When its time to back up and protect your digital content--photos, music, documents, and more--it doesn't get much easier than the Seagate Free Agent Desktop USB Portable Hard Drive. Simply plug it in to any power source, connect the USB cable to any computer, and you're ready to go. This hip-looking hard drive takes up less room on your desk than an ordinary stapler, giving you more space for your other desktop items.

If you're still relying on your personal computer or back-up CDs or DVDs to store your digital content or vital personal or family documents, you're running an unnecessary risk. Your computer can only hold so many files and can crash at any time, leaving you helpless to access your content. DVDs and CDs have a place in archiving, but they get easily scratched and lost. It's too risky to store everything in your computer, and too time-consuming and cumbersome to have a drawer full of CDs or DVDs.

Computers come and go, but your content should always be nearby. With up to 250 glorious gigabytes, the Free Agent external hard drive is the best place to gather and access all of your important photos, movies, music, games and documents. Simply plug in the power and the USB cable and youâ?TMre ready to go.

The Seagate Free Agent is big enough to store a huge portion of your digital content in a safe and secure environment, but small enough to let you take that content with you wherever you go. In other words, having the Seagate Free Agent is like having your entire computer with you at all times, but in a package that's a small fraction of the space and weight of your computer. Designed to live peacefully in your home or office, the Free Agent external hard drive is extra quiet and takes up less room on your desk than a stapler. Even the cable ports are base-mounted to help keep your desk free of clutter. We even add a little bit of sophistication to your desktop with the unique espresso brown finish and molten amber illumination.

Dependable workhorse . We use these drives to back up our servers. These drives run for many hours a day in our server room. We have 8 of the 500 GB drives and 8 of the 1 TB drives. The 500 GB drives have been in service for several years. Prior to the Segate drives we had several USB-attached drives of other brands that failed under the heavy use. We have had no failures with the Segate drives.

So far can't be better! . Bought this to back up my computer. I downloaded the Seagate drive tools and this passed all tests. Works great so far and I have had perfect track record with 2 other FreeAgent USB drives.
Seagate FreeAgent 750 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive ST307504FDB1E1-RK Opinions
Excellent product! . Based on the reviews from other consumers, I purchased it for my backups and it has been nothing but ease when I transferred all my backups to this drive. Reliable and easy to use. Highly recommended. I'm a Mac user.
Failed after 14 months . I purchased two of these units on 5/20/2009 from Staples to use as alternatiing backups for my desktop computer. Staples had a flyer out with a really good price ($89.90 EA + Tax). Both units had a 5 year limited warranty, which was an important selling feature to me. I kept one unit plugged into the computer and the other one I would plug in only when I wanted to run backup to it. They both worked fine until about 4 days ago.

The unit that stayed plugged in started making intermittent squeaking noises. I went to the Seagate website and downloaded their diagnostic tool and it tested the unit and confirmed it was bad. (It's a neat tool and will work on other drives, I believe.) I tried to use the Seagate website to get RMA, but the Product Number on these external units are all wrong, according to the CSR I finally spoke to. He gave me the correct part #, which is the OEM drive number for the drive inside the case. The actual drive inside the case, in my instance, was a Barracuda 7200.10 Seagate unit. After getting the correct part number, I easily got an RMA. I did, however, call and ask about the possibility of someone extracting data from the bad drive when I sent it in... they do not return the drive, but ship another "re-manufactured" drive to you.

The RMA had me shipping the unit to Jabil Circuity in Texas. I just don't trust them (anybody, really) with the data on my hard drive, so I elected to not return the unit and destroy it myself, effectively making the warranty worthless... but my choice. Destroying that drive was an education. The Seagate drive is very well contructed of very strong components. I'm amazed that they can sell equipment like that at the prices they do. I own 5 Seagate Freeagent drives.... er... 4 now. The last drive I purchased was a Western Digital 1TB from Amazon based on reviews on this and other sites that WD drives "seemed" to be more reliable. I'm still not real sure which is the most realiable manufacturer of hard drives and would really like to have some hard data on them. In any case, I'm going to change my operating method and keep my external hard drives dormant until I'm ready to run backup and only then hook them up. I suspect cooling of external hard drive is a reason for premature failure as the Seagate drive that died seemed too warm to the touch. I'm going to replace this failed drive with a second Western Digital drive.... so far none of them have failed on me.

Anyway, I was happy with the Seagate until it died on me. Multiple backups on multiple drives, y'all.
