Handy tool for upgrades and maintenance . This clever device is a universal hard disk drive adapter that essentially lets you run most any desktop or laptop drive as a caseless external drive. Much more useful for short-term projects like upgrades and reinstalls than a hard drive enclosure which must exactly match the drive form factor. Quality is good. For $39.98, I found this to be a great value.

Very Good Product! . This is one useful tool that is a must for file recovery or testing hardrives. I tried this on 4 different drives: a SATA drive that wouldn't boot...I was able to do file recovery on this one; an IDE drive with a Windows 95 system on it; and 2 IDE drives that were both defective...on one of them you could feel the motor spinning but wasn't being read, and the other was completely defective. Those drives had been removed from computers that were defective more than 15 years ago...this was just confirmation that they are ready for the recyclers. Someone else had commented that there isn't any support for this adapter once plugged into a drive. Because of the differences in heights of various drives, it would be impractical to add rubber feet or other permanant fix to adapt to the various heights. A person just has to use care when plugging the adapter into the drive and then find a suitable prop to support this adapter. I found that a partial pad of Post-It notes worked well or even a mouse pad was suitable.
This method is far easier to use than to open up your computer and attach to cables inside...didn't someone once say that opening a computer is like opening a box of chocolates...you never know what you're going to get!

Cons Review
Fantastic functionality! . This adapter works like a charm. I've tested it on SATA and IDE drives, and it just simply works. It does come with a USB3.0 cable, which I wasn't sure about when reading the item description. I haven't used it yet on a USB3.0 port, but it is very fast on a standard USB2.0 port.
I give it 4 stars because the physical design worries me just a bit. Since the hard drive connections are right on the unit (no cables), the unit and the hard drive become one entity when the drive is plugged in. The adapter is not designed in a way so that everything sits comfortably flat or flush on a surface. This appears to create slight strain on the hard drive's SATA or IDE ports. I'm always having to put a shim under either the adapter or the drive.
*EDIT* Changed review to 2-stars, because I really liked the product, but it died after 4 months. The ON/OFF switch would only work in the limbo point between on and off. After trying to run it in this limbo point, the unit seemed to die (and smelled like it too).
