SW Installation took 8-10 minutes and only requires to be installed on ONE machine.

The files are generally reference Photos and 3Dmodels that are used and shared between these machines.

Test file: A Folder containing 2 files; One 4KB (1,375 bytes) and the other 1,088,275,968 for a total of 1.01GB (1,088,277,343 bytes)
Test condition: The only file transfer done at the time.

The speed is very good. It is NOT the fastest which is the IOCELL NETDISK NDAS 351 but the Iocell does NOT allow more than ONE Mac to write to the netdisk in NDAS (Multip[le READ, single WRITE). The difference is about 2-3 seconds per transfer on a 1GB file. That is very negligible for me or almost 99% of people who would use a netdisk.
Note that deleting ANY file or folder from the netdisk will NOT put the item(s) in TRASH but it DELETES the file(s) or Folder(s) immediately. While it can be a bit inconvenient for mistakes but it is great for the fact that the available space shown at the bottom of the window is always REAL. A warning window does pop up giving you a chance to cancel in case of mistake.
The drive enclosure runs silent, it runs cooler than almost any drive I have. The temperature normally is LESS than putting your hand under your arm.
The blue LED light in front is not very bright and not distracting. It does blink during file transfers.
The enclose is small and has a nice sturdy aluminum casing with a base foot that is very stable.
I consider the life of an external HD on FW800, 400 or eSATA to be about 3-4 years. I anticipate this drive to work this length like the other 7 externals that I have from LaCie. 2 of them are dead after 4 and 4.5 years.
I have also set up the information on this Netdisk to be backed up every night to another LaCie 2TB in case of any failure.

Works great after driver update . I have been using this drive for about 5 weeks now. I bought it for backups of my PC. After reading some of the reviews I was a little hesitant to get it, but it seemed overall to be the best drive available. My initial backup was rather disappointing. It took 24 hours to backup 29G/163K files. I was starting to think about returning it. Then, the admin control panel for the drive indicated there was a driver update available.
After getting the driver update things have been much better. That same backup now takes about an hour, using the included software (Genie Backup Manager Pro). I am not using file compression because I want to be able to use the standard explorer to get any needed files when the time comes. I am running a 100M Ethernet and have seen the backup use 90+% of the net capacity while transfering files. The PC is a new i7 processor, so it is quick. There are lull periods during the backup; I assume while the software is determining what to backup next.
My only complaint is with the backup software. Comparing it with the software that came with my older backup drive; it is harder to find a backed-up file if I need to. I have not tried the restore features of Genie Backup Manager; so, this complaint may be addressed there. My older backup drive's software organized the backup in latest, 2nd oldest, and so on directories so it was easy to find the first, second and 3rd oldest version of a specific file. Genie Backup Pro just makes a copy, organized by the date of the backup. So, if I want something that I changed a while ago, I have to search all the backups until I find it. Someday, I may try the restore capabilities of the software and see how they handle this. For now, it is not a priority.

Excellent Drive . Easy to set up. Stays connected all of the time and recognized by all the computers on my home network. Fast for the price. I like it much better than the Western Digital Worldbook that I have.

Like it a lot - some minor complaints . I've had this drive for a few months now and generally like it. It has a small footprint, lots of storage capacity, and was pretty easy to set up. The user interface is decent but not totally intuitive -- I had to mess around with the Public and Private shares to get my various systems (1 Windows 7, 2 XP, Samsung TV) to see it.
For a while I was having a problem where the drive would be on but not accessible. I could only wake it up by unplugging/replugging it -- flipping the on/off switch wasn't sufficient. I have the drive set to go into Eco Mode when it's idle and overnight and it seemed like the drive wasn't waking up. On a whim I tried changing the setting for the blue status light -- I had turned it off, so I changed it to stay on. The problem went away. Coincidence? Maybe. Tech support was very responsive but didn't have any suggestions other than a complete refresh of the drive.
My only complaint -- and my reason for giving it 4 stars -- is that the drive spins up needlessly. I have it set to go into power-saving Eco Mode when it's idle for 20 minutes and at night, but it spins up throughout the day when I know I'm not using it (although maybe some Windows system service is pinging it). It also spins up when it shuts down for the night. It doesn't have a fan, so it's relatively quiet, but it's right next to my desk and I can tell when it spins up. If it would go into Eco Mode and stay off/silent until needed I'd give it 5 stars.
Addendum: I think I've figured out why the drive spins up during the day. The Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service (wmpnetwk.exe) was accessing the disk periodically. I disabled Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service in the Windows services control panel and also turned off the option to "show music from Windows Media Servers" in my Sonos music system (under General/Advanced Options) and the problem stopped. The drive still spins up twice when it shuts down for the night. That's annoying (and seems unnecessary) enough for me to keep my rating at 4 stars, but I'd bump up to 4.5 stars if that
was an option.
2nd addendum: Well, back to 4 stars. I applied a firmware update and now the drive spins up more than ever. I contacted tech support and they said "The device has its own operating system that has its own activities involving checking if it still has network access, indexing and other behind-the-scenes operations. Even without any active connections it will still have a variety of self-diagnostic work that can occur, while it is powered on. I apologize for any frustration or inconvenience, but while it is powered on, it will periodically spin up independently." Tech support is really responsive, but can't do anything about the issue.

