Worked right out of the box . I purchased this USB drive to backup my Olive Musica music server. I booted the drive, plugged it into the Musica, and it was immediately recognized as an external drive. Same results when I plugged it into my computer. The unit's whirring is audible (barely. I would rate the unit as extremely quiet, quieter than any other hard disk except for the Musica's), but since I can turn it off when I'm not backing up, or store it in the stereo cabinet, that's not an issue. The manual is simple and clear, and the accompanying software easy to use - although I did not use much of it.

Good buy . I've been using one of these for my mp3 collection for about a year and a half. It really is quiet and is so far dependable (knock on wood). All hard drives are bound to fail some day, but thus far I really like this and have had no problems. It has a power switch, which many other models lack, so hopefully by keeping it shut off when not in use it'll have its life prolonged for a few more years.

Excellent... . Well, except that you can't turn the drive sleep function off...

If you don't hit it often enough, there is a lag as the drive spins up and is ready to function.

Not a huge issue except if you don't need it to sleep on you. The lag is rather long but in the sceme of things, not an eternity but I did have some issues with it sleeping and now use the drive for backup rather than data acquisition like I planned...

Still, it's quiet, fast (when not asleep) and easy to place on the desktop...

EXCELLENT external hard drive . I bought the seagate 400GB external hard drive from Amazon and I love it. It backs-up fast and is extremely user friendly. It comes with the needed back-up software of which many other external drives do not. With 400 GB I have as much memory space as I will ever need. I would highly recommend this product.
good back up drive . so esay to use, one button back up did all my files and now sits in a safe place for use every 6 months or so, great in the event lighting or other failures as you'll always have a good backup ...
additional storage . I do not spend much time using my computer, but wanted space to store all

the albums of pictures dating back many years. The Seagate external drive

fills the bill. It is very easy to use, as is said user friendly.

Cons Review
Shopping for a different brand . I bought the 250g version and it died within a month. Seagate replaced it. I have had that one for 2 years now and much of my data has disappeared. I am looking for a bigger drive to backup new data and replace the Seagate.
HORRIBLE SUPPORT . Seagate's support is little to none. In fact it's some of the worse support I've ever experienced. If you purchase any products from them make sure you get an extra plan for full replacement and if your data is mission critical go with another brand. Dont go through what I did.

There are also issues with this product and Vista. There is a sleep function that cannot be controlled. When you go to save you have to wait 60 to 90 seconds for the hard drive to wake up from sleep mode. If you do a lot of saving or access the drive a lot, it's not a reasonable solution.

Shiny black small and decent performance . Measured 13.1 MB/s write and 25.7 MB/s read. The drive is a really nice size, glossy black in color and has a slight indentation towards the lanyard end to make gripping easier.

High Quality Low Price . I bought two of these cool little critters for my XBOX360 which now supports flash memory. Instead of a large hard drive that I wouldn't have use for. There are two XBOX360's in my house, one for my son and one for me. When we want to play together on one of the systems we can easily plug in our own flash drive and have both of our gamer profiles and save data. It's perfect for being able to pack your gaming data to play with others somewhere else. Because of the cost I was expecting something cheaply made but was pleasantly surprised that they are of great quality. Also, the xbox does a little self test to let you know if your flash drive will be advanced enough to meet it's high performance standards and these little babies passed with flying colors. Fast speed, built well, even cool looking. I am definitely pleased with this and would recommend it to anyone.
Good initial performance . I purchased this device a couple weeks before Christmas, and it works well so far. I especially like its sleek appearance and feel.

bought one happy with it buying another... . I bought one of these through amazon from ANTonline 11/2010. It got to me as promised, and works well. Seems fairly fast compared to my other thumb drives, and no problems. I'm not big on thumb drives with caps, but this drive is small and sturdily-made and I took that trade-off.

I'm happy enough with it that I'm buying another... and amazon/antonline still has the best price on it.

Cons Review
Both arrived unformatted did not hold format then died. . Both of these Memorex Mini Travel Drives 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drives arrived (in original retail plastic packaging) unformatted, but could be detected, on three computers using Windows XP Pro or Home. And of course the promised software was not on them, but could be downloaded. One formatted the first time; tests show file-write-speeds 8 MB/Sec and file-read-speeds 15 MB/Sec. The second drive took nine attempts to format, using various methods, trying both FAT32 and NTFS, on three computers. Then I could not delete a file from the problematic second drive; still testing it to help with QC troubleshooting. This is the first time I had any problems with Memorex flash drives - usually they are very good - but these are the first 16 GB drive I've tried.

