A High Quality Flash Drive - Reasonably Fast . We have used many manufacturer's flash drives over the years, and have been most satisfied with, and prefer those from, OCZ Technology. Our experiences have been that other manufacturer's flash drives have prematurely failed, but our Diesel Flash Drives perform every time without a difficulty.
The Diesel is not OCZ Technology's fastest read/write flash drive, but it is rock-solid and includes a warranty of a reasonable time period.
We prefer the Diesel over other flash drives that have moving parts, but if you are someone that easily misplaces items, the Diesel may not be for you since it includes a cap.

Critically needed simple flash drive space . This flash drive fits into a category of most efficient with hefty space available. I have many, and some add annoying software that gets in the way. For work like mine (healthcare research) where large files are the norm, this flash drive provides a critical necessity for work.

Portable hard drive and mini computer . When I purchased this 16GB OCZ Diesel, the deal was too good to pass up. I already owned 2 USB sticks, but none were as large as this one. The first thing I did when I got it was set it up to test transfer speeds and it performed exceptionally well. It isn't the fastest USB stick on the market, but it does a fine job and the little light on the end is convenient to remind you not to touch it while it is busy. The second thing I did was download and install http://portableapps.com/ onto the stick. It's free software that basically turns your large USB stick into a portable computer. Plug it in to a public or friends computer and all the software and settings you normally use come up (bookmarks, virus protection, word processing and more). This turned my little USB stick into a portable powerhouse. I haven't turned back yet and carry this thing with me everywhere. Additionally, because it is 16GB in size, it is even able to hold operating systems (Linux for instance) on-board, which allows you to boot up into an alternative OS if the need arises (not the best way, but a good backup for trouble shooting).
Pros: fast enough, large, convenient and can be found at good price points
Cons: cap is removable, which means it is also easily misplaced or lost and either the data transfer test or the constant flashing light made this little sucker heat up (nothing dangerous), which was cause for concern that it may get too hot if left in for long periods (who leaves a stick in for that long anyway?)

great capcity for the price but surprisingly slow . This is my newest addition to my memory stick collection. Its small and lightweight and works like a champ. The one thing that surprised my was that it was on the slow side. This is very unusual considering its the OCZ brand. Aside from that, it is a good memory stick for the money
A pity they can't all be this good . Of all the portable drives I've ever had, this one gets the most use. It's been rock solid reliable. It's worked in everything I've ever plugged it into and been dropped and stepped on and usually lays around without the cap on it. But none of that matters. It still works like new and now I'm in the process of scouring the internet for deals on more of this little gem before they leave the market. I guesss I shouldn't be saying that, since I want them all... Don't listen to that guy who says it's no good and can't even open the package without hurting himself...

Love it . I love the build quailty of it. It is made of some kind of metal, but yet it is very lite. Also, it looks very slick and stylish. Even one of my co workers complemented on it. It small enough to where when it is in my pocket(attached to my keys) I do not notice it. The lid on it is very tight and I have no worries of it falling off. Speed times are good for transfering files. Works in Linux also. Wouldn't mind haveing a second one of these.
Cons Review
Abysmal performance until drive firmware re-flashed . Let's establish something right now: this is a USB flash drive. It's literally the most "Plug-and-Play" device you can buy on the market right now. There's technically nothing fancy/magical about how these things work (from a usability standpoint or a low-level hardware I/O controller or NAND standpoint). They're simple, with the majority of the bottleneck being the flash itself or the firmware/code that drives the I/O between the USB bus and the flash used; the reason they're so small is because there's no complex circuitry.
So to encounter a brand-new factory-sealed drive that requires a firmware re-flash just to get proper write performance is completely and entirely unacceptable. These are not devices that require or advocate "performance tuning" -- they're supposed to *just work*. Such re-flashing may be required after a few years of heavy use (due to write levelling or bad blocks), but shouldn't be required with a brand new product.
The horrible performance of OCZ's 8GB and 16GB Diesel drives is well-established on their forums. The excuses given by the OCZ staff are amazing and make no sense from a technical standpoint. Don't let the manufacturer's focus on filesystem type dissuade you -- these drives do not care if you're using FAT, FAT32, NTFS, UFS, ext3fs, HFS, or HFS+. All that matters is whether or not you pick a block size that the drive's firmware internally uses as an I/O buffer size and NAND block size (e.g. 8192/16384/32768/65536 bytes). The drive comes stock formatted FAT32 with 8KByte clusters.
Furthermore, the utility OCZ advocates you use to restore drive performance doesn't work on Windows 7 64-bit (and probably not 32-bit). Even when run within an XP Mode VM it doesn't work ("No drive found!"). I cover the issue here (which also includes other links to others reporting the same problem):

