The best for the money . This is the second unit I bought. The first was a Maxtor one touch II 300gig. The Maxtor crashed while backing up my computer. They would fix it out of warrenty for $150. Maxtor will never see my money again. The IOGEAR is great, fast, quiet, cheap, no problems. This is true PLUG & PLAY.
At the Time I bought this Newegg had it for $239 plus shipping. I sent Amazon an email about seeing it cheaper elsewhere and about 3 days later Amazon lowered their price to $239 and free shipping. Go Amazon and Go IOGEAR.
Iogear 3.5" Ion 320 GB Combo External Hard Drive with Tri-Select (GHD335C320) Reviews
Great Plug and Play External Drive . This is a terrific device. I am not sure what the other users are complaining about. I have had the drive for a few months now and it works great! Installation is very simple - almost any computer will recognize it as a new USB connection. It doesn't spin as fast as a Maxtor drive, however, for 320GB - this is exceptional value. I have transported the drive and used it on over 5 computers - each computer had no problems with reading and recognizing the device
Iogear 3.5" Ion 320 GB Combo External Hard Drive with Tri-Select (GHD335C320) Opinions
Works Perfectly Unlike Some Other Drives - Update 11/15/09 . I have two of these Iogear 320 GB external hard drives. Both are in perfect working order. One is almost a year old - that is the breaking point for some other drives I have used. So we will see if the Iogear drives continue to work year after year. I have my most important data burned onto DVDs so I am not too worried. Best to play it safe. Anyway, the Iogears are very good and they have the most GBs for the money. I recommend to all.

Update 11/15/09 - the Iogear hard drives that I bought in 2005 still work perfectly. They are the only ones that still work after such a long time. However, of course they no longer make them! I wish they would make some 2 TB external hard drives that would last as long as their 320 GB drives. It figures - if they forget to build in planned obsolescence then they stop making them! Frustrating!
Mac users beware! . Pro: FireWire capable, quiet operation, runs cool.
Con: The software for managing the fancy button-backup system does NOT work with Mac OS X 10.4.2 (Tiger). That doesn't much matter, because the access code for the backup software (Dantz Retrospect) is not provided. On my drive, the screws for the base-plate also were missing, and I have not been able to find replacements, nor can I get them from IOGear. They can't even tell me the specs for the screws so that I can look for them locally. This item is a project which never quite reached completion.
not bad but how do you turn it off??? . Easy to install, quiet, ect but since Im connected via forewire, when I hit the power switch to shut the drive down, my entire PC does a reboot. This isnt good so I leave it running but can someone please tell me how to shut down this drive only ??????
Besides that, I find the Danz Retrospect confusing and the IO icon in the toolbox is a mystery too ........

Cons Review
This little guy cooked my new hard drive . Back in 2006, I bought the IOGEAR GHE335C Combo 3.5" ION Drive Enclosure w/Tri-Select to hold a new hard drive. I was concerned when I opened the box and saw the case, since it didn't appear to have any place for the incoming cooling air to be pulled in other than at the bottom of the case (which has minimal clearance from the tabletop). I installed the rubber feet which were included in the box, but they didn't appear to provide any additional clearance.

After installing the hard drive, I hooked the GHE335C enclosure up and everything came up fine, tested the drive to ensure proper operation by transferring a few files back and forth, and left it overnight.

The next morning, I discovered the lights on the front of the GHE335C enclosure were slowly flashing. The flashing lights were accompanied by the disturbing sounds of a hard drive spinning up and then shutting down, over and over. The outside of the GHE335C enclosure was *hot* to the touch. Since I could only intermittently access the drive while it was in the GHE335C enclosure due to the constant spin up/shut down, I removed the hard drive to investigate.

First, I installed the hard drive into a computer. Testing with the hard drive manufacturer's utility revealed that the hard drive was now full of bad blocks. I let the hard drive run for a while in a normal computer case and it never got more than lukewarm, so I must conclude that the poor design of the IOGEAR GHE335C enclosure simply suffocated the drive by preventing air from circulating around the drive to keep it cool.

Overall, I'd rate this product "Strongly Not Recommended" and recommend that anyone needing an external hard drive enclosure buy a fan cooled (forced air) enclosure. The IOGEAR GHE335C cost me a hard drive and all associated shipping costs (both purchase and return). Buyer beware.
Be Warned! . IO Gear will NOT stand behind their rebates...be warned! Both my friend and I bought a 320 gig external hard drive and we both were refused the rebate for different reasons. We have the paper work to prove we were eligible and we are working with Better Business Bureau. This hard drive is very large! Twice the size as you can imagine by its pictured ad, another deceiving tactic by IO Gear.
