So Far So Good . I bought a Mac Mini with a 120GB hard drive in April 2009 so I've been hunting around for a good back-up drive to store my media and to work with Apple's Time Machine. After a few hours of researching external drives, I realized that, unlike other products, there were no clear winners. I wanted Firewire 800 capability but owners of other FW800 capable drives complained that the drives dismount when the mini goes to sleep, forcing them to connect via USB 2.0. I decided to gamble my money on this not-yet-reviewed Fantom Drive because of its low power consumption, the positive reviews of other Fantom drives, and at least the outside chance that the drive would not dismount with FW800. After a week of running time machine, it appears the gamble paid off. My mini sleeps after fifteen minutes and every time I wake it up, the drive is still mounted. [9 July 09 Update: FW connection did not continue to work with Time Machine. I had to switch to USB2.0, works perfectly.] I'm pleased. The drive warms up a bit. It is quiet but not half as quiet as the drive in my mini. It is small and attractive.

Fantom GreenDrive 2TB USB 2.0/Firewire 400/Firewire 800/eSATA GD2000Q Reviews
Served Me Well . I purchased my 1TB GreenDrive in July or 2009. It has been mostly full with daily shuffling of data since then. It was on, nonstop, for the first 10 months. Then the drive was turned off for 4 months. And now it has been on, nonstop again, for the past ~4 months. I have not had any problems with the drive at all.

Fantom GreenDrive 2TB USB 2.0/Firewire 400/Firewire 800/eSATA GD2000Q Opinions
Pure Awsome! . Had this drive for about a year now and I love it. This drive was easy to set up with partitioning 200GB for Windows files and programs. It does get warm, so keep it in a ventilated spot. The firewire 800 did stop working with my computer, but after some trouble shooting I determined it was the cable that came with the drive or something happened to my iMac. I replaced the cable and reset the firewire 800 my computer. The situation is fixed so no problems now. In just about a years time my 2TB drive is about full and I'm going to get another one of this particular drive. I plan on daisy-chaining them together (a benefit with firewire 800).The end of the power cable is not fat but will stick out to the left or the right depending on how you plug it into the wall or power strip. I highly recommend 2TB external drive.

Great Drive Works for Ubuntu Linux! . I was very impressed that this drive worked immediately when I installed it onto a Ubuntu Linux system. I didn't have to do a mount command or anything. I plugged it into the Firewire 400 port, and Ubuntu instantly recognized the drive. [...] It is a great drive, and very compact and sleek. The drive is even assembled in USA -- nice! It also comes with all the cables you would need - usb, firewire 400, firewire 800, eSATA.
The drive is packaged with a software disk containing only windows and mac backup software. The paper install manual only discusses windows and mac. It would be nice if Fantom stated in the manual that the drive also works for Linux, and added some troubleshooting items (just in case) and basic Linux installation tips to the manual.

Flawless . This is my first external hardrive ever. However, I am throughly pleased. It works perfectly. I did have a little hard time getting my computer to find it, but that's only because of my ignorance with how to format hard drives. Since then though, I have had no complaints. It's super quiet. I can barely hear it. My fan is louder. With the E-sata, it's so fast too. Great purchase.
Cons Review
serious problems on Mac . I use a Fantom GD1000Q to backup my new Macbook Pro over Firewire 800. Unfortunately my Mac has numerous problems if the drive is plugged in. For example, I cannot Shutdown the Mac if the drive is plugged in. It hangs for hours and I have to force the Mac to power off. I also have frequent stability problems with various programs hanging. I switched to a different external drive for a while and all these problems went away. I recently reconnected the Fantom drive and all hell broke loose. This morning half my programs had hung. Finder had hung and I could not unmount the drive. I forced a power down and unplugged it. I am now afraid to plug it back in.
Wake Up! . I've tried using this on an iMac and a Mac Mini. On both systems the drive will not wake up 75% of the time. Even if I tell the drive not to sleep in system preferences, they still spin down and sleep. I believe the drives firmware runs independent of what the operating system tell the drive to do. Once the drive sleeps, other programs and Finder functions appear to hang. Even attempting Shut Down does not bring the system back to a response. The only way to recover is to power off the drive and power it back on. Doing so brings up an unsafe device removal message, but it is the only method I found to recover. I was hoping there would be some kind of firmware upgrade posted on MicroNet's web site, but I've been waiting a year now and NOTHING! I've read blogs from people who have spoken to MicroNet's help desk and no one has received any advise other than to power off the drive and turn it back on. Not a good fix in my opinion. If it wasn't for the wake issue, the drive feels like a well built product. It's quite heavy and of a good quality feel. If only it would work with a Mac. It's not much good if it wants to sleep all the time! Wake Up MicroNet......or at least wake your drives up!
Great when in use.. but crashed after 2 weeks of minimal usage . Before I even gotten this drive, I was amazed at the amount of memory space and low price. When I had gotten to use the drive for the first time, I was delighted at how silently it ran and cool it stayed for hours. I used it just twice to backup my files and transfer it to a different computer. However after finishing the transfer, I accidentally forgot to safely remove it and had a program from the hard drive folder still running. The HD started beeping. I tried turning off the system, unplugging the cords, and anything just so it would stop. It never did and the files couldn't connect to my computer. I contacted the company and asked if they could replace it for me since I had a warranty. They said that I could not because the package seal was broken. I told them that I couldn't even use the HD if I had not broken the seal and they replied by asking if I wanted to replace it myself. The HD crashed just because I simply forgot to safely remove the device. So besides the performance and quantity of space, this drive would have to be very well taken care of or otherwise, just expect it would crash within a couple months of purchase. Might as well go with a reliable HD if you're not careful.
