Nice package good design - runs a little warm . This LaCie drive for use with the Mac Mini is a perfect match. The excellent (white) cables of different lengths work very well for various installations. The Mac Mini sits on top of this drve and is designed to allow a clearance between the two for ventilation. I'm glad they are thinking of ventilation because the LaCie unit does run fairly warm. There is a compromise between fan noise and how much cooling you expect to get. This unit is very quiet running and although warm, does not appear to overheat. The hard drive is fast and functions flawlessly although I am not using LaCie's backup software which was included. The additional hub inputs for USB and Firewire are convenient. I would buy this unit again.
LaCie 250 GB Mini External Hard Drive and Hub (301039U) Reviews
Quiet . I like this disk. It sits under my mini-mac and it is very quite.
I would like to have more space on the disk, but the reviews of the 500GB
say its very loud.
LaCie 250 GB Mini External Hard Drive and Hub (301039U) Opinions
Inconsistent Performance . It seems like I can't get both the hard drive and the built in USB hub to function consistently at the same time. I have it plugged into an Apple Airport Extreme so that I can have access to the drive on my network and have a couple of printers and another external drive also available. At times, all of this functions very well. At other times, only the main drive is accessible while the peripherals are not. Other times, I can print wirelessly but can't access the drive. I've tested each peripheral by itself directly plugged into the Airport, and they all function consistently. I think the LaCie drive/USB hub just isn't perfectly designed.
Good drive with Apple's Backup software . Needing both a Fireware & USB Hub and large capacity external hard drive, I saw & bought this drive from an Apple store, as I did not see it in the Mac catalogs any more, and thus thought LaCie had discontinued it and I was snatching up a nice, but discontinued item. Buying from Amazon would have saved money & sales tax, but other than that, the LaCie 250 GB Mini External Hard Drive & Hub serves its purposes well for my wife's iMac (Intel Core Duo chip).

Using Apple's Backup software, which is free with a .Mac membership, the LaCie flawlessly wakes from it's sleep by the timed, daily Backup backups of the iMac's main 250 GB hard drive. While it is so quiet it can be difficult to tell whether it is on or not, it really doesn't matter as it quickly wakes if it is accessed and the Firewire and USB 2.0 devices work flawlessly whether it is awake or not.

LaCie also thoughtfully includes short & long Firewire & USB cables; a nice touch in this day & age of idiotic cost cutting moves. Despite the drive taking up very little room on my wife's desk, she (unwisely) continues to use it as a coffee coaster. While it seems very well made, I did not find anything touting its ability to be doused with coffee.

This is a great external drive & Firewire-USB 2.0 hub at a good price!
LaCie 250 GB Mini External Hard Drive and Hub . Good product at a reasonable price. Found it for a couple of dollars less but the no hassle of buying from Amazon made it an easy choice. Unit works well. We partitioned it to do back up plus 125 GB if additional storage space on my wife's Mini
Perfect external hard drive . I was looking for an external hard drive that was compatible with my iBook G4 and discovered that LaCie products work brilliantly with Macs. The hard drive is super petite and is aesthetically pleasing. I am not using it in conjunction with the Mac Mini, but I could easily see how they would fit perfectly together. In general, I keep the hard drive turned off until I need it but if I were to leave it on it is extremely quiet (to the point I have to ask myself if it is really turned on). The product comes with various length cables, which I appreciated since the small length was perfect for me to just plug and play without a mess of extra long cables to clutter things up. I can't comment on the USB hub since I haven't tried it, but again, I was only looking for an external hard drive to back up a few things. But I'm sure it would be handy for a multitasking user. Overall, I love my LaCie Mini and how easy it was to use. I just wish I had more things to back up so I could access it all the time.
Great product . Fits perfectly with mac mini, looks sleek, whisper quiet, and most importantly, it works with mac os seamlessly. Plus, it has lots of USB and FW ports, so it remedies one of the elements lacking in the mini.
LaCie 250 GB Mini External Hard Drive and Hub . My purpose for buying this product was very simple: I just needed additional space to store music. The transition could not have been any smoother. I plugged it in to the FireWire port and I was up and running! It operates in virtual silence from atop my PowerMac G4. I have not had occasion to utilize the "hub" aspect of it yet, but I'm not concerned about the prospect of doing so--I believe it'll be just fine!
Pick pick pick.... Great unit marred by dumb little things. . Here's a few gripes, most of which are nitpicking cosmetic issues. The aluminum and white plastic case are a near perfect match for the Mini. If you look really hard, the aluminum is just the slightest shade darker and the bottom edge of the aluminum band is slightly rounded, unlike the crisp hard edges of the Mini. But these are minor quibbles hardly worth mentioning. Much more annoying is having this big honk'n ugly logo on the front. Another cosmetic annoyance is the power indicator. It is in the same location as on the Mini, maintaining the overall symmetry, but it is noticeably larger in diameter, is not the same shade of white (bluish not neutral), and light from the indicaor leaks out the bottom of the case onto the table through the cooling vents on the bottom. One surprise, however. I expected not to like the looks of the intentional gap formed between the LaCie and the Mini. None of the other Mini-look-alike external drives have this feature but instead fit flush to the Mini's case. But the cooling slot nicely mirrors the CD slot on the front of the Mini so it actually looks like a natural extension. And I have no doubt that having the extra cooling provided by this gap is a good idea.

A few things to be aware of regarding the hub itself. Having a set of FireWire and USB ports on the sides of the unit make for convenient temporary connection of devices. But I, for one, would not be inclined to use these side facing ports for devices routinely left connected. Instead I'd want to connect 'permanent' peripherals in the back to control the wire clutter. The good news is that when you add this hub to your system, you will still have a net of 4 rear facing USB ports and you'll gain 3 more on the side of the LaCie for quick access for thumb drives, cameras, and the like. But you'll be *trading* your one rear FireWire port on the back of your Mini for two FireWire ports on the side of the LaCie. Bad news if you want to keep a dedicated FireWire device connected to your Mini *and* plug in transient FireWire peripherals.

A set of really short USB and FireWire cables are included for connecting up the LaCie to the Mini. Bravo! Too bad the cables have to cross each other to reach their respective ports on the LaCie, making it just a little more difficult to manage all the wires on the back of both devices. And the one free USB port on the back of the LaCie gets stuck inbetween these two inbound cables making it just a little harder to get to.

The hard drive in the LaCie is indeed very quiet although not virtually silent as the Mini's own internal drive. But the LaCie will automatically go to sleep after a few minutes so what little noise it makes happens only when it is actively being used.

I know, pick, pick, pick. But 5 stars should only be given to products that are perfect or very near perfect. In retrospect I might have been a little happier with just the plain hard drive (300998U) and a seperate dedicated port replicator, placed away from the Mini.

Cons Review
Eratic Behavior . This product has the potential to be a very useful means of backup and storage for large amounts of data, music, and photos. However, I have found the performance of the hard drive to be very erratic. Sometimes it will mount on the Mac Mini desktop, and sometimes it will not. Sometimes it will simply disappear after mounting. The Mac Mini System Profiler will sometimes recognize the device as a LaCie drive, even though the drive does not mount. Other times, it will see only an "Unknown Device." At all times however, the product performs properly as a hub, both for Firewire and USB devices. The lack of operating consistency is a very serious shortcoming and a source of much frustration. I do not recommend this product.
