Solid Performance . With my older office unit finally biting the dust, I wound up replacing it with this model. This is my second purchase of this product. I picked up my other Transcend StoreJet 25 unit back in the spring of last year primarily to cover my photograph storage needs. What sold me on buying another one is the overall performance. Durability is a big factor too.
Out of the box this storage system packed with a 500GB external hard drive was up and running in no time. Its fitted with a one button setup on top of the unit. Simple to use, the drive can be set to remember the files/folders to store in the preferences folder. With the installed software package, scheduling backups and setting security levels is not that much of a task. File compression is always a good choice to remember. All in all, the jury is still out when it comes to the on board StoreJet software. Personally, I'm not a big fan of it. Firewire support for this model would have been ideal.
The StoreJet 25 is built around a standard 2.5 inch SATA hard disk that spins at 5,400 rotations per minute with 8MB of cache. Powered via USB port, the drive draws its juice directly from the host system. Speed read is rated up to 28 megs per second and write speeds cruised in at 24 megs. This system comes encased in a red/black or orange/black military grade, impact resistant shell. I use the black one for travel and this one for the office.
Built for portability, the unit measures 4.5" H x 3.2" W x 0.6" D. It weighs in at almost 8 ounces and comes with the standard Transcend 2 year product warranty. The manufacturer's website is surprisingly helpful and loaded with useful information. A toll free customer support phone number as well as supporting links are posted.
Like my previous purchase of this product, its all about overall performance. The StoreJet 25 is a durable and cost effective tool that has proven to me that it can go the distance.

As advertised . The drive arrived in good shape and functions exactly as advertised. It is a very attractive, compact device and gives the appearance of being quite sturdy. It was easy to install. The only complaint I have is that the software that comes with the purchase is a little balky. The pop-up menus that appear whenever the drive is attached are annoying and serve very little purpose. One can get rid of most of these. I find using Norton for back-ups much more reasonable and certainly more straightforward. In any case, it seems to be a great drive and I am happy with the purchase. Unlike other external drives I have owned, this one is truly portable. I just throw it into my briefcase or bag and go. I use it with an ACER One Aspire 9.1 inch netbook without any issues.

Works Great . This little hard drive has a nice look and feel. It works great. I was a little annoyed that it could only save 4 GB chunks, but then I reformatted it to NTFS with the included software and problem solved.

You Can't Go Wrong at Under $70 . I have ordered and installed many of these for various customers -- it's great. Very portable, large 500Gb data capacity, doesn't require its own separate power supply, and has the benefit of being able to withstand shocks better than many data backup devices. Comes with two USB connections but will often work with only one attached -- depends on the computer. There are two possible downsides: 1)if you have an older computer with limited USB ports, this sometimes requires two of them just for itself; 2) once the software is installed on the computer, I've found I have to create an icon on the desktop manually from the software program, as it does not create one by default.
Update on 4-23-11: Updating my previous post -- purchased another one and installed it today. It developed an interesting problem after the first backup on a Windows 7 PC (64-bit), namely all the software options and buttons appeared in Japanese, rather than English. Tried it on a Windows XP machine and it worked fine, in English. Back on the Windows 7 machine after a reboot, the problem with Japanese buttons and options remained. Waiting for a response from Transcend Tech Support. Note: this is the first time I've installed one on a Windows 7 64-bit machine. -nc

Transcend is all you need . I was looking for an external hard drive so I could transfer all my XP files before migrating into Windows 7. This drive worked flawlessly. Easy setup, no issues, worked as any hard drive should. Love that this doesn't need an additional power supply. It gets power directly from the USB port. The only downside I've heard of is this drive doesn't offer firewire. Personally it didn't matter to me as I'm using Windows and not Mac. But other than that, I highly recommend it.
All good now . I had written a bad review thinking that I needed two usb ports to power this drive ... which wasn't the case I found out later.
The drive is great, no complaints here, just wish they made the instructions a little more clear on why 2 usb connectors are supplied - for us not so computer savvy.

Cons Review
It's in Chinese. I speak only English. . After a few months the software's english changed to Chinese (or other oriental script that I cannot read). So now it is impossible for me to navigate.Transcend StoreJet 25 Portable External 500GB 2.5-Inch Hard Drive
Worried about Noise . This is the second Transcent StoreJet25 drive that I bought within a month. The first one (with gray couting) works like a charm and I was so impressed by its performance that I wanted to buy the second one. However, this one is really-really noisy. I can hear the spin running the whole time. And, what's worrying me even more is that it's giving me a sort of "power failure" (blackout) sound everytime I plug it out (even with safe plug out method). I think I will return it.
