Requires 2 cables for Macbook pro . Was so excited to finally have USB 3.0 for Mac. But as you'll see their are some issues. Now you can download a driver from Lacie so that you can attach these along with their PCI-E usb 3.0 cards or their usb 3.0 expresscard/34 to your Mac ... It's all a fairly good idea. Be warned ahead of time a few things!!! One, to be fair I did know this before I bought mine, is that their USB 3.0 devices are propietary in other words you have to use Lacie products and download their Mac driver from their website not compatible with non Lacie PCI-E cards or ExpressCards/34... no big deal just buy Lacie, their most of the time good products and fairly competitive in price. However the bigger problem for me is issue number two, when I plugged in this new Lacie Rikki USB 3.0 hard drive to my mac via Lacie's USB 3.0 ExpressCard/34 it just beeped and no drive showed up. I then tried uninstalling and reinstalling their driver. Same thing it just beeped and no drive showed up, I did know the drive worked ok because it plugged into my desktop just fine but I was really bummed about it not working on my Laptop as this was the main reason I bought it! So I sent in a ticket for support via Lacie's online web support and so far what we have deduced is that there is not enough 'buspower' for my brand new Macbook pro to power this little drive and I now supposedly have to buy an additional "usb power sharing" cable from Lacie. The Lacie rep said they include it with every drive... but be warned this cable is not included with this drive. And now I'm forced into another purchase if I want to use it on my Macbook pro. I've requested that Lacie send me this cable since I had no idea I needed it, and since their rep said it was included with every drive... but we'll see. It does mention inside the box on the back of a card, "Note: Mobile drives may require additional power. Visit [...] to purchase a USB power cable for improved power." Lacie should Note: This is not visible from the outside of the box! and for their rep this cable is not included. This should also be something that Amazon makes a note of since they do not list this possible requirement anywhere in their description either. If I do get a usb power sharing cable sent to me by Lacie then I would probably throw in another star or 2 but this has been a little frustrating and I'd just like for people to know what they're getting. Other than that it seems to work fine although it is still brand new. We'll see if the usb power sharing cable allows me to use it on my laptop...

Ok I'm am updating this 2 days later Lacie has been very nice and they suprised me and said that they would be happy to ship me a USB power sharing cable. It's a bummer that I've had to wait this long to use it on my Laptop but fortunately I'm not in a huge pressing need to use it right away. If your in a huge pressing need to buy this and use it on your Mac Laptop do yourself a favor and buy a USB power sharing cable from Lacie unless you can verify that it's included in the box. Hope that helps.
LaCie Rikiki Superspeed 500 GB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive 301949 (Black) Reviews
High quality slightly thicker than expected . The measurements listed are not correct -- the height is ~0.7 in. It is thicker than the average slim external hard drive. This is due to the fact that it's a frickin' terabyte. I don't know how well padded it is internally because it has tamper-proof torx screws. There are not many enclosures out there that are metal and minimalistically attractive, the alternative I know being Iomega's Prestige Portable, but that series does not have USB 3.0 yet. Both series have plastic endcaps though. There is a power port left of the USB, power adapter is not included and not needed. There is a tiny hole right of the USB, that glows white when the drive is plugged in and blinks to indicate activity. Since it's recessed it's not an annoying strobe. The included USB 3.0 cable is 2 ft long, just right IMO.

There is a simple utility on the drive to format for Windows or Mac and make one or several partitions. I would recommend formatting it yourself if you don't want a blue oval LaCie logo for an icon, it's system hidden.

Performance test -- A solid 2 GB file transfered in 1:03 over USB 2.0, at a constant 33 MB/s. Transfers with many small files will be slower. Powered hard drives are generally faster.
LaCie Rikiki Superspeed 500 GB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive 301949 (Black) Opinions
Lacie Rikiki 1 TB USB 3.0 . Just got the Lacie Rikiki 1 TB USB 3.0 and it works just as expected. Phantastic transfer rates of up to 90 MB/s when transferring single 10 Gb backup files (I am using a high-end notebook with USB 3.0 so there is no restriction on that side), and creating a 100 GB data backup to that disk still transfered at ~40-50 Mb/s. USB 2.0 works with one cable on my older notebook. So the speed is great, size and design are superb (yes it is a bit thicker than usual 500 GB harddisks but it has an even smaller footprint than most of them).

