MINI NAS ENCLOSURE FOR 2.5IN HARD DRIVE

This review is from : Mini Nas Enclosure for 2.5IN Hard Drive
Excellent while it lasts. . First off, I bought two of these devices and am ordering a third now. The first one I bought in December 2009 and liked it enough to buy a second one in January 2010 for a friend. They are easy to deploy and fairly cheap given the feature set and amazingly small size. In his I dropped a 5400 rpm WD Blue (320GB) and in mine a 7200 rpm WD Black (320GB) and both were very responsive. It's also worth noting that the built-in print server worked well for me while using a plain old deskjet printer while my friend had issues getting his all-in-one style printer to behave properly. I assume the fact that my printer was a basic non-fancy device made the difference. That being said, they both died in just under two years of operation. My friend did not plug his into a UPS so I suspect a power surge, but mine was plugged into a fully functional UPS and still died. It did not die during a storm or anything like I'd expect, but rather I powered it down one day to reroute some power and video cables in the office and it just failed to power back on. Both devices died within about 2 months of each other and I have not contacted the vendor yet as I'm just lazy. When the first one died, I swapped the power supplies between them to see if the PS died or the box and the problem followed the box, so I assume the little motherboard fried. For anyone looking for the tech info, it's a Linux flavor under the hood with what appears to be Samba. It allows user level ACLs and a public share. I was using mine as a central network attached swap space and it worked well dragging / dropping ISO's and whatever from machine to NAS. The underlying filesystem looks to be ext3 so recovery of the files was easy. I pulled the drive and dropped it into a SATA-to-USB cradle on a Linux box and all files were immediately accessible.Given the ease of use, generally low price, and ease of recoverability in the event of a disaster, I am giving 4 stars.****UPDATE: I contacted the vendor about potentially repairing or replacing the devices and while tech support stated they were out of warranty, they still asked me to fill out the RMA request for service. When I filled out the RMA and attached original receipts and all that fun, the RMA department sent me a very brief "Your devices are out of warranty" and when asked why they had me fill out the RMA they stated the cost of repair was comparable to replacement and stopped responding. That being said, these are still decent devices for almost two years of service. I've still ordered a third and will post when it dies. Unless I get better than 2 years out of the new one I'll likely not buy from Addonics again.
