A good all-around GPS + Data Logger . I own a standalone Globalsat BT-338 receiver, have a built-in GPS receiver in my HTC Touch 3G mobile, and have a GPS enabled Garmin Forerunner 405 watch/running computer as well. I needed one receiver with long battery life and data logging capability on an affordable price, so I went for the Holux M-1000C. Comparing the reception and the stability of the receivers the built-in Sirf III receiver of HTC has mediocre, the Forerunner has good and the standalone Globalsat and Holux both have excellent sensibility.
The Holux gets fix quite quickly, usually in 30 seconds. It always helps if you don't move while it searches for the satellites, and once it gets fix it never loses again. In urban canyons, such as among the downtown high-rises the signal tends to bounce a bit in every direction, thus later I always modify the tracks with the so called 'clamp to the ground' function. It modifies the height vector based on Google Earth data and eliminates the vertical bouncing and produce a much more realistic elevation diagram - very similar to the barometric altitude meter results. Unfortunately the bound ezTour software doesn't offer this function, but for example the (ex-Motionbased) Garmin Connect web service or the free TCX Converter utility do it for you.
The logger function of the M-1000C is excellent. There are 4 preset modes for logging: car, bike, running, hiking. In hiking mode for example records a waypoint in every 3 seconds and in every 10 metres, while these values in bike mode are 5 seconds and 5 meters. But it is possible to set these values manually according your preferences as well. The memory is huge, 4 hours of running log (recording in every 5 seconds) occupies 1% of the memory only.
Handling is easy: you turn it on, wait for the GPS led blinking (meaning fix) and there you go. When you finished just switch it off. Later in ezTour you can see you track in Google Maps and it is possible to modify your tracklog, like delete unnecessary waypoints, moving waypoints etc too. Unfortunately you cannot see the map under your track while you in Track Editor mode, though editing your track is reasonable manageable. While ezTour will not be your primary GPS track managing utility it does the basic stuff.
The Holux M-1000C delivers why I bought it: it can record the track of a week long hiking (with some external charging solution or spare battery as the battery last 'only' 28 hrs in logger mode), and I can use it as a bluetooth GPS with my navigation software on my HTC mobile if the built in GPS receiver gives up and/or I want to record my track.
Oh, did I mention that you can geotag your pictures with it?

Great for photo geotagging . I bought the Holux M-1000c with the purpose of geotagging my photos. The software was really easy to use, and the time synchronization worked great. The instruction manual says that you need a special mini-USB cable in order to communicate via USB, but a standard mini-USB cable worked fine for me to download the data and configure the device.
I've also used the device in my car, and the it works great there as well.

good peformance from compact device . I bought this for use with a bluetooth adpater for my camera to log GPS data on my camera files as I took pictures. For this purpose it has been excellent. Fast to charge, long battery life for GPS, Lithium battery that holds a charge for weeks when not in use, and bluetooth works with no problems.
Best adapter for Nikon cameras at a very good price is the Aoka one.

I ignore the waypoints part as I am either using a bluetooth GPS with a netbook or a camera and with neither does this matter. A GPS that calculates the location quickly and has a quick startup and does not need to be constantly reawakened is all I care about and the Holux does this very well.
I have used it walking around and taking pictures and in a car where I was navigating using a netbook and checking for points of interest. This last part is better with a Garmin as I have not been able to find a Google maps or other application that ties in my GPS location with a nearby restaurant or the closest gas station. The Holux is smaller and more convenient to carry around in a shirt pocket while taking pictures which is what I use it for the most. There are other ways to do this but if you have a camera that is GPS compatible the Holux with a Aoka adapter is a very efficient solution with all the information added to your camera's image file as the picture is being recorded to your CF card.

Perfect Bluetooth GPS for use with cameras & computers . I have had multiple GPS devices over the years and each generation is faster (tracks more satellites and has more processing channels) but usually that is all that is added. With the Holux I have a GPS device that is about the size and weight of a box of matches and easily slips into a pant pocket or into my camera bag. I turn it on at the begging of the day and forget about it.
I use a Aokatec Bluetooth receiver attached to my Nikon cameras' 10-pin port and automatically get the GPS coordinates sent to the camera and recorded on every picture I take. The free Nikon ViewNX software automatically links to Google Maps to show every picture on both a viewer window and on the locations on a map. Nothing could be easier. Amazing in its simplicity of use.
The Holux battery life is exceptional. I can go days without recharging it which is great for traveling. It charges using a USB port so I connect the cable to the netbook and charge it while I am also checking email or uploading pictures from the CF cards with my pictures.
I was impressed that Holux also continues to provide firmware updates for its devices which can be downloaded, and then using their supplied software used to update the firmware on the device you own. Very few manufacturers provide this capability. Usually one has to buy a newer model just to get fixes to bugs in the old one. With Holux your investment is protected at no extra cost.
I also use the Holux for GPS navigation linked to Google Maps. In theory I could do this with my smartphone but the GPS in the phone is much slower and when left on it seems to shorten the battery life of the phone. I prefer using the Holux with my netbook when traveling outside the USA or Europe where my Garmin Nuvi 370 lacks base maps for navigation. I could use the Nuvi 370 with Bluetooth to supply GPS coordinates to the netbook but the Nuvi is 4 times the size and has 1/4 the battery life of the Holux GPS.

