No Worries Ease of Use . I've had my 80GB WD EHDD for several months now. I've had no problems with it, and I use it all the time. You can run programs off of it if you would like. Its quick, quite, sleek and small. Matches my computer, and the EHDD never lets me down.
I work in the computer department at a local Best Buy, and I always reccomend this product to people who are looking for EHDD's. Great buy, will buy again!

So far So Good. . I bought this drive direct from Western Digital about 2 months ago. So far, it's running great.
It's quiet and fast and perfect for the backups that I use it for. As with all external hard drives, you have to treat them gently and don't bump them around especially when the drive is in use.
I expect to get a lot of use out of this drive.

Using as backup . I've been using the Drive for about a month, mostly as a back up, but also to coordinate between home/work computers. Working exactly as I hoped.

Backup not just more storage. . I have used 2 WD 20gb hard drives for 4 years in hard use and they are good still perfect. I am about to order this 80gb external for backup purposes. Read it "backup" That means all of the data I put on my backup hard drive will also be on my regular internal hard drives. Why? Because that is how you use a backup hard drive. The above reviewer was not using the drive for backup purposes. He says he was but he really was just using it for more storage. He lost all of his supposed backedup data because his backup drive failed but what was his drive backing up? Nothing. Nothing at all it was just more storage.
That is why I intend to not just use my new external hard drive for more storage but I will actually use it for backup. So anything on my regular hard drive that I don't want to lose I will also put on my backup drive. Sorry for repeating myself but I guess this theory is just too simple to be followed.

Security . This product saves your important files in a easy way and in a safe place. It is so easy to use and makes transfering files between computers a breeze.
Cons Review
Broke after 2 weeks of use . I bought the drive from a local retail shop. Two weeks later, the hard drive would not turn on. I checked the power supply's output and I found that there was no output; the power supply was dead. I went back to the retail shop with the power supply and the purchase receipt at hand. They said they wanted everything packaged before they could ship it back to the manufacturer and give me a new one. When I explained that I needed the drive and most importantly, the data inside the drive, they said that there is nothing they can do; I should better forget my work.
Of course I didn't. I went out, bought an equivalent power supply, plugged it to the hard drive and there it was alive again. I paid another $30 but at least I saved my work.
Conclusions:
1) It is unacceptable, the least I can say, to have such kind of infant life mortality on modern products. Don't they burn in their products before they pass the inspection stage?
2) Bureaucracy wins over customer service i.e. WD's policy of having everything back before they can ship a replacement did not work in my case; I just wanted a new power supply so that I could save my data; They wouldn't care less.
A pretty disappointing experience.

Beware of WD External HDs if You Value Your Data!!! . This review is for a different HD by Western Digital, but the customer service and product warranty are exactly the same...
My 250GB Western Digital hard drive died after only a month & took with it over 150GB worth of data that wasn't backed up anywhere else (for obvious reasons - who really "backs up" their backup drive anyway?). At first the drive worked very well: it supported plug-and-play, had a large amount of space, was competitively priced and was made by WD, a brand I thought to be trustworthy.
However, a company who boasts for you to "Put Your Life On It" (their external hard drives) should at least try to ensure data reliability & take accountability for their products. When I called customer service about my failed drive I obtained this list of information:
1. If you wish to recover your data, you must use one of their partners or risk voiding your warranty. There are only 8 in North America.
2. You are responsible for the cost incurred in using their data recovery partners.
3. Western Digital doesn't issue any refunds. If you purchased your drive from a store such as BestBuy you could return your faulty product. However, at online retailers such as Buy.com you are left without options.
4. You can obtain a replacement drive (what they call re-certified) but it'll be devoid of your precious data.
5. You are responsible for the shipping costs associated with returning the faulty drive back to WD. They pay for shipping of the replacement drive to you. This is apparently called "fair shipping".
6. According to the CSR, Western Digital is not responsible for your data. They are only a supplier of hard drives.
7. On a different note, the CSR never actually apologized for my failed drive but only used words such as "unfortunate" and "let's explore your options".
In summary, this product is fine if you happen to receive a unit that doesn't fail. However, I would not be willing to take that risk and I don't recommend anyone buying this product for any amount of money. It's acceptable that a device such as this is prone to failure. However, Western Digital's "it's not my problem" attitude is not.
