Fast and easy alternative to other OS . I have been using Puppy Linux since version 2 something. Each revision has been an improvement with more features and more drivers.
I use a Live disc, but a thumb drive is another alternative. I still like and use various Windows programs, but Puppy allows me to surf the 'Net without virus protection. No one writes viri for Linux OS!
New revisions of Puppy come once or more a year. 4.3.1 is good, but Google supplies a lot of what makes the 'Net go 'round. Little by little Google things, like 'pubads,' now keep some web pages from opening. I recently upgraded to Lucid Puppy 5.0.1 and its browsers open things that no longer opened under 4.3.1.
With Puppy I can produce and edit MS Word documents in AbiWord. Puppy includes some interesting calculators and an excellent program for downloading YouTube videos as video or audio.
The file system in Puppy looks quite a bit different than in Windows, but after a while I got onto it and can save things in Puppy that I can later locate and open in Windows.
So far I have not had success at installing a printer in Puppy, even though there is a utility for doing this. I just save files and print from Windows.
All in all, Puppy is faster than Windows. It has a very small footprint and is a little bare bones, but very effective. Use it a little and you will like it a lot. But, getting the newest available version is definitely a good idea. Puppy is free.
If you do download Puppy, you get an ISO file. Double click on it in Windows. It will open its own CD burner to make a Live disk.
I learned by experience that I need to go into Windows and run Chkdsk, as well as Disc Defragmenter, periodically. Although I might hardly use Windows, Linux does things to the file arrangement in Windows that needs restoring now and then if Linux is to continue to work well.
