Good so far . Just got my Valkyrie up and running. The unit is pretty well built. Door in the front folds down and you can access the two removable drive bays. Make sure you read the PDF manaual on the included disk before installing. It will save you a lot of hassle as the quickstart quide is near worthless. Not mentioned in either guide or manaual is the removable drive bracket has a spacer you need to remove in order to install your drives. This took me a minute to figure out. The PDF on the disk is also the only place where it lists your username, password, and default IP which you need.

Took a while to figure out how to configure windows 7 to see the valkyrie. Follow the instructions as per the pdf manaual and then in Win 7 under advanced sharing settings make sure to turn off public folder sharing, turn off password protect sharing, turn off use user account and passwords to connect to other computers. The way win 7 is set up by default does not work.

Make sure the valkyrie is using the same workgroup name as the rest of your network (done through valkyrie net tool - access via web). I had some trouble getting raid 1 configured, I finally formatted both drives at the same time through the web utility and it all of a sudden worked, where as formatting them one at a time and it did not seem to work. Not sure if this was the fix but formatting both drives at the same time certainly is faster. Just start one drive formattting and then imediately start the 2nd drive formatting. All of a sudden my raid 1 valkrie was up and running properly. I didn't try every combination but these setting worked for me.
Patriot Valkyrie 2 Bay Network Attached Storage (PCNASVK35S2) Reviews
Good hardware but somewhat limited support . I bought this NAS a few weeks ago. The hardware is fine so far. But I am really disappointed by the level of support Patriot has put behind it -- practically none. The Patriot tech forum for this product is pretty much deserted by Patriot (Google and you will find it). There are only users asking questions and complaining, trying to bring attention to someone from Patriot, but nobody answers the call. Before I bought it, I thought a new firmware release was due end of March. But it didn't happen and there is no information on when it will finally arrive. I wished I had waitedand observed the zero activity level from Patriot before I ordered the product. I thought this is a new product and Patriot will be actively supporting it like other notable NAS vendors. But it looks like Patriot might be planning to take the cash and let the product die off. [See update below]

Update: July 2010

1. Thanks to some expert user(s)on the support forum. The device was hacked and a workaround was provide for telnet with root access. That opened the door for customization (tweaking).

2. It was reported at the forum that there was a new firmware release available as of 7/2/2010. I didn't test it -- will wait for more user feedback before upgrading. But this does show that Partiot is continuing the support of this product so far.

Patriot Valkyrie 2 Bay Network Attached Storage (PCNASVK35S2) Opinions
Best NAS in the low cost category . I was looking for a NAS for almost 6 months. Read about many including Linksys, DLink 323 etc. I was looking for one which is less that $200, which can hold upto 4TB, 2 Bay, with Raid 1. Finally I came to know about Patriot Valkrye. Here is my first review

Advantages
1. Solid build
2. Hard drive installation is easy
3. Setup is very easy
4. Speed and performance is same as any other in that category
5. ITunes server, FTP etc.

Disadvantages
1. Never follow quick installation guide, use the full installation guide come in the CD or website. Follow line by line.
2. Slow performance (this is same as any other NAS in the category)
3. To add the hard drive, no instruction available. You need to remove the black spacer and use that 4 screws to connect.
4. No Raid 5.

I read cnet reviews talking about performance, but I understand $150 cannot fetch that, they really are driving a porche and comparing that with Honda Civic. I also read about web interface crashes etc, but I am not seeing any of those. I have Windows 7 32 bit with IE8.

I sure think Patriot will release an updated version with more Raid options etc. I am waiting for that. This NAS will become a baseline in the low cost category.

Update after using this for a while
* Web interface never crashed
* H/W is solid and running cool if you place it in open place.
* Media server is slow (again what you expect from $150 NAS)
* When you boot your computer up, you may need to map the drive again. But you can keep the mapping persistent.
* No new update from Patriot yet.

