Hitachi 0G00026 1 TB - Hard Drive 0G00026 1036

Perfect! . I can only recommend the G-Safe system.
I use them for a mirrored backup (not sure if that would be considered RAID 1) with Time Machine on an iMac 10,1. I had a set of two 500 GB G-safe drives before, used them for about two years, archived them and got these two 1 TB drives here to replace them (to my surprise they came in sturdy leather cases for storage and transport). Since my iMac 10,1 has 1 TB capacity, they are less likely to be filled up soon. They're very easy to replace. Both sets work perfectly, they're fast, rather silent and very reliable. The cooling system seems fine and the aluminum enclosure feels super robust. Never had any issues.
I would give them five stars but since I do the TM backup only once a month I can't really tell about their longevity when constantly on (the cooling system seems to do a good job though) and since I never had any issues I don't know about warranty and client service. I hope I won't have to use the latter two anytime soon.
If you're looking for a safe backup solution this is your choice. Except of the Drobos I don't know of any other method/maker I would use. The only downside: unlike with Drobos you can't use other drives than the standard G-Safe drives (at least it's not recommended) but the Drobo is more expansive and I wasn't really convinced about their plastic enclosure.
I used to daisy-chain different mobile/external drives, for example Western Digital My Book and LaCie D (FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and even combos), three of them crashed after about a year or so and one of them didn't even backup anymore for a while (since I had the backup process automated I didn't realize that). In one case I wasn't even able to retrieve any data after the crash. Forget warranties: if you have a LaCie they won't be responsible since the disk inside is from another maker (don't remember if it was Maxtor or WD) and their warranty only covers for the enclosure, and of course the maker of the disk doesn't feel responsible because it's a LaCie product. Great! With other words you can't afford failure. Therefore mirroring/RAID makes sense. If one drive fails, you still have your data on the second disk, and if you don't throw them both out the window from the 14th floor it's rather unlikely for both disks to fail at the same time. Not cheap, sure, but cheaper than a data-retrieving service, specially since you might not even be able to scratch all the data from the disk (and if you can you might have the hassle of searching files from a massive amount of renamed, numbered data - awful, believe me!).
I used as well other external/mobile G-drives and never had any issues.