Three days later: both drives lost their formatting after only three days of sitting idle; data on them cannot be retrieved; they now cannot be identified, accessed or formatted (by Windows XP SP3 Pro or Home, or by command-line format) on three computers. Third-party software cannot access or format them. I'm a computer tech, and have tried every method I know. They are probably from one bad batch, as my other Memorex drives (8 GB and smaller) work very well.
Cannot format this pen drive!! . I am very disappointed with this item. I use windows 7 and even though it says it is compatible with the software, every time I try to format it for use, windows gives me an error code, and won't accept this pen drive. I do no recommend it!

Fast . Got this because I had an older SanDisk that has been a real workhorse. The old one is still working fine, but I wanted another one and a newer model. This one claimed to be fast, and it also said it has software encryption.

Both claims are correct. It is about 50% faster than my old USB drive on writing, and very fast on reading. I copied a 42 MB movie in about 4 seconds, vs 6 seconds for the old drive.

Also did a test of copying a folder with 100 files (pics and movies) that was 1.2 GB in size. Worked well there too. Took about 2 or 3 minutes, which is quite reasonable.

Erase was lightning fast for that folder (which is expected, I guess, since it was only 100 objects).

Originally, the encryption took much longer than the above times (like 5x or more). But the software just updated itself this evening and now it is quite usable - even fast. I was able to encrypt movies and folder with pictures in times comparable to those above for the unencrypted cases. About 1.5x longer only. I think that's well worth it if you have sensitive data.

Just remember you may need to update the software - since they won't have the new faster version on it for a while, I'm guessing.

I should mention that some things that are not perfect:
a) The thing feels a bit cheap - lightweight plastic
b) It is sometimes a little tricky to push the button to open it.

But who cares. I just want it to be fast at reading and writing files. And it does that very well. I'm not worried about the look and feel.

It does what it should. . When it comes to portable memory San Disk is the only name I trust. From the cards in my camera to flash drives. Little guy does what it is supposed too. Construction feels kind of cheap but it does make for a light drive. I'm sure I'll get a lot of good use out of it. I'm happy. I can definately tell the difference between a regular drive and the "Ultra" drive, not blazing faster but it is faster.
Good Flash Drive . No problems works great. I keep it on keychain good mounting hole. It realy looks like a thumb. I would recommend the product.

Rocking USB Guitar Bling! . OK, so my teenage daughter said, "Dad, I really want a flash drive to carry around my stuff, but they are all so BORING. Can you get me a cool flash drive?" Having never thought much about the style of a flashdrive, I had no idea. Since my daughter is an avid guitarist, I figured maybe there are guitar themed flash drives. Delivers what it promises . I bought the Fusion Drive as soon as it was available from JR. I'm really impressed with the ease of set up, the utility of the drive and software, and all around look of the drive. The instructions are clear and the setup wizard takes you through how to set up a dynamic dns, how to set up your router, and all of the other details that would usually require some real technical know how. The important thing is to follow the instructions closely.

One very important think to keep in mind when setting up the drive: if you have VOiP, make sure the internet phone device is hooked up to your router; usually companies ask you to hook the phone to your cable modem, and then your router to the phone; this makes port forwarding unusable. So other than this minor reconfiguring of your internet connection, everything works seamlessly.

I imagine the interface and the look (and the choices of looks) will develop over time, but I have to say I've been very impressed with how well everything has been working (I've tried out the software from home from a remote location), and most important, how stable everything is. I'm doing everything from a Mac, and I always worry if enought testing has been done to ensure Mac compatibility, and so far, everything's been fine. I also like the fact that Maxtor has included USB 2.0 ports for future expansion. It's a steep price, but I recomment this drive to everyone in the market for a NAS drive.

Great shared drive for the home. . I plugged this into my router, changed the workgroup name and used the web-based interface to adjust the settings. It has been running like a champ. Another reviewer discussed the software; I didn't try it. Most hard disk manufacturer's software isn't very good. Our family can share pictures, videos and move documents all around the house.

Dynamite Simple NAS . Well this little box delivers. First off I haven't, nor probably won't use it for as a Web Server. I've set it up solely as a NAS device. It more than rocks for the $135 (after tax &shipping) I paid to meet my singular usage of it.

First off if you don't know how to setup a small network you shouldn't be buying a NAS for storage. They normally aren't very easy to setup especially if your using RAID. After setup they are normally No to Low maintenance. The Fusion setup is very easy for a NAS and I don't believe it will require much maintenance if any. I had the firewall/antivirus problem mentioned by another reviewer, but that should be expected when setting up any networking or web interacting software. After that it was smooth sailing.

It's isn't quiet but not near as loud as most simple NAS's. The add -on USB ports so far work well with my Seagate Freeagent Drives. I had to reformat to these drives to FAT32, but well worth it to clear up desk and cable clutter. Easy and near instant data access is a huge plus also.

I'll certainly will be buying more of these!

