LG Electronics N2A2DD2 Network Storage Server N2A2DD2 Network Attached Storage
This review is from : N2A2DD2 Network Storage Server
Good entry level NAS but needs security upgrades . This is a nicely designed, quiet NAS device that provides excellent value for money.
Positives:
- It's fast and quiet
- Supports Time Machine out of the box
- Cheaper than just about any other NAS with RAID at the same capacity
- Decent user interface
- LG provide a DDNS service so you can access via the internet if needed
Negatives:
- The current web interface does not enable passwords with special characters, or passwords over a certain length (not sure exactly how much: 20 characters is too much, but 10 works). This dramatically reduces the security of the device out of the box. I've emailed LG to ask them to change this, and all they've said is that they will consider this for a future firmware release. I want to use TimeMachine over the internet, but won't be doing so until I can up the password security.
- The device allows FTP and FTPS, but not SFTP.
- No word yet on whether the Lion upgrade from Apple has broken compatibility, as it has done to many similar devices.
- At present it is impossible to disable an SMB share from being broadcast on the network, even if you switch all drives to AFP only. The device seems to be sharing a directory "cdrom" that cannot be seen from anywhere else in the configuration software. This seems to be an artifact of the same basic setup being duplicated across this device and another that has an optical drive.
- At present, like many other NAS devices on the market, the iTunes server does not work with any iTunes software after version 9.2
- And perhaps the biggest problem for some users: you can't change the drives without voiding the warranty.
I note that many of the negatives could be addressed in a firmware update, and I'm crossing my fingers.

No Where it says it doesn't work on iMac . No Where it says it doesn't work on iMac. Well, maybe I should have investigated a bit more, but I did a lot of research to pick this product. I wanted a shared central hard drive, that could be backed up for all of my family members to use...We all use macs and now, I'm stuck with this product...what an expensive paper wait. I'm still thinking what to do BC time has passed since my purchase and I can not return it anymore. Some one is going to get it at a great discount. I'm sure it is a great product and works like magic on a PC centric environment, but gave it 3 stars BC it should say it doesn't work on imac.

N2A2DD2 Network Storage Server Opinions
Not compatible with TimeMachine on MacOSX Lion as of 10/11 . LG promised an update by September 2011 to address the connection issues with TimeMachine on MacOSX Lion. Until they update the firmware, I'd stay away from LG NAS products. It's a shame they are so far behind their competition with this update. Then the support they provide on their site is weak as well when someone from outside the US asks a question they won't answer it and tell them to refer to the site hosted in their country to avoid having to say "sorry, we don't have a fix for that issue yet." and they hide behind the legal disclaimers that they can change their minds at any time. If they released an update, I'd be happy with the drive, but for me, it's not what I purchased - they still claim support for TimeMachine on 10.5+.

LG N2A2DD2 - Great for a home user . I had been deliberating for some time on what I need in a NAS. On one forum I had read that Synology was the best NAS with great features, half of which I would never use :)
Before I bought this NAS, I went to the LG website and read the entire manual. It does everything I need from it: http, ftp, torrents, DLNA, RAID 0,1/JBOD, multiple user setup with access controls, silent and low power consumption, remote web access.
I saw it on sale, immediately bought it and started playing with it. There was a major firmware update from LG which required drive formatting. Once done, I was ready to go. I setup RAID 1 (1TB mirror).a. The installation tool is very simple and guides you through everything - accounts/ password, remote access (it automatically configures your router), shared folders, config type (RAID/ JBOD), maps your drives to your PC. All this while it was on the network.
b. The write speed for me so far isn't great but that is due to my Wireless G network. A wireless N router is on the way.
c. I did stream a 720p movie on my TV via wireless using DLNA - no buffering at all. My TV automatically saw the drive. I streamed music remotely on WiFi using my android app and no issues.
d. The drives are really silent. Some Cons:
a. Drives are not user replaceable (without voiding warranty) - which means I need to back up data somewhere else. I have a portable drive with the same folder structure as the NAS and I perform folder syncs. That way if I ever need to send these drives to LG, I don't have to worry about data.Overall very happy with the purchase and LG in general :)

Cons Review
does NOT support time machine for Lion 10.7.2 . opposed to what their ads say, as of today the N2A2 does NOT support Apples Time Machine functionality on Lion 10.7.2
It took ages to come up with a firmware upgrade to at least rudimentary support AFP but Time Machine still does NOT work.

Needs lots of work! . I own 2 of these units for file storage and backups all PC based. I've invested in a Macbook Air and wondered why I couldn't connect to the LG-NAS. Come to find out that Mac's and LG-NAS won't talk to each other! Not good. Also there as an issue where one of the LG-NAS units would drop off line from the network constantly. Did some research and upgraded the firmware. That did the trick. As a part time IT, I'm not real impressed with this unit. A majority of my hardware is Netgear based. Should have stuck with the Netgear NAS units. See what happens when you try to save a couple of bucks! You get what you pay for.
