OneTouch has it all . ~This is a wonderful external drive to fit all my needs. It is small and light (feels like a regular paperback book), almost takes no space on my clustered desk when it's in stand up position (you can also lay it down). It is huge - 160GB (about 152GB availabe out of box - I guess because of factory installed configuration). Perfect for backup and storage. It is fast - I feel no difference in performance and response time from my laptop's internal hard drive. In fact it is faster in~~ terms of RPM (7200), most laptop hard drive is 5400 or slower. It is versatile - I use it not only for backup and storage, I install and run softwares on it just like any internal drive and never encounter any problem or feel any different. It is easy - Installation is a cinch. In fact, I didn't install the backup software comes with the package (because of some bad reviews on that software). I only installed the OneTouch driver and utility through which I can easily reconfigure the~~ OneTouch button to launch MS Windows Backup. It works like a charm. (The user guide clearly tells you how to re-set the OneTouch button to launch any programs you like, a very cool feature I think). It is convenient - I can unplug it (it also has a power on/off switch at the back) from my laptop (running XP), carry it to my office (just like a book), plug it to my workstation (running Windows 2000), and use it like a mobile mass storage and file transfering tool. (Make sure first time you~~ use it between different OS you need the installation CD for driver install).I never tried the connection to Mac.It is beautiful - the OneTouch button lights up in blue and has different blinking pattern to indicate drive state. (The drive automatically spin down to save energy when idling for about one hour - you can easily configure that and other features via drive utility). It is cool - unlike what's been said by other reviewers, the drive runs pretty cool even in peak activities -~~ the metal cover feels warm but just warm enough for your hand to feel it, nothing will be burn (plus it has a pedal for standing position and rubber feet for laying position). I just lay it down on my desk without attaching the rubber feet and it is perfectly fine. When it spins down, you can't feel any temperature at all.It is quiet - I can't hear a thing with this drive sitting on my desk running, not even in late night. If you really want to make sure it is spinning, you have to~~ literally put your ear on its cover. The only sound I can hear coming out of this drive is at the moment when it starts up or spins down, a light gentle clicking sound. (My wife will attest that my hearing is normal)It is cheap - you can get it for like $189 from costco.I think all will hold true for models of other size - I'm rather suprised to see some negative reviews on OneTouch with bigger or smaller sizes. I think Maxtor overall did a great job on this OneTouch series and a lot~~ customers will benefit from it.~

Maxtor A01E160 OneTouch 160 GB External Personal Storage Drive (PC / Mac) Reviews
Perfect Secondary/Backup Hard Drive for Laptops . I have been using Maxtor external hard drives for just over a year now and have made recommendations to family and colleagues which have resulted in them buying many of them as well. So with experience with close to a dozen hard drives, we have not had any problems and have nothing but praise for the drives. First off, with internal hard drive prices for laptops so expensive and so difficult to install, external hard drives that use firewire (IEEE1394) are a great option. These hard drives use both firewire and USB, so you can take the information and hot swap it among multiple computer (like a thumb drive) or keep it plugged in to a single computer for use a secondary hard drive. I have found virtually no speed difference between accessing files on the external hard drive versus the internal. The automatic backup feature, makes the hard drive all that much more useful. It comes bundled with Dantz Retrospect Express program which is an easy-to-use option for automatically backing up just what you want with a touch of a button. I backup often, usually just punching the button as I go meet to clients. It usually finishes the automated process by the time I return. Because backing up is so easy to do, when I did lose the hard drive on one of my laptops, I barely missed a beat after I got it replaced, simply restoring the drive image to make my new laptop look just like my old one. I highly recommend Maxtor external hard drives.

Maxtor A01E160 OneTouch 160 GB External Personal Storage Drive (PC / Mac) Opinions
It's OK.... . The product description says it's firewire and USB compatable, however it only ships with a USB cable. Also it can't be daisy chained to other hard drives, which is something I've been able to do with all my other external hard drives.
Also it only has 150 GB out of the box, not 160 (which I know is the case with every hard drive out there - but why don't they just say that so you know exactly what you're getting).
That being said, the price is good, it's fairly small and can be positioned horizontally or vertically, and the one touch feature is neat.