I will recommend this product you any one who is low budget and looking for NAS.
Nice unit for our basic purposes . I bought this to use as a simple, inexpensive NAS for some data at work, as RAID 1. First use will be to store rarely accessed picture files. It will not be doing iTunes, torrent, web access or anything even slightly fancy. Certainly will not be feeding video or audio files, at least not streamed live for viewing/listening. Nor will we likely be using the USB for backup or to connect a printer. Nor will we set up any automatic backup via this software; I have other software set up for backups. I did not check for new firmware.

First, as posted before, it is rather slow (we're on a 100 speed network, not gigabit). But fast enough for my purposes.

Second, as posted before, the quick install guide is useless. Actually, worse than useless, as if you follow those instructions you won't get it set up.

Third, the manual on CD is not so hot, either. For example, in the box with the instructions "Select 'Access via web' " it clearly shows pressing "Setup Wizard" and not the adjoining button, "Access via web."

What I actually did to get it working:
-Installed two 1.5TB drives. Yes, the manual says 1TB max, but it sees my 1.5TB units just fine. Removed spacers and reused screws, carefully saving spacers that I'll never use again. ;)
-Plugged in RJ-45 port to LAN; power cord to wall; held power on switch 2 or 3 seconds.
-Ran software (on my W7 32 bit PC) to find Disk Management to format. Set the time first. Remember user ID is admin, PW is root.
-Despite what the manual implies, you have to select both HDDs from "attached device" to RAID devices and both are formatted at the same time. Fairly quickly, actually. Selected RAID 1 button, of course. Also selected FAT32. It defaults to EXT2. ONLY in JBOD would you format one at a time.
-I did NOT set up users, groups, guest accounts, permissions or PWs. I just want a simple system. For now.
-I found it easy to change the name of the drive and file folders, and add new folders. All in the standard way.

Simple. Meets my needs.
Decent for the money . Overall a decent product. Setup was easy and he item is running very cool granted I'm using WD green HDDs. The transfer speed maxes out at 10MB/s with a 1Gbps connection which is a little disappointing but is pretty close to the max that you'll get for the money. Install the latest firmware before you do anything.
Valkyrie NAS . I mistakenly ordered two of these, which turned out to be a good thing since the first one I received was D.O.A. The second worked just fine. I like everything about it except the data transfer speed. On my gigabyte network I can only get about 11.5mb per second. What happened to the gigabyte speed? If you understand this limitation I would definately recommend this product.
Excellent . I was more then impressed with this device. The Valkyrie is very fast and with it's 500Mhz onboard processor, it alows this device to do many functions that most standard NAS devices can not. The setup was very painless and my network automaticaly detected this device. I was able to IP in and configure the Valkyrie to my preferances. This device supports security on each account created within the Valkrie. Overall I can't find a better deal on the market for the price.

Cons Review
Not Recommended. Broken Firmware No Customer Support. . I should have reviewed the company's support web site first. The company appears to have no customer support and most people on the support site are wishing for a firmware upgrade. I bought this with high hopes. It freezes or crashes when uploading files over windows file sharing (A.K.A SMB). It may also do the same thing when uploading files over FTP and will certainly crash if uploading via SMB and FTP at the same time. I read the CNET review and they found it to be one of the slowest NAS enclosures they reviewed. This didn't bother me as long as it worked; however the fact that it is unable to even back up a computer due to long hangs and crashes during simple file transfer this product is not worth the money. I tried their customer support and after extremely long waits they had no solution other than waiting on a much anticipated firmware upgrade that has already been months in the waiting. They do not respond on their support forums. I returned this product and used a different enclosure.
Disappointed! . I know, I know. Most people only write reviews on items that have disapointed them. This is not the case with me. I write reviews on all the items I purchase online. This one is a disapointment. The firmware needs to be completely revamped and to make matters worse, support seems to be nonexistent. And slow? Can somebody say slow? It takes forever for a simple backup of my hard drive. Much longer than it would take to do with an onboard drive. I am always having to reset the machine and it seems that when I log in some application and try to log in with another, I get errors and messages that I can only log in with one instance of that user, but it won't let me correct it by logging out the first instance of the user. Anyway, to make a long story short, it is at a great price (for an entry level NAS), but not worth the price. I spent the difference between this NAS and a better one on asprin and still only have a lemon and a headache. Fair warning!
