The Mapower KC31NU2 is a NAS enclosure that can be set up as a FTP server, SAMBA server or a normal external hard drive. Share your files across a network or the internet. This enclosure contains an internal IDE to USB 2.0 or RJ45 (network port), 4 LEDs lights to monitor operating status and can support up to 750GB Hard drive in FAT32 format only (formatting software included). This enclosure is managed by a web-based management utility that is included. Multiple platform compatibility for PC and MAC systems.

It works until you ... figure out the date issue - resolved . Everything went fine install new drive format FAT32 write and read files from it.
I copied some folders and files to the drive, worked just fine. Then I realized that the date stamps on the folders and files were all wrong. Day 1, the dates were 12/31/2004. Day 2 they were 1/1/2005. Day 3 they are 1/2/2005 ...
I created a brand new file and saved it and yes, the date was 1/2/2005.
I know this is not a FAT32 problem because I have a USB flash drive and the dates are correct on it even though it is FAT32 in a Windows7 and NTFS computer. I should mention that I have 2 Windows 7 computers and one Windows XP computer on my network and the dates come up wrong in all cases. If this problem doesn't get resolved, it will have to go back, which is too bad, because it does exactly what I wanted it to do for my needs.
I sent Mapower an email last night and haven't heard back from them yet.

Great product for a small price tag . Simply put, READ THE LITERATURE, or you will bang your head against the wall. plug it in, make sure your HDD is in FAT 32. set the accounts up, and Map the drive. I havent had one issue since i turned it on, and it has been running since June 2010.

3.5" Landisk NAS review . So far the product has worked flawlessly and it sits on my home LAN doing exactly what I purchased it to do; acting as a temporary storage repository for new music, ripped movies and pictures prior to moving them to my home server after categorising my files.

Easy to install great for home network backups. . installation... very easy. Compatible with ms and smb networks. Great for home and small business backups. You can use those old ATA hard drives.
Better than ByTecc . This enclosure might seem to be on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for.
I bought this to replace a dead ByTecc ME-850 (the second one to die on me in as many years). Out of the box I was unimpressed with this unit as it had the same quirks as the ByTecc units had (filename renaming issue with letter case, some folders not showing up on initial connect). Then I upgraded the firmware from BASIC32 to BASIC47 (had to go looking for this--why doesn't the company have it on their website?). Once I did that everything was perfect and the hard drive sleep timer worked. Maybe the fan noise is a bit loud, but this does help keep the enclosure way waaayy cooler than the ByTecc ones. A hard drive activity light would also be nice to have.
