supplier instructions are not for beginners - excellent product though . this product is very nice but a challenge. it is NOT plug and play. the box says "goliath aluminum cover" but it's heavier than just a cover - because what has happened here (obviously) is the company called HornetTek has purchased some overstock of Goliath covers, and overstock of Samsung INTERNAL hard drives, and put them together and is reselling them as an EXTERNAL hard drive.
this external HD is compatible with mac, windows, and linux - and the reason it can be that way is it is NOT formatted.
the instructions only "hint" toward formatting. they actually are very misleading because one side of the page tells you how to put a hard drive into this "case" (not applicable to this situation, and very confusing), the other side tells you how to plug in and "allocate" your new external hard drive. i have a windows o/s ... these instructions might work on mac or linux, but it sure was not applicable for me!
i had to do research and involve another co-worker to do a screenshare and figure out what needed to be done. bottom line was we had to format the external HD which took 6 hours. after that everything was fine.
the product is excellent - the only thing physically wrong with it is the case is very sharp and heavy and when i set it on my desk before i put the sticky "feet" on it to protect my desk, it already gouged the wood on my desk. and....there are only 3 sticky feet so you have to put one in the center on one end and two on the other side, so it's not truly well balanced on it's new protective feet.
so as for the product itself, once you set it up, it's GREAT....but hornettek sure did not do their "due diligence" for the end user here.
