LaCie offers this spare drive and drawer for use with our 2big Quadra. The spare drive and drawer increases security in the unlikely event of a drive failure. You can immediately and easily hot-swap a failed drive. The capacity of your spare drive must be equal to or higher than the capacity of the drive being replaced. 1TB for back up of the 2TB 2big Quadra (301352U).

Easy to replace worked out of the box but no instructions . I bought this drive because I was getting a mysterious combination of flashing blue lights on the back of my 2big Quadra - a single blinking blue light with others on continuously and this combination was not linked anywhere on the LaCie site or other places on the web to a specific error message. To be safe I decided to replace the drive.
I was using my 2big Quadra in the RAID mode where the data's written to one drive and an identical copy to the other drive.
I removed the potentially-failing drive (very simple - just turn the locking screw and pull it out) and put in the new drive - push it in and lock it in place. When I turned the unit on it started to rebuild the RAID on the new drive (I could tell this from the flashing red and blue LEDs on the back - according to the LaCie error message cheat sheet) and after about two hours it was finished and eveything has worked fine for the last few weeks.
Minor complaints about this include:
1: No instructions about how to physically remove the old drive and put in the new one. The process is really very simple, but as I'd not done it before, and I working on a drive that had about 600 gB of video on it, and I didn't want to break anything, it was a bit scary to have to do this replacement without any instructions. In retrospect it was a slam-dunk but until it had finished rebuilding the RAID I didn't really know that all my data was safe. (OK - I did have it backed up on a different drive (I have two of these units) just in case, but a single sheet of paper with a few bullet points and a diagram would have been reassuring.)
2: I don't really know if the single flashing blue LED meant that my drive was going to fail in the first place, as this pattern of LEDs flashing is not listed with an error code, but it's also not normal. Again, the LaCie documentation (this time with the 2big itself, not the replacement drive) is very skimpy. When everything's working this is not a problem, but when something goes wrong it would nice to have a little more info in the pamphlet that comes with the 2big would be useful.

LaCie 2big Quadra 1 TB Spare Drive 301475 Reviews
No work just rebuilds. . This is exactly why I buy the quadra 2bigs.
When my 2big got jostled recently, one of the 2 drives was damaged. I use it in "safe mode", which means that it mirrors one drive with the other. You get half the space, but the data security is worth it, because with external drives, it's not *if* it fails, but *when* it fails.
I got the spare drive in, turned the lock on the old one with a dime, swapped the spare in, turned the locking mechanism, and turned the drive back on. The system immediately wrote the entire contents of my good drive to my new drive, and 4-6 hours later, it finished backing up 600GB worth of mission critical data, while I went out and played with my kids. Didn't have to babysit the system, didn't have to type in a single command.