When you first plug it in it asks you how to partition the device (one device or addition of a small up to 32 GB Mac/Linux transfer partition, and notifies you that it WILL allow you to just wipe the disk and format it however you like with the standard windows software. Really nice, and one of the main reasons why I preferred this drive over the cheaper WD one which seems to have some annoying crippleware on it that seems to be difficult to get rid of.

My main criticism is the fact that Lacie drives seem to never spin down (this is my second Lacie, the first one beeing a 3,5" 250 GB disk, and it had exactly the same problem). No matter what you do, even unmounting the drive does not set it to sleep. As long as it has power, it will keep spinning- for the desktop version even shutting down the computer did not help. At least the disks do that at a low, constant, not too annoying rate and they are quite silent. BUT I could imagine that a constantly spinning disk consumes more energy than a disk in sleep mode... so WHY, LACIE, DO YOU DO THAT?

Since I am not going to let the external drive permanently connected to my computer anyway, only one star substraction for that feature. For the desktop version I would only give 3 stars since there you really don't want a drive thats keeps running even when you turn off the computer.
Does what it needs to do...if you know what you're doing . Just hooked this up to my new MacBook Air, and it works brilliantly. Obviously no USB3 speeds to test though (thanks for that, Apple) but I guess this does show that it works great with USB2 and transfers as fast as I'd expect it to. The look is great..clean, portable, and minimalist. The one issue I did encounter was that the drive's (presumably) formatting program that comes preinstalled on it is PowerPC only. For those of you who have OS X Lion, you won't be able to run it. So, for people who aren't familiar enough with Disk Utility to format the drive to HFS+ for use with Lion, it might not be the best choice, because otherwise it's a useless chunk of aluminum with bloatware preloaded. That being said, once I formatted the drive it worked perfectly.
Highly Recommended . The HD is light weight. silent and works very well. Looks awesome. Corners are sharp and I worry it my scratch my aluminium macbook. but the best portable harddrive I could have had, especially when its 3.0 USB compatible which makes it future proof. Haven got any chance to test 3.0 but the there is only one cable for both 2.0 and 3.0 and works without any problem. Highly recommended.
Good portable hard drive . I'm satisfied with this product; it's very small, fast, stylish, silent, on my PC it works with just the USB cable, no need to use an external power supply.

Highly recommended.
2nd USB cable? . If you only use this for USB 3.0, it is a good drive but did not know that it needed a 2nd USB cable that plugs into the power source for some computers that use USB 2.0. It's a bit annoying.
Nice idea falls short on design . I give it three stars due to it being a 1Tb without an external power supply. Also its nice and small.
However one thing kills it, the usb connection is not sturdy at all. It does not stay connected, a simple bump will disconnected. If only they made it a bit deeper for the housing of the usb to lay flat with the disc housing it would have been proper.
I have a rubber band holding the usb along the length by pushing it in and another one to holds the first rubber band so it wont fall off.
I will not buy another one.
LaCie Rikiki Superspeed 1 TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive THE BEST EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE . This is a very complete external hard drive. The design, the materials used to manufacture it, makes it one of the most strong hard drive. Even though I have only US 2.0 on my laptop, the transfer speed of this device exporting big files is excellent, compared to the increase I could obtained after buying a LaCie USB 3.0 Express Card 34 to become my USB 2.0 ports to USB 3.0 and that way take advantage of the speed. It would have a great performance also without this LaCie USB 3.0 Express Card 34, the USB 2.0 speed is amazing. It came preloaded with Genie Timeline software which allowed me to back up a lot GB's of data from my laptop about 400 GBs, and whenever I made a change or add anything new to my computer, it backs it up automatically in the background. Also with LaCie Destop Manager wich allows me to manage my LaCie Rikiki Superspeed 1 TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive. All the manual and instruction digitally preloaded in PDF Format, with Instructions on the box for a quick formatting and installation. As an extra bonus 10 GBs of LaCie WUALA for starting backing up on the Cloud. I did a lot of research before buying this brand and model, and after getting it and using it I am very satisfied. Thanks Amazon for selling it to me, and LaCie for designing it and manufacturing it. Something else, their Customer Support is one of the best I ever had. Thanks a lot!!LaCie Rikiki Superspeed 1 TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive 301952 (Black)

Cons Review
Horrible quality of USB3 connection . The USB3 connection quality of 1TB drive negates all advantages this drive has.
The USB3 cord tends to disconnect from hard drive at every little movement which makes it impossible to be used with laptop.I bought junk for ~$170..