Solid dependable great support Mac and Windows compatible . I was looking for home network-attached storage (NAS), a place to store files I would share across devices. I have several 1TB LaCie drives that I use as backups directly connected to each laptop/desktop, but I was going more for the network file sharing than backups here. The 2TB size, my good experiences and comfort with LaCie drives, and my need for Mac Snow Leopard, WindowsXP(SP3) and Windows7(64-bit) support made this one of the few devices I could find and it was at an attractive price point. I've had this in place just shy of 4 months now, with not a glitch. I took one of my other 1TB LaCie drives and daisy-chained it to the NAS giving me 3TB total. The additional drive mated quickly and works very well. I partitioned the 3TB into some public and some private folders, all working as desired.
Several reviewers have commented on file transfer speeds. In my environment, the NAS is Ethernet-attached to my AT&T Uverse router and sits right next to it. One laptop is also Ethernet-attached to the router, but all other devices are on my encrypted wireless network. Since the wireless portion of the network is probably my weakest/slowest link, the speed of the drive itself doesn't seem to be a factor for me. Also, I rarely transfer files larger than a few MB and these are moved quickly enough for me. By way of example, I can open a 4MB *.pdf file on my wireless Mac in Preview in 2 sec. I have not intended to use this as a media server where speeds become more important. A second example: a 727MB *.avi file transferred from the LaCie backup disk attached to my MacBookPro through the wireless LAN to the NAS in 3 minutes with lots of other users on the wireless and wired portion of my network. Perfect! . What can I say other than it works as advertised, it is a quality built product and the manufacturer stands behind it. This is my seventh LaCie drive in the last five years (all still functional) ... I was a big Maxtpr fan until their stuff turned to junk.
The product is well packaged and when you open it, everything you need to hook up is in there - PS, cables, quick connect instructions. Hook up to my Appleshare Extreme wireless router was a piece of cake ... plug and go. The Mac version of the software installed quickly and glitch free. Configuring the drive on the network was easy but I hit a connection issue on one of three computers hooked up to my network when used with Time Machine. A quick call to LaCie got me in touch with a knowledgeable tech and she solved the problem within a few minutes (just a "button" I neglected to click).
The device works perfectly with Time Machine and all three Macs, both wireless and wired to my network. I backup off site anyway as I am a huge believer in data redundancy, but now I also have three computers backing up automatically, on the same drive in a secure area of my house (dry basement). I personally think Amazon's price for the 2 gig model is very good.
In my experience (not vast but not inconsiderable either), LaCie makes high quality gear and stands behind it as advertised. I buy their drives with confidence and I shop Amazon with the same confidence.

If you just backup to a drive hooked up to your computer, it's better than nothing but not ideal for data security. If you backup to a NAS drive located in a somewhat secure area of your home (dry and fire-resistant), you are in good shape. If you backup offsite (either on the net or to small HD's locked in a bank vault) and you back up to a NAS drive and you back up to a local drive on your computer, you are in data safety heaven. I do this on all three of my computers, never lifting a finger and never even think about it. I have hourly backups on time machine to two locations (local computer and NAS) and a daily backup offsite, all accomplished without human intervention. Oh, by the way, the offsite stuff is encrypted. I crashed a work/personal PC once and lost a good chunk of the data that makes up my life. You can't put a price on that, especially when backing up correctly is so easy these days.

Best Buy of the year!!!! . Extraordinary product! Its fanless operation is great, super quiet. The software it comes with is super easy to use. It allows you to login in remotely and download or upload files. It also has a torrent download machine, it is great to download really big files. It is like having your own internet cloud.

Buy this NAS . Nice unit that works with 8 of my 9 computers. The one with which it does not work was originally designed for Vista (Ugh!) so I down graded it to XP Pro. Had a hard time finding all the drivers so I'm betting this is the problem. Am going to upgrade this computer to Windows 7 and I fully expect the problems to go away.
A little slow when the network is loaded, but this is to expected. Setup is a breeze. Five minutes for the 1st computer, a minute or so for all others.
Definately an improvement over the cheaper Buffalo NAS.

Much better than previous Lacie NAS . I purchased this because my previous Lacie mini NAS drive (500MB) failed after only 3 years, just past the warranty period. The hard drive inside failed. I was a little leary in purchasing another Lacie device, but their customer support is very good and I know their products are usually very good.This newer model is substantially improved. First, it no longer has a fan to cool it (which I think was unnecessary before anyway). The inside only consists of a hard drive and a small circuit board. It is completely sealed and just uses the outside aluminum case for cooler (which hardly gets warm). This model also runs much quieter than the previous one. The software that it runs (linux based) is much more improved as well. The web interface is easier to use and you can also control more things, like turning off the blue light on the front and letting it go into sleep mode at specified times to save money. Also, I am able to stream photos and listen to music from my DirecTV box with this. The previous model had this same capability, but never worked right and would constantly hang. This one works flawlessly and is easy to setup. I really like this, as you can show guests pictures right on your TV. It comes in handy.I highly recommend this device. It also has a 2nd partition that you can use to connect a computer directl to it for USB storage drive. The only downside with it is that this partition is separate - you can not view the other partition at all if you connect it with a usb cable.
nice drive . I've had this drive set up for 6 weeks or so and have been happy with the results. It seems reliable, works consistently, and was easy to set up. Data rates don't seem lightning quick and the internal software does not seem to like Safari (I have been successful using Firefox), but otherwise I have not had any problems and I would recommend to anyone looking for an inexpensive networkable hard drive, especially Mac users.
