Excellent ssUSB 3.0 Docking station by SIIG . I needed faster throughput from my external USB-2.0 hard drives. Having had great success with SIIG's high-quality products in the past, I bought two SIIG ssUSB 3.0 docking stations for my Core i7 laptop. These SIIG ssUSB 3.0 docks hold internal 2.5 and 3.5" SATA II drives, are well constructed,and have fans to cool HDD. Huge speed improvement over my USB 2.0 interface when using CrystalDiskMark and HD Tune to clock the speeds.
My 2TB SATA II drives using USB 2.0 interface delivered documented speeds at 33MB/s Read and 25MB/s Write. The same SATA II external drives with the SIIG ssUSB 3.0 interface in these dockers more than tripled the Read speed and doubled the Write speed at 115MB/s Read and 63MB/s Write. 115MB/s is exceptionally fast for external drives. I also bought two SIIG USB 3.0 ExpressCards for my laptops - also superior quality! The SIIG products are well designed and engineered, with excellent customer service and a willingness to answer my several emailed questions promptly. Excellent company with excellent products and service. I highly recommend SIIG products; and with ssUSB 3.0 (10 times faster than USB-2) onboard - they are virtually future-proof.

The Fan Makes A Difference . After using two USB 2.0 docks with various hard drives I wanted the speed of USB 3.0. This dock does not disappoint. While I have not benchmarked the performance I would estimate that the throughput is at least double what I had before. It is really appreciated when writing and reading large video files.
This dock has an integrated fan to cool the inserted hard drive. Although it makes some noise, it does work. Comparing the temperature of the drive in the two docks without fans shows that the drive in the SIIG dock is cooler. During summertime conditions without air conditioning I think it will make a difference. (all hard drives are 7200rpm)

I guess the front slot is storage for a drive when not in use or for your spare change.

Fan sounds like a Mack truck . No-fan versions go for $35, so I figured the extra money was worth it. But now that I think about it, what external today comes with a fan??? So is the fan worth the extra money or is it hype? I do know this, it's noisy! Because the fan fits loosely into the inside case, it rattles around while it's running. It rattles and sounds like a diesel engine, super annoying...and I paid extra for that??? But no worries, you can fix that in less than 5 minutes.
1) Take off the 4 screws on the bottom.
2) Slide off the bottom cover
3) Get a pair if pliers and pull off the on/off knob. Once the knob is off, the circuit board will come out. Pull up on the composite side of the USB connector.
4) Take the fan out. Note which way the fan goes in. You can put it in backwards. The side of the fan with the writing faces out.
5) Break off 1/2 inch of a tooth pick and slide it between the fan and housing. That will keep the fan firmly in place and rattling is gone!

Very fast! . The drive is very fast on USB 3 connections. It even is faster on USB 2 connections then USB 2 drives! Easy to connect and use. I am very pleased and would buy again.
Cons Review
Noisy and worthless fan . When I read that this docking station had a "fan", I was under the impression that it pulled in air from the large gap at the front and blew the air past the hard drive, in order to keep it cool. This is not the case.
The fan, of dubious quality, only cools the internal electronics inside the case of the dock. The large gap at the front is simply an empty shelf space where you can store another drive (with no connection to the dock), or spare change, or whatever else you might want to store in it.
The fan is loud and makes an annoying hum, and the tone and sound changes as you rotate the docking station. As I rotate the station from about the X-axis it grinds and comes to a halt.

I have a large server-sized case with two large internal fans, a fan in the large power supply, a big fan on my Core I7 CPU, and 6 internal hard drives, and the whole server doesn't make anywhere near as much noise as the stupid fan in this thing.

Device fails - dont buy it . It was a great product for the two days it lasted

Tried three different disks. The disks work fine on my esata dock
Contacted SIIG - they said that indicates a defective productSo I sent for a replacement

Noisy and reverted to USB 2 . Fan is very noisy and produces way more noise than my gaming laptop does. It worked for a while at USB 3 speeds but then reverted back to USB 2 and has been stuck there for months. Replacing drivers, etc did not take it back up to USB 3.
Poorly Made . Almost from the start this unit was extremely noisy. The fan vibrated and generated the noise. It got so bad that I had to remove it from service for fear there would be a mishap. It did transfer the files well, but it did not seem well made. It has two slots for hard drives, which is handy. One is for storage and the other for file transfer. I then bought a Thermaltake unit, which works very well.
Failed the same day... . I usually do not write reviews about products I purchase. However, I found mandatory to spend a few minutes about this storage device. I purchased this SATA 3 docking station to be used as a NAS. Since it features the latest USB 3.0 standard I had to buy a USB 3.0 express card hub so that I could fully implement this technology. After properly installing the drivers I did benefit of the excellent speed granted by this combination. Unfortunately my experience did not last overnight. The docking station stopped working the same day. Both power supply and the cradle were suddenly not recognized by my workstation. The power supply shows an LED on it and the peripheral device too. They started blinking and a slight odor of burnt gave me final confirmation that the life span of my brand new device had come to an end. All troubleshooting procedure was performed but the truth was undeniable. I returned it and Amazon did not hesitate to fully refund my purchase.
