Fast thruput sleek looks runs cool -- feature-rich Editor's Choice . PCWorld's Editors Choice rating persuaded me to plunge into this all-too-often disappointing market. Foremost, the FreeAgent runs cool (just hand warm), it has an external powersupply (critical, as any mechanical device draws lots of juice from USB port - shortening battery life, etc). There is an on-off switch (surprisingly many units lack it); the modular design not only looks good, but provides connectivity options to select USB, USB/eSATA or firewire connection. Nice touch, the drive comes pre-formatted for the NTFS file system. Even after 3+ hours of continuous use (surface scan), the unit became warmer but not hot - a credit to sound engineering design. If you like freebies, there's a trial version of backup software, an offer to store your data via internet, and some other utilities -- personally, I just wipe them out.
The one hitch (not Seagate's problem) is the external eSATA controller; I purchased a Highpoint RR1522A which has 2 external ports and allows for RAID control of two drives. The controller works fine when the machine is awake, but seems to have problems reinitializing after a wakeup call, causing endless pulsating access to the HDD (??boot attempt) and sufficiently heavy power drain to activate the UPS alarm. Maybe have to return to the (slower) USB data link.

Seagate FreeAgent Pro 320 is a winner . I bought 2 Seagate FreeAgent Pro 320 hard drives for my 2 new MacBook Pro laptops so that I could backup my data on Leopards TimeMachine. They both work great and are completely automatic on the new Macs.

Review from Mac user . I've used this HD for over a month now. I'm a Mac user running OS 10.4.10 and connecting using firewire 400. I left the drive in the original format so I could copy data from PC's. The reason for 4 stars is because I had difficulty copying data from a friend's PC running Chinese Win XP. This could be caused by the language format, I'm not sure. The drive is fast enough and communicates well with my iMac. Sometimes I have to re plug in the power for the iMac to see it, but that is a minor problem. I would buy another one. The independent power is nice. The way it sits horizontally on the power strip isn't.

So far flawless . Easy to install as 123 and had it for over 3 months no problems seems fast via firewire no complaints runs quite looks cool would by again.
It Rocks... . This thing is great... Not only does it look elegant setting next to my laptop, it has a small foot-print, making it welcome. Coupled with Mac's "Time Machine," you couldn't ask for more... A silent partner doing its job and looking good at the same time.

Great for Macs Good customer support . I'm using this hard drive with Mac OS X Tiger and it works great, even without the fancy backup software included with OS X Leopard. The drive looks really neat when it is on and glowing, but it can get kind of annoying in the dark, when I am trying to sleep. But other than that this drive is great, I like the simple nature of the software intended for use with it however I had some trouble getting started because the software always crashed when I tried to open it. But after an email to Seagate's tech support I got a fresh download that worked perfectly.
Seagate as Time Machine . Very easy to install, you just plug it in. My Mac recognized it and Time Machine (the new automatic backup) was up and running.
Works great! . Great product to back up specified folders of your PC. Don't throw away the manuals cause it contains the key code to extend the software trial period to 100 years.

Piece of Junk . The concept of this drive was good and early production may have been decent.
Newer versions are a disaster because Seagate quality control has plummeted. I've bought several of these drives in various sizes. The immediate weak spot is the modules that allow the switch from Firewire to USB and SATA.
In earlier production, the module quality was better managed. In the current production, manufacturing quality is dismal and there is no after production quality control. As a result, it is not unusual for a drive to go out with both modules NFG, i.e. DOA.
I made the mistake of buying several of these drives in larger size for backup drives. Each of them had at one module bad and some were both bad. Without them the drive is dead. If it's not dead, there's no assurance that quality control is any better on the drive. Seagate customer service is atrocious and resists replacing bad modules. If the drive is alive with one module or a borrowed module, you're forced to rob the drive of what's stored on it ... and return the whole mess. There's a an equal prospect that the drive is itself bad in which case you'll lose everything not backed up on a working drive.
Competition among drive makers is diminishing and the result is that Seagate, which once did a decent of quality control,no longer has any.

Dead Seagate FreeAgent Pro After 7 Months . Seagate ST307504FPA1E3-RK FreeAgent Pro 750 GB USB/eSATA/FireWire400 External Hard Drive
I bought a new Seagate FreeAgent Pro after reading reviews and comparing several other external drives and their manufacturers. I decided on Seagate because I remember the name from many years before when Seagate was thought to fabricate a good product. My Seagate drive sat approximately 2 feet from my computer. My drive was never moved, knocked over or tampered with in such a way that would cause the drive to malfunction. I performed the necessary maintenance as recommended. One day in the 7th month, I turned my computer on and realized that my Seagate drive was not backing up my files. There was no light or sound to cause me to believe that my Seagate drive was operational. I no longer have access to the backed up information on my Seagate hard drive for its use or erasure. My drive is dead.
On contacting Seagate, I learned that they would accept the inspection of my drive but would not return it should Seagate decide that the drive is faulty or not. They would not replace the drive with a new drive but they may or may not send me a refurbished drive that may or may not operate past 90 days. The information on my Seagate drive, should Seagate accept my drive based upon their findings or standards, would be lost and/or may be exposed to unknown individuals in or outside the United States.
Sometime in the near future, I will figure out a good course for the destruction of the hard drive so that my personal information is no longer available on the drive.
