Trendy and durable portable drive . I was always apprehensive of taking my external hard drive with me while I travel, the reason being it is made of plastic and I had the fear that if I mishandle the device it would leave a crack. Now I need not worry about this any more, thanks to Iomega Helium External Hard drive. The aluminum outer cover gives it a tough look and feel. I am confident that nothing is going to happen to my external drive even in toughest of conditions. Despite using aluminum the device weights just 8.2 ounces. The LED indicates that the drive is running, this is a good idea, else it would be difficult to find out if the drive is working, the reason being Helium is absolutely noiseless when it is running. On the whole a trendy and a durable portable drive for my day to day travel.
Stylish partner . I would call Iomega Helium as a stylish partner for my Mac notebook. The device is not just stylish but is durable as well. It comes packaged in an anodized aluminum shell that is safe from drops. The drop guard technology that is exclusive of Iomega is worth a mention here. The device can be dropped from a height of 1.3 meters and yet it works as good as new. The Helium 500 GB hard drive is USB 2.0 compatible. The device is formatted for Mac OS with Apple's HFS+ file system. Iomega offers two backup solutions for Helium, one is the Retrospect Express and the other is MozyHome online backup service. Iomega Helium works fine with Windows XP and Vista as well but has to be reformatted to NTFS for Windows.
Cons Review
Incompatible . While the drive works fine with my new MBP, the Iomega Protection Suite / QuickProtect software does not install on my Intel based MBP. Something they don't tell you until you contact support or dig into Iomega's support forums. I guess they've been aware of this incompatibility for about a year with no ETA on a fix while encouraging people to use Time Machine instead. Very disappointed with the purchase and will be returning.