Excellent Product! . I purchased the Holux M-1000C for two reasons: (1) it's data logging capability, and (2) it's Bluetooth GPS capability. On both accounts this unit performs flawlessly. I paired the Bluetooth GPS with a AK4N Bluetooth adapter that I'm using on my Nikon D300 camera. The system works fantastic for geotagging my photos. I'm amazed at how long the battery life is on the Holux M-1000C. I kept the thing on all day and several hours into the evening, and it ran perfectly. I did run into a slight problem with the unit I originally received - there was an apparent manufacturing defect with the one I got where, after some use, I could no longer communicate with the device via the USB cable and my computer. I contacted the seller, and they gladly worked with me to replace the unit. I was VERY pleased with the seller. If you're looking for a data logger bundled with a Bluetooth, this is an excellent choice.
Good GPS receiver for geotagging . I have bought this to supply GPS coordinates to my camera adapter. I use a Foolography Unleashed for my Nikon and they work together flawlessly. GPS data gets recorded in the EXIF data straight away, there is no bulky box in the hot shoe and I can stuff the camera in the bag without worrying about attachments. I just turn on the Holux in the morning and then forget about it. It either stays in the camera bag or in my pocket; in both cases it supplies data faithfully.This combination works very well for me and I am glad to have bought this logger.I have no use for the logging function and have not tried it yet.
Small Accurate Excellent! . It is exactly what it says it is -- high accuracy, tracks multiple GPS satellites, logs data for later retreival, bluetooh or USB connectivity to a variety of devices (Android SmartPhone, Laptop, iPad). I bought it for use with Sygic and a Motorola Xoom, but quickly learned that the Xoom has its own TRUE GPS receiver built in (not Assisted GPS or AGPS) so I didn't need it for that. But I've taken it on many road trips and it accurately logs data. Battery truly lasts HOURS. The EzTour software downloadable from the Holux website allows you to map your trips, edit the route (if you took a wrong turn) and then upload and share them via social sites like Facebook. For $50 I am very pleased.
Cons Review
Highly Unreliable . I know I use to have a good review of this product, but that was until I used it for an extended period of time. (I apologize to all those that I convinced to buy this.)
The product is a good product for keeping gps logs, but that is only when it actually works. I have owned this product for almost a year and up until May (6 months of ownership), it was a great product. After that I went on alot of trip, so I never had a chance to clear the logs off the unit, but according to the software, the memory still had more than enough room after each leg when i could check it. I just recently figured out this is because it wasn't actually keeping logs of anything.
The GPS still had all the usual lights that it had prior to May, but after mid May, the logs fell empty. Upon checking the unit, it showed 1% full, but the last logs were May 5th.
If you are adamant about seeing where you have been, or geo-caching, I recommend that you NOT by this product; it will get you feeling confident about it's relibility, and once you feel confident, it will let you down. I have no logs of 2 months of traveling to China, Hong Kong, and Japan. It has ruined the memories of my trip. Great trip memories, first ride on a bullet train (talking with my mom about how the GPS logs probably look so cool with the speed we are going), runied by this GPS.

Learn Chinese to get support . Frustrated !
USB communication doesn't work. Maybe it is Windows 7 related. The support web site is full of Driver downloads. A driver download resulted in some success, when I turn the GPS off and on, it produces some sound by the PC. But the Holux ezTour SW still can't communicate with the device. I sent an e-mail to the support group. No reply. I called, and most of the times I get "Lines are busy". When I get though, I get a Chinese phone menu. There does not seem to be support from within the U.S. or North America.

Holux M1000 GPS logger stopped working . The Holux M-1000 logger and ezTour PC software worked fine for about 6 months. Then the operation became intermittent where sometimes the GPS log could not be uploaded to the PC by ezTour software. Finally, no data could be uploaded. It appears the GPS data no longer is being stored in the Holux memory correctly. When the PC tries to upload log data a "no data available" message is displayed. The Holux logger was being used to record mileage for business purposes where reliability was important. I recommend avoiding this product.