Cons Review
Fusion software is horrible. Better to just buy an add-on drive. . The Fusion installation CD didn't detect the drive until I turned off my Windows Firewall. Of course, this wasn't mentioned anywhere in the setup guide. Don't try to load a directory with more than a few high resolution (5 megapixel or more) photos, or it will take FOREVER to generate the thumbnails. The drag-and-drop popup Java applet file import is very slow to import (even over Gigabit ethernet), and dropping a folder into it doesn't create the folder with the files underneath it; instead, it just puts all the files into the root directory. VERY DISAPPOINTED in what had the potential to be a useful product. If you have 1-2 Megapixel photos or small documents, in just a few small directories, maybe this will work for you, but for $700? You can do better.
Seagate Defective Products . I will never buy a Seagate product again.
The software is horrific. Once everything was setup, the drive failed out losing all the data that was copied over.
I have nothing nice to say about this company(Seagate) and Philips.
Both seem to rip off consumers regularly.

Underrated Product with great results . Background: I currently use a 16 GB OCZ Diesel USB flash drive, which is great except for the speed. I was researching the newer generation flash drives and they are broken up by tiers (quality) for USB 2.0. There are 4 tiers from slow, medium, fast and fastest. The OCZ drive is Medium quality in writing about 8 MB/sec and reading up to 22 MB.

Now for Mushkin, they are a great company who specializes in memory modules. I've had some great high end gaming RAM from them so I absolutely trust their products. This flash drive is VERY affordable and is the FAST tier, not fastest. The write speed is 18 MB/sec and reads about 33 MB. This is by far the best flash drive I have owned (out of 5) at a reasonable price. The OCZ was 2x the price but I bought that when 16 GB capacity was the max. Go and get this drive!

The fastest flash drive of the three that I have owned. . Purchased the Mushkin 16GB Flash Drive a few weeks ago after weighing it against others made by Sandisk and Patriot. A little bit of research really endeared Mushkin to me, as they appear to be an American company that specializes in only producing computer-based memory modules and drives. As advertised, this little flash drive is lightning fast, and it is hard to believe that such a little device stores 16GBs! I like it so much I bought an 8GB drive as well for a family member, and that one rocks too. Will likely by my future flash drives from this manufacturer!

Speedy drive made by an American Company . I have had this drive for a while now and figured I would review it for the rest of you guys on the brink of deciding to buy one. I mainly use it on my xbox for game saves now because everything I used it for before is done wirelessly now. The transfer speeds are fast, the drive is small, and very sturdy. I would post speed tests on this drive but I can not as the data on there I would like to keep and the program I used to test it deletes all of that data. This drive is well worth every penny though as it is American made and by a company whose RAM I have used before which is also fast and works great. Mushkin makes a great product and stands behind it. No issues with the company or its products. Buy it!
They don't get any faster than this one with USB 2.0 . With "ATTO Disk Benchmark" (download it, it's free), I got about 32 MB/s Read, and 17 MB/s Write (see image at top). Your speeds may vary depending on the power of your PC. Until USB 3.0 becomes more common, this is one of the fastest USB 2.0 flash drives you can buy.Not all flash drives are created equal. I've bought and tested a lot of flash drives, and my number one priority is speed. Forget about, SanDisk, Kingston, and a lot of the other major name brand flash drives, they can be horribly slow at reading and writing compared to the Mushkin Enhanced drives.If you are looking for a speedy flash drive, this one is a better choice than about 95% of all the others you have to choose from.
Perfect . I really have no complaints that would warrant a lesser number of stars. Right off the bat the only reason why anyone would complain is the cap. Yet another device where you must remove the cap in order to use it. Easily lost, yes, but I have never lost any caps in nearly a decade of using usb drives. So I wouldn't call this a negative thing. It would be nice yes but not important to me. Also no lanyard but I just used one of the many ones I've gotten at shows and conventions I've been to. I don't have any detailed technical read outs but it just plain works. I use it for training videos and movies mainly to tranfer from once machine to another. Everything is quite zippy enough for me. Overall an excellent device and 16GB is the perfect size.
Almost perfect . A few years ago, a flash drive was no small investment. But over the last few years, flash drives have become like nice pens - you've probably got a few lying around, they're inexpensive, they're nice little gifts, and they all do the exact same thing.

The majority of consumers don't understand the difference between flash drives, besides the storage capacity and general appearance. I realized there was one dramatic and often overlooked difference as soon as I plugged in the Mushkin - transfer speed.

Transfer rates on this drive are fantastic - far better than any other thumb drive I've used.

The shell of the drive is thick and feels fairly sturdy, with a convenient loop for a keyring and an ergonomic indentation near the back end to make pulling it out easier. There aren't any moving parts, so it's resistant to the usual wear and tear that retractable or flip-open flash drives are prone to, but it's got one serious flaw that's keeping me from giving it a perfect score...

