Impressive Write Speeds . USB thumb/flash drives are like the mystery candy in a box of chocolates. You never really know how one is going to perform until you buy and test it out. Even units within the same model from the same maker can vary. I have two PNY Micro Swivel Attaché 4 GB USB 2.0 flash drives, one of which is fairly average as far as write speeds, but tends to be peppier (18-20 mb/sec) in read speed. The other gets sad write speeds and less than average read speeds. But what I really liked about those was the sturdiness of construction, and the tiny form factor. I wore them on my ID, without extra weight, and no one knew I had one until I used it. They were metal, withstood abuse like few other drives (up to and including the spin cycle on the washer), and are my daily workhorses. This drive, the Silicon Power Touch 810, I purchased because of it's capacity, physical size, lack of a cap to get lost or get in the way, and the appearance. I lean towards the smallest drives I can find that are still functional as far as handling. At 1 and 1/8" long by just over 1/2" wide by 3/16" thick, it's not as tiny as the PNY Micro Swivel. It is however extremely light, being mostly plastic, and comes with a permanently attached double strand of thin ball-chain as a lanyard. One con there: How do you attach it to anything... it's a closed loop. The business end extends from the plastic body by pushing up on a grooved button on the bottom face. I don't know that I would subject it to the punishment that I've dealt out to the metal PNY drives. It's so... plastic. What I was surprised by though was the speed. The read speeds on this hovered around 28 MB/s, and the write speeds, around 18MB, but varied. Even then, it consistently blows the doors off the other drives I have such as the PNY swivels, a Sony Micro Vault Click 8 GB USB 2.0, and the Kingston Digital 8 GB USB 2.0 Datatraveler, 2nd Gen.. It is also more expensive than any of those drives.It's not going to appeal to guys I suppose, what with the Swarovski crystal set in the end, but perhaps they won't notice? You can download the SPWidget tools from the manufacturer's Web site, but I generally don't have use for those. I did try them this time around. It's supposed to contain an encryption and backup tool, but the installation didn't recognize that I had a Silicon-Power Touch drive installed, even though that's what Windows was reporting it as. If that's important to you, it might be a deal killer. I tend to wipe whatever comes on USB flash drives and install Portable Apps, so I didn't mind. As far as price goes, you may want to wait for it to come down a bit. It's not the cheapest USB thumb drive I've purchased, or perhaps the sturdiest, but it is the fastest so far.
