This review is from : Kingston Digital, Inc. DataTraveler R500 16 GB Flash Drive DTR500/16GB
THIS is the one to get -- BEST value in USB drives . There's a huge choice in USB drives these days. The most common thing that people overlook is that beyond fancy packaging and memory size, not all USB drives are created equal. Most USB drives read/write at rates of 10mb/5mb. If you don't transfer large numbers of files or multi-gigabyte files, this is perfectly fine. However, if you do find yourself wanting better performance, then it's time to upgrade to the R500.

The general pricing of standard Kingston 16Gb USB drives is about $8-$10 cheaper than the R500, yet, the R500 is 3 to 4 times faster, reading at 30Mb and writing at 20Mb. This makes an ENORMOUS difference if transferring many files or very large ones. Last but not least, if you utilize the ReadyBoost* feature in Windows, you'll have much better performance with a faster USB device. The price difference really ends up paying back in the long run, as you'll be more productive every time you use it. It's a no-brainer choice!

Some of the casings on USB drives are hard plastic that will crack/chip if dropped or struck hard. Some are also made of a flimsy rubberized casing that will bend under force and fail to protect the circuitry. The R500 has a thick firm rubberized casing that is slightly flexible. This makes it very easy to drop and bang the drive without causing damage. I loaded mine with a bunch of files, picked it up and then slammed it down on a hard floor (with cap on). The R500 survive without a scratch and all files were still present. The cap is a little loose when placed on the back end, but it's not so bad that it'll easily fall off when the drive is mounted.

PROS:
-- Very fast; nearly 3 to 4 times faster than standard USB drives
-- Reliable; Kingston makes quality products that last and last (I have never had one fail, oldest being 8 years).
-- Rugged; Very tough casing, better than most.
-- Tasteful lighting; there is a small blue LED that clearly indicates usage--better than the enormous or anemic ones you'll see on other USB drives.
-- The adapter cover fits on pretty well and allows the USB drive to stand upright when not in use.
-- Casing design is very cool, orange on black graphic design embedded in the rubber surface (won't rub off).
-- 5 year warranty

CONS:
-- It is slightly wider than your average USB drive and may interfere with other USB devices if your USB ports are very close together
-- The end cap does not fit tightly on the back, but it is very secure on the front.
-- The rubberized material is a little slick; I'd rather it have more of a gripping texture.
-- There is a loop hole for the lanyard, but no grooves to help tighten and secure the cord; the rubberized surface allows it to easily loosen and move around.

*ReadyBoost is an option available in Windows Vista and 7 anytime you insert a USB drive. In the properties, a "ReadyBoost" tab appears. Selecting to activate it allows Windows to use the USB drive for disk cache. This is MUCH faster than using the hard drive, so a faster USB drive will be a plus.
Kingston Digital, Inc. DataTraveler R500 16 GB Flash Drive DTR500/16GB Reviews
A nice fast drive . A little pricy, but this flash drive does deliver near the advertised speed (lightyears ahead of my previous flash drive). I'm using mine to store a bootable installer of OS X Lion and for general file transfer. Handles multi-GB video files quickly.

As others have noted, the cap doesn't really fit well on the rear of the drive like pictured. It is very snug on the plug-end, though. The body is an odd mix of slippery and grippy, but seems like it will protect the drive inside well enough.
Kingston Digital, Inc. DataTraveler R500 16 GB Flash Drive DTR500/16GB Opinions
Very fast and worth it . The form factor is great and the speeds are as advertised. I was moving large files very often and need a drive that would transfer quickly. This really fit the bill. I can move GB of files in minimal time (instead of 30+ minutes with other drives).
Nice looking drive that's also fast. . I was about to get the Patriot Xporter XT, but went with this guy instead and I don't regret it. According to the customer reviews and speed tests on the XT, I'm getting faster speeds with my DT R500. Look at the attached pic to see speeds.

My two gripes are that the casing is too flexible and the cap cannot be safely attached to the back of the drive. It would be better to call this drive "rubberized."
Groovy but pricey . I shot my BIL's wedding and needed a flash drive to deliver the results. I had an 8GB that was too small so I went shopping for 16's. The cheaper models have substantially slower ratings, and it seems anecdotally that they have higher failure rates, so I spent the extra $ for this one. It seems to be fairly recently released - perhaps the price will drop over time. It wrote at the rated speed. As others have said, the cap is kind of a pain - it doesn't hold snugly onto the tail end of the unit, and there's not even a slot to thread the tether through. MS-DOS users with badly-designed hardware may find that the thick rubber impinges on immediately-adjacent USB slots.
Fast and affordable just a bit large . Cost $31.99 at the time (a few months ago) and was well worth the price for the size and transfer speeds. Ran benchmarks which showed read and write speeds to be as advertised. My only complaint is that the thick rubber at the plug end makes the drive fairly wide (7/16" x 7/8") and could potentially block another USB port or make the drive difficult to fit into a tight space.I bought this to use as additional storage for my Xbox 360, but it was too big to fit in the USB port on the back. Fortunately I had a short USB cable extension that did, so I wasn't forced to leave it plugged into one of the front USB ports where I'd rather not have it. I'm still giving it 5 stars because the performance is excellent.
NOT 16GB but 14.8BG . The thumbdrive is fine but it is not 16GB it is actually 14.8 GB. I dont have a problem with this except the advertising is very misleading. I compared the packaging of my partrot 16GB and they are the same in terms of specified storage. The only difference is the Patriot actually has 16GB of memory. The read speed is about what is advertised at 27.75 MB/sec(should be at 30MB/sec), the write speed though was about 14.75 MB/sec(should be at 20MB/sec). I used a free software called USBeview to determine these speeds. It's not a bad product but I think they made this thumbdrive seem like something it truly isn't. Also the cap on it doesnt really fit on it good but it did come with a lanyard. The outside material is rubber and almost feels slippery, like there is no grip on it. The reason I got this product was because my partiot 16GB thumbdrive broke on me in a month. I think it was too flimsy in the inside. Hopefully kingston survives longer than my partriot.
