Ugly ugly casing no backup software easy installation . I bought the drive so that I can put my MP3 and digital imaging pictures on it and free up some space on my laptop hard drive. the drive was extremely easy to install, and i have had no problems with it. i trust the western digital name, so im confident that it will last (versus reviews i've seen about the maxtor hard drive). not the cheapest drive out there, so others might be a better value. i bought it with a rebate option. two problems:1) the casing on the drive is downright terrible. it has a bright pink and blue light on the side of it. i have no idea what the point is, but i haven't found a way to turn it off. unless you are a 10-year old girl, i dont think you will appreciate it. im debating wrapping mine in a paper bag because it is just too bright.2) there is no backup software included with the drive. it is quite annoying, since i have to find my own software (and likely pay a fee). it would be nice to have something to automate the backup procedure.
Western Digital 120 GB FireWire/USB 2.0 Combo Hard Drive Reviews
Reminds me of the fairgrounds midway when the fair is on. . At night.

Whoever said this had an ugly casing was right. Lights in weird places, those neon or cold cathode tubes with the pink glow. Beyond that it's your average external drive with FireWire 400 and USB HS capabilities. Besides a drive experience that's given me the heebies, I'm still a dedicated Western Digital fan because all of their other products besides the WD2500 have been nice to me. And since this is essentially a different model I have yet to see any hiccups. I've thrown everything at it. Video, music, conversion to NTFS, mass copying and moving from one drive to this. And this is within the last week. I'll give you an update when 3 months are passed or if it has any problems.

UPDATE: Still going strong. I'm using the FireWire side of it now because I've heard that's faster than USB High Speeed even though USBHS is 480Mbps and FireWire is 400Mbps becuase it doesn't rely on the computer's CPU to move data or something (less resource dependence). I can't tell the difference so I've just left it connected to FireWire.
Western Digital 120 GB FireWire/USB 2.0 Combo Hard Drive Opinions
I bought one . I actually bought a 160gb. Wanted a LaCie, but time forced me to go to Fry's. After reading the specs, and paying 217.00 plus change, I'm thinking it's a little faster than the LaCie drive. (8.9 vs 10 ms for r/w, plus 8mb cache - can't understand how usb2 runs at 480 mbps, a f400 at 400. doesn't appear to be the case at all). I am very cautious however. I really believe that most of these drives suck for longevity. I've disabled all my system sleepers, and plan on powering down the drive each night. I just can't trust these things, and I'm hoping to sell it before the year is out, however if you want to believe the spec sheets, and you don't have a fw800 port, then this could be a good drive for you. I use it with my g4 powerbook, and as of this writing - it works flawlessly for capturing and editing video in final cut.

Cons Review
POS died after 12 months . I gave this HD 2 stars because I've been reading reviews of HDs lasting only days, so the 12 months of use I got out of this WD earned an extra star for its crappy review. I didn't even bother with the warranty, since it died exactly 1 week after it was up.
Total Data Loss . Well, I bought one 1.5 years ago. Then it just died. The computer stop seeing it when plugged in, and the disk would spin and spin and would not even turn off. I could not recover any data. The only thing more disappointing than the HDD was the customer service when I tried to troubleshoot the problem / recover the data. NEVER AGAIN!
Perfect for catastrophic data loss . This drive worked beutifully in the first 6 months in on of our school research laboratories, regardless of the infrequent unexplained miscommunication with the PC. After they trusted it for work and research data backup, done just once every 2 weeks, it suddenly gave clicking sounds and stopped working. After extended agony with the customer support, they simply got nothing. Surperisingly, when they talked about this subject with some of our collegues in our University, they discovered that many of us, in defferent departments, suffered from the same problem with different models of the Wistern Digital external hard drives (USB/Firewire).
After all the frustration and the torture with this piece of junk, I can say for sure, Buy WD if you are looking for the best machine to lose your data? Beleive me when I say Western Digital Hard Drives are absolutely the worst for your data storage. We've been there before.
