Sorry to disagree with the other review but.... . I have had my device since November 2007 (when I switched to Mac). Apple had just introduced time machine and so I wanted to have a drive. I soon found out that this is not enough storage for time machine so I upgraded and this became a backup drive.

I have loved the fact that the usb cord is connected to the device. I carry it in my backpack (in a side compartment) and it goes with me everywhere. It has almost been a year so I am considering other options. Hard drives will always fail at some point. That is just the way things go, so never put all your eggs in any one basket. That said, this little device has been invaluable for me, saving my neck on a number of times when I could not carry all the files I needed on my computer but my handy little drive was right there with the stored files.

The device is very fast and worked with my PC when importing files to the new Mac. (Basically I dragged everything from the pc onto the drive and then hooked it up to the mac and dragged them onto the desktop.)
Apricorn Aegis 250 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive with Integrated Cable A25-USB-250 (Grey) Reviews
I love this external HDD! . I hardly ever give 5 star reviews, but this thing is perfect! Small size, large capacity, no power cord needed. Just plug into a USB port and back up your data. And easy to carry off site or traveling.

I never understood why these Aegis Apricorn HDD's weren't more popular. Mostly what you see are Iomega and Western Digital for some reason. Apricorn HDD's are far superior IMHO. I've had all three for many many years. Iomega gives me a lot of grief and their support sucks. They are so overrated. I've had their other products too, like a DVD drive, but will never buy Iomega again. WD was better, but clunky and noisy. Aegis is best! Never a problem, light weight, no power cord, and it just works!
Great little drive . Excellent - easy to use - compact - self powered and great software included. Plenty of room to back up whole HD images for both of my laptops.
Apricorn Aegis 250 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive with Integrated Cable A25-USB-250 (Grey) Opinions
Flawless after 19 months of rugged use . In my graduate program we were each given one of these drives when we start school. That was 19 months ago and I've been hauling mine around in my backpack almost every day since then. The thing just keeps on working. I've never even heard of the company that makes these things but all I know is mine has taken it's share of abuse and had no problems.

I haven't done any formal tests, but like another reviewer said the thing seems pretty fast.

I do also really like the fact that the usb cord is built in. I don't know why western digital and the bunch don't at least offer drives like this.

Good product.
Good light drive . This drive is lighter and smaller than many other external hard drives with 2 1/2" disks. The smaller size is, in my opinion, worth the small extra cost.
A solid drive . This drive is very easy to use and with a portability that can't be beat. I have had one for years now and am very happy with how it works. I will buy another one when I need to upgrade.
Love these drives... . I have several of these drives of various sizes and ages. They are great for taking on the road and backing up my laptop. After a long location shoot I will take one of these and ship it back to my office as a backup. Having the cord attached is a great feature. I also have one of these compact drives in my safety deposit box with my most important archived images and data. I've considered getting the keypad password protected versions, but I think it would just make the TSA more interested in my gear.

Cons Review
Clicking noise of death... . I have the 60G version of this drive
The first died just under warranty, and was eventually replaced by Apricorn. The new one died just OUT of warranty and I was told to go away. No consideration for previous problems, just "too bad".

The clicking noise is a VERY bad sign.

Never again.
It only worked for 1 day . Based on the other good reviews, it's possible I just got a bad one. By the way, I did not get it from Amazon, so it's not their fault. I got it at work and it was brand new still in the unopened cellophane plastic covered box. The problem is that it is not reliably recognized by my computer. I have windows XP, but i tried it on a pc with Vista and a different one with XP. It sometimes gets recognized but then disappears and never comes back on all of them. I suspect a faulty USB wire inside the device as it may not have proper strain relief inside to accommodate the overly tight wire tension and it pulls too tight when removing it from the storage slot around the device. It also does not have any cooling fan and the case is plastic so no heat-sink there either. If you need a "Dependable" external storage drive for backup of your important files, I would strongly advise against the 500GB Aegis 2.5" USB2.0. It is over $100.00 for this plastic el-cheapo, so you will find much better options elsewhere with aluminum cases and maybe even a fan for similar price. I recommend AMS Venus D series enclosures for reliability: [...]
THE WORST INVESTMENT I EVER MADE... . Crashed after 4 days. Lost all data on the hard drive. Contacted customer service at Aegis, you would think that someone would care to answer !!! Of course not, why answer the customer, once he has bought this piece of junk and it has crashed, why should anyone at Aegis care.

I would not recommend this hard drive even if it was the only hard drive available in the market
