Make use of your old hard drives . I had 3 drives of varying capacities lying around that I had saved from my previous 2 computers. This enclosure allowed me to salvage photos and documents off of those drives. If you have some old drives lying around and want to retrieve data off of them, or you would like to use them as a portable drive, this is an excellent way to do it.
Physical Installation:
All necessary parts are included in the box (except for the drive). Installation is fairly simple, and instructions with photos are provided. The drive jumper will have to be set to the Master or Single configuration, and the diagram for that should be on the drive. Be aware that the drive fits in there VERY snugly, (although that is not necessarily a bad thing). I had to carefully position the LED wire when inserting the drive into the case to get it to fit. It is a little tricky getting the drives in and out of the case, and I used the interface on the smaller two drives without actually inserting it into the enclosure. If you plan to switch drives frequently, this may become a chore, but if you plan to permanently use one drive in the enclosure it will work great.
Software Installation:
Windows XP recognized the drives as soon as they were plugged in. I frequently received read/write errors at first, but that may have had to do with the corrupted Windows install that was also on the drives; as once the Windows data was removed, I did not receive the messages anymore. Although a mini CD with the drivers was included, I did not need those to use the drive. Once installed, it operates like any other removable drive.
Summary:
I used mine to move all my old photos and documents off of those drives and onto my new external drive. And now I use it with the largest drive installed as a loaner drive to transfer video projects, digital footage and other large files. Since the drive itself is not included If you just want external storage, I would just buy a flash drive or external hard drive; but if you have old IDE drives lying around like I did and want to put them back to work, pick one of these up today!
