The LaCie FastKey isn't just another USB key-it's a real mobile SSD. It's one of the speediest, most robust choices on the market for portable data storage. Featuring a solid-state drive and DRAM cache, it also offers up to 120GB of capacity. With the FastKey's USB 3.0 interface, you can store and transfer your files faster than ever before, no matter how large they are. USB 3.0 represents an enormous speed increase from USB 2.0, and best of all, since it's backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1, there's never any worry about connectivity. AES 256-bit encryption is included in the FastKey, along with LaCie's Private-Public software, which allows you to create a private partition on your key. This way, it's simple to keep private data and public data separate-letting you use your FastKey any time, anywhere. System Requirements : Computer with a USB port, high-speed Internet for online storage, latest version of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 / Mac OS X 10.5, 10.6 compatible with Mac and LaCie USB 3.0 cards only (Mac Intel only for LaCie Private-Public software), minimum free disk space of 600MB recommended. Box Contents: LaCie FastKey and string for keyring.

Awesome Drive . This is by far the best USB Drive I own. The drive will function fairly fast with USB 2.0. To get the fastest speed possible from the drive you'll need USB 3.0. The drive is an actual SSD drive in a thumb drive format. Be aware that he case is significantly larger than any other USB 2.0 drive on the market. Even though the drive is significantly larger than any other USB 2.0 drive it still fits in your pocket nicely.

LaCie FastKey 120 GB USB 3.0 Solid State Drive 130980 Reviews
MUST DO BETTER . The LaCie FastKey USB 3.0 30 gigabyte SSD looks like an oversize, high quality flashdrive, but is actually a Solid State Drive, which is what the SSD stands for. It always mounts as a drive in the `Hard disk drives' section of the `Computer' view, not in `Removable storage' section. This means it should be possible to install a bootable operating system on it (this facility not tested). As a physical item in the pocket it sits snugly with a large bunch of keys and has a small, good quality lanyard which is good for use with a keyring, but I find I have to attach it to a small quick-release carabiner-type climber's clip to enable easy removal for use with a variety of USB drive ports in all the situations I need to work in. The plastic insert in the lid was loose out of the packet, and thus the lid falls into two parts which I will be forced to glue together. This is a design fault. I will get to this minor task ASAP, it is vital to the cap function as the plastic part retains the USB male connector, and USB3 connectors are more complex and delicate than USB2, so they need the protection of a cap more.
HARDWARE COMPATIBILITY
The SSD works well on a variety of PCs and laptops with USB2 ports, so backward compatibility is good with PCs. It is not compatible with an office fax/scanner/printer I use with a USB2 port which scans direct to normal USB2 flashdrives, so other non-PC devices may not be compatible with it either. It does work with a Buffalo USB3 ExpressCard34 (which incorporates an NEC USB 3.0 Host Controller), it should be noted that it is essential in use with the SSD to boost power to this ExpressCard with the supplied extra USB2 line, so the powerdraw of this SSD is near the maximum available from a USB2 port (as the total power supplied by the ExpressCard is 500 milliamp). I may therefore not work in certain laptops with poor quality USB2 ports. In a three-year old Dell Inspiron1720 laptop running Vista Home Premium, it works well, which allows speed test comparisons to quantify the USB2 v USB3 advantage.
PC PERFORMANCE
USB2 PORT, COPYING A 1 GIGABYTE FOLDER
Writing from laptop HD to SSD, average = 62sec (ie, it backs up mixed files at about 1gig a minute)
Writing from SSD to HD, average = 38sec
USB3 PORT, COPYING A 1 GIGABYTE FOLDER
Read laptop HD, write to SSD, average = 39sec (ie, it backs up mixed files at about 1.6gig a minute)
Read SSD, write to HD, average = 22sec (nb, very variable result, range 19-27sec)
CONCLUSION
The SSD will push a USB2 port to its maximum, reading or writing. The USB3 performance is not even twice as fast, and certainly not as fast as is claimed by the manufacturers for their devices. This perhaps explains the slow take-up of USB3 in the marketplace. I can only hope that USB3.1 will deliver performance increases.

LaCie FastKey 120 GB USB 3.0 Solid State Drive 130980 Opinions
FAST . The write rate of the LaCie FastKey is 10 times faster a 2.0 usb!
I purchased this after buying the ADATA 3.0 usb flash drive (16 GB - AS102-16G-RGY and the 32 GB - AS102-32G-CGY) because the write speed on the ADATA did not perform up to my expectations.
Test results: transfer 1,016 *.jpg picture files - 3.67 GB
LaCie FastKey 3.0 usb PN: 130978 - 1 minute, 35 seconds
ADATA 3.0 usb 32 GB, PN: AS102-32G - 7 minutes, 17 seconds
LaCie MosKeyto 2.0 usb 16 gb PN: 130983 - 15 minutes, 28 seconds
More expensive, but worth it if you want or need the speed.
(Note: you need a something to plug this into to get this performance - will not work well if you just use a usb 2.0 port. I have a Western Digital PCIe 3.0 card - Model: WDBFNJ0000NNC-WASN; PN: WDBFNJ0000NNC-00 which was easy to install and highly recommended.)
