size USB cable, not a mini-USB as on the My Book. I wouldn't be surprised if shoving all that data through a mini-USB interface is another factor in generating excess heat.

When I first fired up the drive, it still wouldn't connect to Time Machine, but after a couple repair runs in Disk Utility, it's purring along nicely and hasn't missed a single scheduled backup.

The enclosure's fan emits a quiet drone that's no more objectionable than the sound of the drive in the original My Book's plastic enclosure, which relied on convection alone for cooling and provided no sound insulation. The aluminum exterior is barely warm to the touch and never gets as hot as the My Book's enclosure. If plastic is hot, that's a bad thing because plastic is an insulator, not a heat conductor.

Very Satisfied . I've had cheaper drive enclosures in the past so it was nice to handle one that is obviously so well made as this one. It is well worth the extra money.
StarTech.com 3.5-Inch USB to SATA External Hard Drive Enclosure with One Button Backup (SAT3510U2B) - Silver Opinions
Fan option is great One-Button Backup not useful . Having a convenient switch for the fan is nice. After inserting my SATA hard drive, I left the enclosure on without a fan for about an hour, and the thing definitely heated up (not because I wanted to try it, but because I accidentally left the fan off). After turning on the fan, the hard drive eventually cooled down significantly (while still being on the whole time). Conclusion: Fan works and does make a difference. But if you're not transferring much (not leaving it on), and you prefer a quiet enclosure, then you have the option of leaving the fan off.

The reason for not 5 stars is because I'm paying more for the One-Button Backup option with its software, which I don't find very helpful. It basically compresses all my files (which is good to conserve disk space, but not good when I want quick access to my files). I rather just back up everything manually.
so far so good . have been using it for a month, so far it is Ok, gets warm though.the fan is tiny and I do not know if it really helps. the enclosure is made of aluminum.