Also be aware these products are being shipped/distributed in heat-sealed packaging (the kind which requires you to bust out a knife or pair of scissors and slice your hand open on the plastic). The end result is that you have something that can't be returned to Amazon because the product packaging is destroyed. An RMA with OCZ is the only choice -- and why bother when there are folks out there who have reported RMA'ing these drives 3 or 4 times only to have the same problem? Not good.
On a positive note, the drive is well-made, short in length, and has a tolerable read/write LED. But none of these things matter if the drive itself does not do its job effectively.
All in all, I recommend customers consider a different brand, be it Crucial, HP, Kingston, PNY, or Sandisk. This is just another one of OCZ's many products that cater to the "I want to fiddle with everything" demographic. Those of us who know better, and those of us who just want something that works, should avoid this product.

Fantastic when working... . I purchased this drive originally in mid-August 2009 from NewEgg. It is my daily use drive and I keep my life on it (backed up, thankfully). Anyway, about 3 months into using this device, it began to truncate files. Windows constantly wanted to run scandisk & chkdsk on it. OCZ was fast and responsive with an RMA. Now, about 4 months later, I'm having the same thing happen. I'm waiting to hear back from OCZ on ANOTHER RMA...but I don't even know if I want another drive like this.

NOT the same Diesel from 2008!! Snail slow. . I purchased this drive after reading several positive reviews (testfreaks.net provided a fairly in depth comparison of this and 16 other drives) about its above average (but not stellar) speeds. I'll start with the positive and move onto the negatives:
PRO:
-sleek, slim, small form factor--smaller than a 4GB Sandisk Cruzer Micro that I own, and I thought that the Micro was small!
-sturdy construction--the aluminum casing is definitely a notch above the plastic-y drives out there.
Unfortunately, I can't really think of any other pros, but there is one huge con and also the reason I gave this drive only ONE star.
CON:
-I did not expect to achieve the advertised 15-17MB/s write & 30MB/s b/c I realize those are exactly that--"advertised" specs. However, I also did not expect this drive to read/write SO FAR BELOW reasonable expectations for 16GB drives in this price range. No matter what benchmark I used (including HD Tune and ATTO), I could not surpass ~18.0 MB/s read and ~4.0 MB/s write. Real world tests confirmed this when I transferred 130 files (total 320 MB) averaging ~2MB files, and one large 300MB file to the drive--about 18 MB/s read and 3.75MB/s write. That is just pathetic, compared to the published online reviews that were ACTUALLY achieveing about 31 MB/s read and 25 MB/s.
Well it turns out OCZ, at least the way I see it, pulled sort of a bait-n-switch on these 16GB Diesels, b/c I had no idea there were "different" versions out there WITHOUT ANY INDICATION ON THE PACKAGING/SPECS. My friend who bought his in 2008 achieves the reported ~30MB/s and ~25MB/s (and incidentally, has a RED LED--more on this later), while my drive (also with the RED LED)struggles as explained above. See [...]-slow for a discussion of this.
A word on the LED color I mentioned earlier--apparently, the "new" drives that are slower have BLUE LED's on them, and the packaging is blue. These are, as I said, the slower drives. I am frustrated and disappointed b/c I received a RED LED drive that clearly does not have the same specs as the same packaged, RED LED drives from 2008.

Flash drive went bad . I purchased this product at retail store, it worked for couple of months; it stopped working after. Lost all data as flash no longer works, and not detected by computers. Filed a OCZ warranty and today is day 7 as they forward my trouble ticket to RMA department, still no reply from RMA.
