External storage of Hi Def recordings . I bought this drive to use with my Dish Network HD DVR. It was very easy to hook up and caused no problems with authorization or operation. It has provided a solution for my disk space shortage on my DVR. I have no complaints at all.

Western Digital WDG1U7500N My Book Essential Edition 750 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Reviews
Everything works as expected with reasonable performance . Reasonable performance (30-40MB/sec write performance), and is working well for me.
I repartitioned and reformatted this as HFS+ (Journaled) for my MacBook Pro, but everything should apply to Windows machines as well.
The DC power supply is smaller than I've seen in the past for drives, which is nice, and this unit is reasonably well cooled, half-stylish, quiet, and has good performance.
Couldn't expect much more.

Just a simple Plug-n-Play and your on your way! . I bought this to put next to the WD320 with a matching case. The connection was easy and I began copying all the files over immediately. The performance works good enough to stream video to my media center PC which is all I really need.
You can't go wrong with this one.

Nervous about reliability . Purchased this to provide a backup of my digitized video files. Connecting to my G4 PowerMac I tried to format the drive using Disk Utility. The first couple of times failed, getting an "input/output" error. But I able to eventually format the drive -- chalking it up to user error.
I transferred about 100GB of video without any problems on Day 1.
My second attempt to transfer more files resulted in the drive locking up (the Copy indicator on the Mac stalled with no indication of bits being transferred.) I couldn't cancel the copy via the dialog, did a Force Quit (to no avail) and was forced to do a hard shut down (Powered off the Mac.)
When I powered everything back on, the drive was no longer mountable. I launched Disk Utility again and it recognized the drive as a Western Digital 2TB drive with no USB serial number!
From this point forward, I was unable to reformat, partition, or otherwise get the drive to work. Even tried to connect it to my XP laptop.
So back to WD it goes. Fortunately, I did not erase the previously copied 100GB, so no data loss. But this experience does make me a little nervous about trusting the drive as an archiving or sole copy repository.
The old adage is true - if it doesn't exist in two separate locations, it may as well not exist.

Great with Dish DVR . I purchased this hard drive specifically for use with a Dish 722 receiver/DVR. It was incredibly easy to connect and format. Saving HD movies to the hard drive takes awhile but, you can view TV while the save is in progress. Playback from the hard drive is flawless.
So Far So Good . Easy set up and works well out of the box as expected. With hard drives you don't really know until they operate for a year or more but so far so good. Pleased with form factor, size, and quiet operation.
great performance under extreme use... . i bought this hard disk firs to backup my desktop files but i found myself later backing up multiple computers over the network and it's been doing great for almost 5 months... i recommend this product for the quality and price... as for the installation, plug and play thats it...
excellent easy to use product . I love this device. Its storage capability is enormous and it's essentially plug and play. No software to fool with.
Cons Review
Makes noise and went bad after a year . I had a WD and mine was pretty noisy at times. The drive went bad after a year. About four months after the manufacturer warranty. I had to pay 1,500 to retrieve my data. Found out it was a bad controller. Anyway I am now using LaCie Drives. I realize that sometimes there are bad batches of drives. But at least with LaCie they give you a 3 YEAR WARRANTY on their drives.
Flakey from the start . I bought this several years ago, and it was unstable and unreliable from the get-go. I've wished for a long time that I'd returned it immediately.
I've never been able to get this hard drive to connect reliably. Plug it in, attach the USB cord and... toss a coin. Heads, it will mount, tails, it will not make its presence known to the computer. I'm relatively certain that something is loose in there.
It came in very handy when its big brother failed completely (the six month old MyBook 1TB I eventually upgraded to) - some of the data that wasn't backed up elsewhere was still lingering on this one in the closet. Took several attempts to get it to mount, but once it did I found the data.
I'll never buy another WD product.
- Back up your data. You'll save yourself a LOT of headache.
