This review is from : Seagate FreeAgent Pro 320 GB 3.5" USB 2.0/eSATA External Hard Drive
Good hard drive . I chose this hard drive because the price and size was right AND it got decent reviews on CNET.

This is a solid hard drive. It's cool looking but more importantly, it does what it's supposed to do -- i.e. store backups. There isn't anything particularly flashy about that. I've had it for roughly a month. I wouldn't expect to see any problems and I haven't.

Regarding the 'cool looking' comment... If it's important to you that your hard drive isn't an eyesore, this is an aesthetically pleasing hard drive. It's especially cool when you turn on the light. Currently you have two options regarding the orange light -- always on, always off. I would have preferred that there was an option to turn on the light only when the drive was 'active' but that's a small complaint. It looks good either way.

The software included is a trial version, good for 30 days. I believe it costs about $30 to get the full version. I have not upgraded and am not sure if I will. The software simply automates the backup process. Since it can be done relatively easy without the software, I wouldn't purchase this hard drive based on that.

I believe the ability to backup data and access it from a remote location is what distinguishes the 'Pro' line from the standard line. In retrospect, I don't believe I really need that functionality and if your data volume is large enough, Seagate charges extra. Again, since I don't currently use it, I probably would have been better off with the standard version for a few bucks less.

Love the functionality! . I love how the software for this product automatically does a back up for changed files. It is seamless and I cannot imagine this product working any better.
Seagate FreeAgent Pro 320 GB 3.5" USB 2.0/eSATA External Hard Drive Opinions
FreeAgent Pro is a winner . The drive automatically installs some pretty useless software, but the drive itself seems pretty solid. I don't recommend removing the USB connection while the computer is on since, like most devices where "safely remove hardware" is required, the success is a hit or miss affair.

Speed with USB is adequate for video editing which is a good stress test.
Great price looks cool and awesome quality . This is a seagate hardrive in there so you know it's going to last, plus it's SATA so you can hook up to the USB and get a good 300 megs/sec transfer without issue. Backups of my PC are a breeze. I also use this to back up my parents business computers and it works great for that, very fast.

I like how the orange area is only orange when it's on, other wise it's kind of a smoke color.

Remember Seagate has a 5 year warranty on their harddrives, so you know you have nothing to worry about.
Great HD but must purchase backup software . This external hard drive has worked wonderfully for the last month that I've had it. The only complaint I have is that I was under the impression that the backup software is included in the price of the product. To my surprise, only a 30-day trial is provided and you must purchase the backup software at the end of the 30-days.
Easy to install and use FreeAgent Pro 320 GB Drive . I ordered this product to use mainly as a backup device for various files on several PC's. I found it quite easy to install, configure and use. I used the USB attachment as it was the easiest and using the enclosed software, identified the directories I wanted to be backed up. It did a one time backup of those directores and it will now backup the changes to either the files or directories in the background. What I do like about it is it will not do backup's that interfere with the application, i.e. it waits until you shut down the application. It is also easy to configure additional directories to be backed up.

I would recommend this drive for any who want it as a backup device. Although I do not use it as a secondary drive, I am sure it would work just as good for that purpose.

I might mention the price was very competitive, probably lower than most for that size. It also looks good on the desk, nice yellow light and looks like a statue or at least something good, it's not ugly like some.
Good but eSATA issue . The drive works well enough thus far, except that when I use it via eSATA, Windows Vista doesn't recognize it as an "external hard drive," but instead as another internal hard drive (I think). The whole reason I bought this is because I am using Windows Live One Care and it recommends backing up data externally. I decided Microsoft is right, and backing up data is a wise choice, so I bought this drive and an eSATA adapter that just plugs right into a SATA II port on the motherboard and then fits in a slot by the other PCI ports on the back of the tower. Then you just use an eSATA to eSATA cable to attach this drive directly to the motherboard via the adapter. This provides the advantage of eSATA speed which is considerably faster than USB, and it doesn't use up a USB hub either since so many peripherals seem to use USB these days. But Live One Care doesn't find the drive as an option to backup your data this way. At least not any way I have figured out yet. So, after all this, I have it hooked up via USB to perform the backup. It was still a good deal at 100 bucks, but I specifically bought it for the eSATA. I would have bought one with firewire had I known of the eSATA issue since I have firewire hub not being used on my tower. Oh well.
Seagate makes an excellent portable hard drive . This drive looks good, performs good, is a great buy. It does have some software that installs on your computer when you first set the drive up to connect to your computer. This software places an Icon on the bar accross the bottom of your screen and it is constantly popping up & asking you to back up your hard drive. I'd suggest not installing the software if you just want to use this drive to store pictures, videos, or music on, as the pop-ups get very annoying.

Cons Review
Mine broke after a month . The hard drive just stopped working after a month. Watch out! You should get a back up for this back up.
Disappointed but finally a solution . This was always failing with errors, and finally I sent it back RMA to seagate. They sent me a new one, same model, but the bottom interface plate was a bit different.
I tried it both usb and esata, and problems continued.
Realizing I was not going to get it to work, I removed the drive from the housing and mounted it internally in my computer. Since then NO PROBLEMS and running fine.
The drive is a sata interface one and I only needed to buy a sata cable to install.
HOPEFULLY Seagate has fixed this and the newer models do not have the problem. This is now showing on the Seagate website as the "Classic" drive and is no longer available.
Now Leary of SEAGATE products.
