Get down with the Lockdown! . For the longest time I was searching for a device to keep my data secure and still be able to bring with me anywhere. It wasn't until recently that manufacturers started developing encrypted-security cases for portability and Satechi was one of them who has done a pretty good job at it. I purchased the Lockdown Enclosure a couple weeks ago and am satisfied with its overall performance. Here are some pros of the product:- Easy set-up: installation is pretty straightforward and easy if you follow the detailed instructions; and there is no need for software which is a plus
- Touch sensitive keypad: the surface is very smooth so watch out for those fingerprints!
- Secure encryption: super high-tech security system which was the same type used in military stuff
- USB 3.0 Super-Speed: really high data transfer if your computer supports USB 3.0 40-50 MB transfer rates)
- Display: not a great one but allows you to see the passcode digits and browse through the menu and other functions
- Attractive design: very clean, sleek, and straightforwardHere are some cons of the product:- Small display: the text on the screen is a little on the smaller side, but I guess this is good in case someone is peeking over your shoulder to look at your passcode
- Slim casing: I have large hard drives that don't fit into the slim casing - can only fit SATA hard drives that are 9.5mm or thinnerOverall, I highly recommend this hard drive enclosure and I'm thoroughly satisfied with mine!
Satechi LockDown USB 3.0 Super-Speed 256-bit Encrypted Portable External 2.5" SATA Hard Drive Enclosure Reviews
Great protection on the go. . This product has lived up to my expectations. It works well with Windows 7 and OSX.The device supports USB3 and I installed a INTEL ssd drive. The device performs very well in this combination. The hardware is capable enough to be able to decrypt and still provide a high transfer rate. The main thing I tested was how Windows 7 would react if I did not enter the proper password on the device keeping it locked. I am happy to see windows knows that it is a encrypted volume and not a "unreadable or corrupted" volume which could lead to windows wanting to format it.I suppose the only downside I see to this product is that the keypad will probably pick up the oils on your fingers and someone could figure out your password that way. They have done this to crack passwords on smartphones.I like this device because the best protection for your files is to keep access limited. If you use an encrypted volume on your computer then someone could break into said computer and download that volume and break into it on their leisure. This device keeps those files separated from intrusion via the Internet.
Satechi LockDown USB 3.0 Super-Speed 256-bit Encrypted Portable External 2.5" SATA Hard Drive Enclosure Opinions
Almost perfect . Everything work's as advertised, my only complaint is that the size of this enclosure, does not allows the installation of most 1Tb Hdd, only 9.5 mm, most of them are 12.5mm thick, other than this small limitation, is perfect.
Early Glitch Resolved - Product Rocks Again . I had previously posted here that I experienced a problem with these enclosures. I did some troubleshooting and contacted support. I have to say, they were very responsive and worked with me to completely resolve the problem. Turns out I had an older unit and the code has since been updated. My enclosures were replaced with no cost or trouble. I have now tested over 50 times and have not been able to duplicate the prior problem (which I had been able to duplicate on demand every time on the old enclosure). At this point, not only for my original points I made below, but also for the great support Alan at Satechi has provided I am strongly recommending this unit. Here is my original review:Over the years I have had a number of encrypted drives. I tend to avoid software based encryption due to performance overhead and the fact that the drive details are still available (partitions, etc.). This is a very minor thing I admit, but I am paranoid like that. As a consultant I have and store a tremendous amount of highly sensitive client information. I also create a separate virtual workstation for use on each client's network so that there is no "cross contamination". Over the years I have used full sized eSATA and USB 1.1/2.0 3.5" drives with removable keys - with bad results. Keys get lost...the slot gets damaged...either way, you are out of luck. These are also heavy and require separate A/C power. I purchased two of these Satechi enclosures and 2 1TB 2.5" drives. The enclosures arrived very quickly. Installing the drives was very easy - and Satechi even included a mini Philips head screwdriver. The construction is better than most enclosures I have used (and I have used more than I can count). Plugged them in to my USB 3.0 hub, they powered on, I set the password and was up and running. No need to ever look at a manual. There are a couple nice features on the readout, though not really needed. There is a button you can hold to lock/unlock while still connected. I would love to see an option for auto-locking after a period of time added. Obviously the enclosure is not reading the drive itself so gather data like % full is not realistic but it does include temp, hours used, etc. A live throughput display would be cool... As far as the core purpose - encrypt the ENTIRE drive at a hardware level it does just that. I removed the drive and checked with a hex editor and some drive utilities just to make sure. I have been running VMware workstation guests from these for several days now without a single hiccup. While there is a seperate USB cable to provide additional power I have not had to use it on either my USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 ports on my Dell laptop or my Dell desktop. In both cases USB 3.0 is an add-on card). Password can only go to 8 characters - which I would like to see changed to at least 12 given that it is numerals only - but for most purposes this works fine. You can also throw TruCrypt on there and software encrypt on top of the physical for the really paranoid.Bottom line: I have already recommended this to a couple friends that are placing their orders.
Secure your hard drive with style!!! . Those of you designers out there understand that files can easily reach well over 50mb. The company I work for does over 200 interior design projects a year and we go through hard drive after hard drive like floppy disks.A few years ago I forgot one of my external hard drives after a presentation I did (being all nervous and such) losing my work I had done for some government projects. Of course my boss wasn't too happy about it, considering that government projects are supposed to be a little on the confidential side... So the company invested in some Apricorn hard drive security cases to protect our files, in the case (no pun intended) that we lose a hard drive again. The cases did exactly what they needed to do, but we found ourselves constantly purchasing additional ones because of the need for more hard drive space. From a designer's point of view, the Lockdown far exceeds the product design of a lot of other security cases. There is clearly a finer sense of detail at every corner of the Lockdown from where the front casing meets the rear, to the simplistic and minimal style keypad that performs its very function, no more, no less. Also, the keypad is touch sensitive, elminating the need for more moving parts which would undoubtedly require maintenance after long usage. I know this review is a little lengthy, but I get really excited about well designed products! One tip: make sure to write down the mastercode and store it somewhere - this code will allow you to recover your hard drive content if you ever forget your password.