Great backup system . I have been using Maxtor external HD for about 2 years. This is the second one which I bought recently because I loved the one I have been using at work. The setup was quick and easy. Once you setup Retrospect and schedule it to run, you can just forget about it. The first time it run it usually takes a long time depending on your HD space. After that, it will be quicker. I suggest you schedule it to run late at night or early morning when you are a sleep. That way you will never be interrupted.
External Drives and Maxtor . This drive has been running nearly non stop since the day I bought it fall 2004. Only once has it ever acted up because of heat failing to dissipate quickly enough. This is a big problem with many external drives, and is not really an issue particularly associated with Maxtor or Onetouch drives. In general, as I experienced PC builder I would highly recommended installing another internal drive and check to make sure you case is well ventilated. If this is not possible an external drive is best connected through either a firewire port or a USB2.0 slot. Anything else would be quite slow. As far as reliability statistics for various hard drives I would recommend also researching your product at http://www.storagereview.com/
Just what i needed . I bought this HD a while ago and haven't got the chance to try it out till now.
I have so many stuffs in my PC that everytime I reinstall it, I lose some documents, photos, videos even mp3s; now that I opened it I'm moving all my stuffs from one of my 80GB HD to it, now I can't erase them accidentally.
This is great, I recomend it to everyone who had trouble backing up or losing stuffs in their HD.
Stop buying tons of CD-Rs to back up and then just throw them away (I used to do that too), GO OUT THERE AND GET ONE NOW, ASAP!!!
Maxtor is one of my favorite brands in computer hardware so I recomend it eyes shut.

Maxtor one touch . Drive was very easy to install, no problem at all. I thought it was the 2Mb cache version but it was delivered as an 8 Mb.
I have not quite learned to use the Retrospect software, which was one of the reasons I bought the unit. The instructions for Retrospect are minimal, on line instructions are 200+ pages, probably won't print it. For now I will use Acronis which I have. Unfortunately, that software will not let me use the one touch feature, but with this software, backup can be scheduled.

Cons Review
A Flawed Product. . Things I liked:
Good size, appearance, documentation, runs quiet, cheap price.
Problems:
1. If you have more than one hard drive to back up and expect to back up everything with the One Touch button, think again. You can only designate one source drive in the One Touch setup window. You can back up multiple drives with a manual or scheduled backup but not with the One Touch Button.
2. I did a manual backup with verification. Performance was slower than I expected. (Dell Dimension 4100, P3 800, 512 RAM, 60 + 80 GB HDs.) [This is a USB drive, though the product description says USB + Fireware. There is no Firewire port on the drive.] After the backup completed I started getting Pagefile I/O erros during verification. I canceled the job but then could not access the drive until I rebooted. Tested several times with the same results. Backups were fine. I could open and read all tested files in the backup set.
3. Unsatisfactory Tech Support
Phones are only open 8 to 5 Mountain Time, M-F. Some people gotta work, so I emailed support. The answer came on the second morning- about 40 hours. Gave an inadequate answer to my first question and completely ignored my second problem.
Bottom Line: You buy cheap, you get cheap.

Danger NOT A FIREWIRE DRIVE . This product appears to be firewire and usb. I even went as far as looking up the model number on the Maxtor web site and speaking with an Amazon staffer over the phone before buying. Everything pointed to this being a Firewire drive but when it arrived THERE WAS NO FIREWIRE PORT ON THIS DRIVE!!!! Do not be fooled by the Technical info on this product like I was.
This drive will not last . I bought one of these and used it as extra storage for about 6 months before it died. Maxtor shipped me a replacement that has lasted about 3 months. Now it too has died. Don't trust your data to Maxtor. Their products are awful.