The USB plug on the drive is covered by a thick, clear plastic cap that snaps on and off when you need to plug it in or put it away. The cap isn't loose and stays on just fine, but while the drive is plugged in, there's no way to attach the cap to the drive - you just have to set it down and remember to put it back on when you're done using the drive. So far I've still got it, but I can see it easily being knocked behind a desk, lost in a pile of paperwork, or just left at a job site or public computer by accident. And without the cap, I think the USB plug would fill up with pocket lint and other gunk pretty quickly. It would have been nice if they'd included spare caps, or some way to attach the cap to the drive itself. I'm tempted to stick some velcro on both pieces as a solution, but that just seems ghetto.

Other than that small design caveat, you really can't beat the price-to-performance ratio on this drive. It is screaming fast.
Excellent USB Drive . Excellent and reliable. Have had no issues at all with this and like it very much. Also get excellent transfer speeds consistently with it unlike some of my other flash drives.
Just right . It's really fast, small, sleek, sturdy, and it holds lots of storage space. what else do you need? Highly recommended.
Fast good . Nice drive, performs very well. Wish it didn't have a removable cap (like my old Sandisk Cruzer) but that's a minor thing.
What can i say? it works . Works as it should. Sure wish it came with a tighter fitting cap. I can already see the day the cap goes missing.

Excellent value . I have owned this drive for two months now and it has given me no problems whatsoever. Coming pre-formatted in NTFS a plus. Use it mainly for backups and large video files, handles backups from the Win7 Pro interface seamlessly. If one keeps in mind that this is an electronic device and not a football, I think it will give long and unobtrusive service.
A general note - when will manufacturers begin putting the plug prongs on the ends of their adapters, or use a swivel prong arrangement? Sure would make using devices a lot more "friendly" when using a power strip.

I trust Buffalo hard drive system and I have another Buffalo NAS(Network Attached Storage device).
Very Satiffied with it.

Cons Review
I should have bought a name brand. . The only problem I have with this drive is the Buffalo software that comes with the drive. I still have not been able to use there software and when I called there contact support number the person I spoke to knew less then I did. I use Norton Ghost for my backups.

FANTASTIC SMALL USB 3.0 DRIVE . I just opened this drive, hooked it to my Apple iMac, opened Time Machine -- and the mac reformatted the drive and started the 450gb back up. It took about 4 hours to complete (and i was using USB 2) and now I am safe, should anything ever happen to my mac.

The physical size of this drive is very impressive..... less that 2 decks of cards. Love that there is no power cord, just the USB. Yes, the usb cable is rigid and short, but that is an easy fix.
The drive is silent, has a small light to show activity.

I would highly recommend this drive to anyone needed inexpensive, compact, efficient back-up.


Remember... there are only two kind of computer users out there: one that have lost data and ones that are about to. BACK UP!!!!

Fast and effective . I saw a lot of bad reviews about the poor cable quality that comes with this Toshiba portable hard drive, but all you need to do is buy another USB 3.0 cable which are very cheap. $3 for a 1 meter long cable, so I added that to my shopping cart as well. I owned a previous version of a 500 GB Toshiba portable hard drive that done me well in the past with backing up some data. Although the device was very safe and never corrupted on me it still took some time to back up my files to it. It was using USB 2.0. So when I found out about this USB 3.0 hard drive and how much faster it was than 2.0 and eSATA/Firewire, I had to get it.

Moving/copying my files over to this hard drive is so fast, it takes even less than half the time it use to take me with my old hard drive. I go with Toshiba because they include back up software on the hard drive already, and the hard drive itself has an internal shock sensor. You really can't go wrong with this one, just make sure you get an extra USB 3.0 cable to go with it. It's backwards compatible with USB 2.0 but if you want the lightning speed transfers then make sure you have USB 3.0 on you're PC or just buy a card.
usb cable is not good . usb came with this hard drive is kind of hard and it keep coming out. i have to replace with other usb.

Cons Review
A Disappointment . I received my drive 6 days ago and it just doesn't work. I have made countless call to technical support with everyone trying something different. It never runs when scheduled and always says that the backups did not rum and this is after trying to back up the files and folders and it taking about 9-14 hours each time. They tell me to try and manually back these up but I do not know how to do it all except documents, music, and pictures. It should bsck up whatever it has to on its own. It even crashed my computer twice. I will probably end up sending it back and going back to a Seagate. At least these work and do not take hours and hours to rum.

I had done a lot of research before buying and decided on Toshiba due to their 3 year phone support and they were in the USA and not a foreign country. Now I will have to start all over to find a company with phone support in the USA.

Another matched drive allows you to hot-swap a drive out for economic off-site storage. This is great and easy to do. With a 2 TB-size system, it will likely take hours to replicate a drive byte-by-byte when you do a swap, but this is done automatically as a background operation and drive remains in use.
