Great product . I find this product great. It works perfect as described. Some could not find initial password (it is on the second page of manual. Password is "password" !!! :-))
Iomega eGo Encrypt Plus 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive 34514 (Silver) Reviews
Thanks for the Portable Hard Drive 34514! . It does not need an external power supply. So all I have to do is to pull out the USB cable from my laptop to put it to sleep.

Becoz this is NIST and CSE certified, AES CBC 256-bit hardware-encrypted, it means more than ever security & access anywhere.

I am also told that it is a hardware-based encryption, while most of the other brands offer software encryption. I really appreciate the full-disc hardware encryption because it keeps my files safe. The protection suite software, however, needs to be downloaded from the Iomega web site. This could have been included in the package to save the trouble of downloading. It does have an authentication software which is pre-loaded.

The power band grip is a must for all portable drives and thanks to Iomega for including it!
Iomega eGo Encrypt Plus 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive 34514 (Silver) Opinions
Nice sturdy HD with HW encryption! . Sturdy (due to its silicon protective cover) and fast encrypting HD! Perfect for people like me who's company force them to have encrypted backup due to data privacy rules. No more hours on end waiting for the HD's software to encrypt the data... Just copy the files across and voilá, all done! Having said that the drive could be more portable, when compared to a Seagate Freeagent Go drive (or WD Passport), it's a bit chunkier.
Good Drive but one and done . Overall the drive is nice. You just have to download some additional sofware for the device from the IoMega site. But, I like to have redundency in Backup drives. But the way the encryption sofware works, Only one Iomega encrypted hard drive will work at a time. So, it is a manual switch at least once a week to change over to second drive.
Really don't like that. So, your purchase will be One and you are done.
Good product poor documentation . Sturdy compact drive ideal for backing up a laptop or desktop. Have to go online to get any info on how it works or install it. Also had to ferret out the password to initially get into the thing (it's "password", BTW). Then you need to immediately click on the Administrator button to get to setup and the other tab. Also, on my HP Elite running Windows 7, I couldn't boot up if the unit was attached. Within the past few days, though, it started to boot while the drive was attached.

For the money, can't really complain. Some explicit intructions wuld be nice. Product arrived quickly and in good shape.
Nice Hard Drive . I find this product great. It works perfectly as described. It does not need an external power supply which makes it easier to carry during travel. The protection cover makes it sturdy and the hardware-encryption keeps data from un-authorized access. Faced problem with the password, but later could find it in the manual. It is very easy to use as the authentication software has been pre-loaded and the management utility is also included.

Cons Review
Easy to set up; has issues . I can vouch for one of the previous reviewers. Setup was easy once you figured out the 'password'. A couple weeks into ownership and the drive contents became corrupted while I was using the drive. Upon rebooting the computer, the encrypted partition was completely lost. Seems like this is a software issue (because the hard drive still works...), and it looks like Iomega uses some third-party software to run the encryption. If that's the case, then this drive really can't be recommended, as this sort of problem could happen at any time for anyone.
i wouldn't buy this if i were you . main points:
~3 failed hard drives
~No refunds
~limited support, chat sessions online only during work week
~$25 per phone support call
~Just plain not worth your time or money, seriously don't do it
~I did really like the look of it and it the rubber case around it

my story...
I bought this external hard drive September 2010. I spent $120 on it and that was about $30 more than i wanted to spend on a hard drive, but this this one was encrypted and had extra protection. That was well worth it. The issue i have had was just getting the thing to work. It did not come with directions, I was told by there chat support that i needed to partition it myself.. so eventually it worked but then less than a month later lost the data on it because something was wrong with the cord. not knowing what was wrong i had spend $30 more dollars getting the thing fixed at a computer store only to have the problem occur again because of the cord. after many many more chat sessions and a replacement cord they decided that the hard drive was too messed up and sent me a new one. this hard drive would not be detected by my computer. After a few more chat sessions they decided, again, to replace it. i just received my third hard drive everything seemed to go fine until i tried to unlock the software. the online manual told me to log in, but it wouldn't let me in with their generic password, or my old password. the hard drive finally locked me out permanently. and since iomega co. chat sessions are closed on weekends and their phone support costs $25 per call, i won't get any help until I'm busy next week. over all I'm very annoyed, although i have been very very polite and patient with them, I'm reaching my wits end. also they do not give refunds, seriously... I would not buy from this company again and i do not suggest anyone else buy from them either. I hope other people have had better luck than me. :(
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! . I got this encrypted HD to back up some important business data on my laptop.

The set-up was easy, but the documentation did not give the default password on the unit - I had to call support for it.

Next, I copied my data on it, and tested that it worked. However, on reboot the new encrypted partition disappeared along with my data.

I used the chat support because Iomega charges for telephone support, the person on the other end obviously was working off a script and had very rudimentary knowledge about IT. He was unsuccessful in helping me retrieve the lost data.

The technician did give me an event number and moved me up to the next level of tech support by telephone. After about forty-five minutes of verbal calisthenics, nothing had changed; bottom line, I have lost the data - they informed me that I could contact Iomega's data retrieval vendor and pay $1000 or more to have them try to recover the lost data.

A word to the wise, do not buy this faulty product, unless you want to loose your data, time, money, and your patience.
eGoiomega . Sturdy hard drive case and good encryption software, but comes with 2 USB attached together due to the necessary power needed to run the unit. I have to reboot my laptop every time I want to use to the Iomega or my laptop won't see it.
