Ideal Home NAS . This unit delivers everything it promises, and has everything (for me at least) needed for a home network. It uses wired, not wireless, to connect to your Router (this is good, as wired throughput is much better than when using wireless.) You can then access it via wireless anyway if you have a wireless router, this just dictates where it gets placed physically. I drop files from all the computers in the house to it, as well as use it as a home media server. (The DLNA streaming feature allows us to use our media on our DLNA-compatible blu-ray in another room). I also like that it is easy to open and swap out a bad drive, unlike many of the other models i looked at. I also like that it has USB in the front and back, so that it can be a USB network print server (works great with our HP OfficeJet) as well as being able to plug in external storage and back up the NAS to it with a single button-press. (I really like that the button is used to back up the NAS itself, and not to try to trigger some script on the computer like with other devices.)
All in all, I love this unit and would highly recommend it.

Netgear Customer Service . I love the notion of having a file and web server in my home. While I am no server expert, I have advanced skills and can solve about any computer issue.
I configured the NAS with no problem. The only issue I have is I can't see the device via HTTP over the www (outside my network).
I have spent frustrating HOURS with technical support. These people are capable of solving simple problems for customers that have little technical skill, but are unable to solve the more complex issues.
I even sent a letter to the VP of sales and asked him for his help. I need to speak with someone that knows more than me as I have spent hour's trouble shooting on my own. The technical people I speak with aren't able to solve the problem... Can you believe that the VP of sales never followed up with me and never had anyone call me?
Right now I am stuck with a device that can only be seen from within side my network. I didn't buy this device for that sole reason.

Double check your backups . I transferred 80 gigs of pictures to the drive. So I thought. The final destination showed the same amount of bytes as the original destination. The file structure was identical, however, none of the files in the subdirectories actually transferred so there were a lot of empty subdirectories. Had to buy an undelete software to hopefully recover years of photos.

Very happy with this purchase . I am very happy with this purchase. I configured the NAS with no problem and using it by accessing from any PC on my network. I am using it for more than a year with no any problem.

Netgear Ready NAS DUO . This thing has so many options FTP server, HTTP access for photo sharing, user access restriction, dual print server, the list just goes on and on. This is the second home NAS unit I have purchased. The first one just had a built in print server with it. We have all of our photos, Videos, thousands of soungs and music videos on our NAS and we can access our data from any of our computers in the house even wireless. Now everyone can print from anywhere. Best of all we know our data is being backed up at all times since 1 TB drive duplicates everything the first TB drive does and if either drive has a problem the NAS unit will send me an email letting me know so I can replace the drive. I recently retired from IT for a world wide company and this is the closest thing I have seen to what I used for large company setups but with easy interface. I highly recomend this product.
Really nice little box with a few minor hiccups . My craviting for more goodies aside, this box really hits the mark.I really love the X-RAID feature where it keeps two copies of your backup in sync, and in case of one hd failure, you can swap it out for a new one, and the box will then sync the old and new box.I also appreciate the FTP server it provides, which allows me to share and share alike.A few points nox however...
- Every now and again you have to restart the box to be able to access it desktop control panel.- The manuals provided are a bit too generic... I find myself forced to google whenever I really need something answered.- The led lights are VERY small and hard to read.- The reset switch that can be used for password recovery is scary - depending on how long you hold it (while powering up), you run the risk of wiping out your box completely! Excellent almost. . I just placed an order for my second Readynas Duo. Done with backing up PC's to thumb drives, Cd's or DVD's. Internet access is great once it is configured. I could never get the remote software to work, so I'd looked around the web for directly setting up web access.
Cons Review
ReadyNAS has been ReadyRETURNED . I was excited about the features published on the ReadyNAS Duo. And, to its credit, it works just as advertised for local file sharing (CIFS and AFP). However, I encountered one problem after another when working with HTTP/S. After ~4+ hours on the phone with Netgear tech support we identified one new bug and they were still unable to resolve the other issue where a user could upload or create files via the web, but received a 404 file not found error when trying to read the same file. This worked as expected when the same user accessed the same file via AFS. This only happened on one share, while another share with the same permissions worked just fine.
Also, though the product doesn't make any claims to the contrary, the web management interface - as well as the user web interface - were so slow they were almost unusable. This is with the NAS and PC (well, MAC in this case) connected to the same private network. I'm also 99% sure that one time making normal changes via the web management interface that the web server on the NAS crashed. I could still upload files, but it took a reboot to get the server back online.
I was somewhat somewhat surprised at how bad the tech support really was - even after working with 4 different and very nice people. There were very long delays whenever I provided them with additional information and I'm still unsure what they were doing during this time. What I believe should have taken minutes to walk through took hours. Also, the voice quality for every one of my calls to tech support made it very difficult to hear which made a challenging situation even more difficult.
In summary, I do like:
* CIFS and AFP support and config
* Ability to get root access
* Price (look for the rebate offers on some model - not mentioned on Amazon but sill applicable)
But I don't like:
* HTTP/S access is buggy
* Management interface is s..l..o..w....
* Tech Support

some features simply could not be made to work -- do not buy . I am fairly tech savy so when I read the reviews prior to buying I figured that I could make this work with my Win7 computers on my home network.
Basic set up -- the unit was fairly easy to set up for backup. The web management interface is VERY VERY slow. When the other reviews complain about the usbilty of the interface, believe it.
The unit autoconfigured itself on a random IP address and then I had a security error because the certificate and the IP address did not match. I fixed the IP address, changed by home router address range and imported the certificate to make the error go away.
The backup scripts work fairly well and were easy to setup. The alerting via email and other capbilities also worked well.
What did not work -- I bought a unit to consolidate iTunes songs from different family computers. The Itunes server was simply unusable. Time and again I could reach the server ONCE, after that the connection was refused by the Netgear unit. I contacted Netgear support by email and received instructions to reinstall the firmware and the OS from the flash memory. The procedure was fairly simple to use and did not destroy the data. I was able to get further into the iTunes server ONCE and attempt to configure the media directories to upload. However the original error returned shortly and I was unable to use the feature.
I'm not going to bash their tech support; they all seemed very nice. BUT it seemed to be a very fragile configuration and I have simply lost confidence it would work and remain working. Instead I am returning the unit to Amazon (thank you Amazon) and am ordering a Synology unit for a few more $$ but hopefully easier to configure and more stable in operation.
